Gridserve Gatwick Electric Forecourt: the future of EV charging?

- Gridserve are a young company but have done amazing things in the UK. This is the third of their "Electric Forecourts" - a more fancy, less smelly, version of a standard petrol station.
This one has 22x 350kW rapid chargers (6 of which will also do ChaDeMo at 100kW), 4x Tesla Superchargers, 4x 22kW AC chargers.
What to do while you're charging? Go into the lounge area, get a coffee at Costa, use their free wifi, talk to "gurus" about EVs (they also offer test drives and leasing), use the immaculately clean bathrooms, or shop in a weirdly high-tech store that has no checkouts. It's odd, but probably the future. (Run by Amazon, naturally.) - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Wish we had EV stations like this in Canada instead of the alley behind the Walmart.
It’s very nice. Impressive how they managed to squeeze so many chargers + the amazing amenities into such a small footprint. 👌
Braintree was the first one and it is great! I'm glad they are expanding! Seen them also in motorway services where they have taken over the chargers from others that used to not work or where faulty all the time,... this is the way forward for EVs... Just need one person with the right mentality and will to improve things
Yes, Toddington Harper, the CEO of Gridserve, has an Elon Musk quality to him. (The old Elon, not the new one so much!)
I was impressed with braintree
Great concept- thanks for highlighting
Drove all the way from Norway and charged at Gridserve Gatwick just before it opened. Wish we had those sort of locations! Charged at Pease Cottage Supercharger afterwards, what a let down compared to this!
Gridserve Braintree is always a pleasure to charge there and have a look around 👍
Look great
And new car day tomorrow picking up my Megan
Exciting! Enjoy it!
Need to go and take a look - this one is only about 20mins from me. My wife has used it to charge her EV work van a couple of times - she might have been there the same time as you actually as she said they were doing lots of press and filming etc. We do need more of these, it looks great!
Was she driving an Environment Agency van? If so, she was driving in just as I was leaving. (Great to see so many vans there actually. British Gas and Openreach were also there.)
Yes! She was indeed in the EA van. Lots of sites in London so makes sense with the ULEZ etc. We pick up the Enyaq on Sat so might need to give it a run on the M-Way and visit Gridserve so I can take a look.
I charge there once a month - its excellent!
Did you charge somewhere else before?
Roll on the EV2. Love the new filling station, hopefully another 100 coming soon
We should have had 100 by next year based on their original announcement! 😀
The Sussex EV group is meeting there Sunday 21/1; shame we didn’t arrange to meet up then!
I wish I could have made it but I'll be busy on Sunday unfortunately.
Just like the one in Norwich
It’s a similar layout but a bit more spacious upstairs I believe. A great layout for maximising space, although not as convenient as Braintree for towing vehicles.
Stevenage they building one too
We need places like that in the US very nice.
Yep the EV9 is monstrous. Have you stood next to an Eletre? That thing is gigantic too.
Yes. Crazy, really. It makes me miss my old Fiat 500e!
Went there last night when waiting for a flight arrival, a great facility. The cost of charging away from home still troubles me...
Yes, it's particularly expensive there. I hope they bring their prices down a bit as competition heats up.
That looks really cool. And now you can shop like you stole it? Even more cool. 😅
It looks great but I can’t get over the Gridserve chargers being 79p/kWh and the Tesla superchargers on the same site 39p most of the day and 43p 16:00-20:00
Superchargers are a great deal! I think Tesla are in a position to reduce prices as their car sales subsidise the charging to a degree. I’m sure prices will go down a bit across the whole industry at some point but for the moment Tesla are in the best position.
Sussex EV's should be there Sunday
So I heard! A shame I can't make it back there then to see you all.
Any chademo ?
Yes - not all, sadly, but a few of them do.
@@MrEV They do seem to still be installing chademo in my area too , I guess they need to service all the leafs in the UK as there must be many thousands on the road . I have one .
I’ve seen some adverts recently for CCS2 to Chademo adapters, they seem a little too much for average person (who’s chademo car probably isn’t going a lot of road trips) but they look like a great solution to have available at places like this
Nice .
Wonder what is used to generate the electricity?.Asking for a climate activist buddy😮😊
They say it's powered with renewables, in just the same way a lot of people have renewable tariffs at home.
As well as that, they have some solar panels on the roof and it's supported with batteries which charge up during the night when electricity is cheap (and generally cleaner).
But even if the grid was all powered purely from gas and coal (which it never is in the UK now), it's still cleaner than ICE cars due to EVs being far more efficient.
And @MrEv the power stations are far better at removing particulate matter than a car’s exhaust and the power stations are further from populated areas than car engines. The list goes on and on with the benefit of an EV over ICE cars
Sorry to say it but I don't think these places will last more than a few years. Motorway services, supermarkets and destinations such as pubs will be the main places for rapids. Hopefully more manufacturers will see sense and add 22kw or at least 11kw 3 phase and that'll be great for town centre and residential parking. The French seem to have the right idea regarding charging.
I feel the more the merrier at the moment. There will be enormous competition at supermarkets which will be great, but MFG EV Power has shown that having chargers at petrol stations can work really well. Canopies are a bonus - sadly lacking at most places (including pubs and supermarkets).
So I think, if positioned well like this is, places like this will do really well.
That said, I couldn't agree more that we need more destination chargers. I also think it a big shame 22kW onboard chargers aren't more common. It's one of the best things about the Megane (and Zoe of course).
@@MrEV I support the more the merrier at the present time as we do need them, I would also like to see a ZAP map et al have a filter and sort by price.
There’s a few spots I like to stop on long trips which sell good food rather than fast food rubbish, I’d like to see them have chargers so I can have a nice meal while it charges.
I hate the current glorified filling stations on motorways that I use with my ice car.
I don’t need to refuel the car at them, I refuel myself.
🙄😂
lets hope no EV blows up whilst charging...
Since they’re far less likely to blow up than ICE cars, I think we’re relatively safe there.
We’ll put a ban on any diesel Range Rovers. Last time one of them got near an airport……
What a silly EV nonsense... 🤦
You’ll be driving a silly EV one day, sorry!
