Opening riff is my ringtone. Has been for years. This is such a great song, and even greater if viewed in context of its time, when nuclear war was a likely event. Oh, and the lyrics at one point say "To the tune of (a) starving milliard, to make a better kind of gun". I always wondered if English speaking people knew what that word, "milliard" means. That word is not used in American English at all.
Spoiler alert - I'm going to provide an explanation as far as my memory goes:
There are two ways of counting high digit numbers. Americans use the "short scale", while Britains (and Norwegians like myself) use long scale. In short, the long scale definition of a billion is "a million squared", which is 1.000.000.000.000 whereas the definition of a trillion is "a million cubed", which is 1.000.000.000.000.000.000 - In America, million, billion, trillion just goes up by a factor of 1.000 so an American billion and trillion are, respectively 1.000.000.000 and 1.000.000.000.000, the last of which equals a long scale billion, but Americans see as a trillion. Now, in the long scale scenario, you change the ending "on" to "ard" to signify a factor of 1.000. So 1.000.000.000 is milliard, 1.000.000.000.000 is billion (million cubed), 1.000.000.000.000.000 is a billiard, 1.000.000.000.000.000.000 is a trillion, and 1.000.000.000.000.000.000.000 is a trilliard.
...and they told me everything is bigger in America. Now we know why. Yourr units system is off =)

It's an anti war song about the doomsday clock & threat of nuclear annihilation this song was written back in 1984 during the cold war , I think there's also some reference from biblical scripture in this song .... Iron Maiden are deep thinkers & their lyrics reflect this.
I can't wait to see your lyrical breakdown video for this song
Awesome lyrics yet again from Bruce Dickenson & co.

The look on their faces when they heard "that" lyric. I knew this was going to happen. It looks like they're reading the comments and have learned the purpose of the Doomsday Clock, and so forth. To repeat what's been said before, Iron Maiden, despite the visceral lyrics that can be confused for delight in death or war, are by far anti-war.

The song is about the doomsday clock, interesting topic if you don't know about. When they wrote this, it was 3 minutes to midnight, well now it's actually 2 minutes to midnight. :): Lyrics were mainly done by the singer Bruce Dickinson, while Adrian Smith has composed the music. And the opening riff is just super catchy and raw.

So glad more are discovering the musicianship of these masters of their craft. Up the irons!!
This song is actually against the horrors of war and death in the modern world by presenting them as horrific and evil. The point is it looks like two minutes to doomsday, so theyre criticising war and abortion.
Its just like Number of the Beast is about presenting the Devil as a "pretty bad guy" to use Bruce's own words. Theyre very intellectual in their writing.

The song was written during a spike in tensions between NATO and the Soviet Union-- a group called the Union Of Concerned Scientists developed criteria to describe how close human civilization is to an Apocalypse-level event (the Doomsday Clock).
Recently it was advanced to under two minutes due to climate change, economic instability, and escalations in several conflicts around the world.

All lyrics should be taken in context. Way back when during the cold war, there was a Dooms Day clock. The song is referencing that the world was coming to an end. As in 2 minutes to midnight. Build a bigger gun was reference to Iraq actually trying to build a cannon that could shoot to the moon while the people starved. So lots of war references. Including oiling the war machine and feeding it with our babies. Yes, the young are sent to war by old people. :)

The song title references the Doomsday Clock, the symbolic clock used by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, which represents a countdown to potential global catastrophe that would happen at midnight. . In September 1953 the clock reached two minutes to midnight, the closest it ever got to midnight in the 20th Century.

As you know already, song is Doomsday Clock. These guys of the band even I went thru the Cold War, tensions between USA and Russia when it was USSR. Both countries had and still have ICBMs aimed at each other plus other countries had Ballistic missiles. Concerned scientists created the Doomsday Clock to show how close that humanity is the end of life. Steve Harris written the song after hearing stories from his relatives and living with the dangers of Nuclear War. We are still at risk of Nuclear War or Terrorist because radicals are trying to get one of those weapons of destruction.

I haven’t read all the comments or watched your lyrical breakdown, but you listened to this song with a disadvantage, as did I when I originally heard it in the 80s.
As you mentioned, Maiden’s songs are a history lesson, and this is now, but when it came out it was talking about their present, which was at the height of the Cold War. The title of the song and chorus refers to the “Doomsday Clock”, a concept by scientists at the time about how close we were to Armageddon. And “Two Minutes to Midnight” says we we very close at the time-and we were.
It’s an anti-war song. Period. It doesn’t glorify violence. It’s quite the opposite. It describes violence, but from a critical point of view, especially when it comes to profiting from war (the golden goose referred to at the beginning of the song). And the difficult reference to killing the “unborn in the womb”, which I originally thought glorified abortion (but was wrong) is actually a reference about how war now kills indiscriminately, and with the push of a button bombs can kill the innocent.
The song is really a criticism of politicians and war profiteers who were pushing us towards doomsday, all for the sake of profit. Listening to the song again with that in mind, you have a much greater respect for the lyrics-and the band.

2 minutes to midnight is referring to the doomsday clock. It is basically the likelihood of the world ending in nuclear war. This song is about the evil of the corporate war machine

To understand this song fully, watch following movies: Testament (1983), The Day after (1983) or Threads (1984). Alternative music would be OMD's Enola Gay.

To Kill The Unborn in the womb is reference to stopping the war before it starts. Not actually killing babies
