    Southeast Asia’s longest waterway, the Mekong River, is under threat from development, according to a report by more than two dozen global conservation groups. The research published on March 4, 2024, said WWF and 25 other marine and wildlife conservation organisations found that 20 per cent of the fish species living in the Mekong are in danger of going extinct because of unsustainable development. The study said the biggest culprit was the construction of hydropower dams, which fragment the flow of the river and its tributaries.

      You need to find out where China built the dam before you made your ridiculous remarks. The real place where fish grow in the Mekong River is in the lower reaches, where the water flow is wide and smooth.

    • @rickoffee
      @rickoffee Před 2 měsíci

      Years ago I think I came across a bogus study report by some shady organization criticizing China for causing environmental damage to the Mekong by building too many dams.
      That organization was affiliated to a US university which got in trouble for selling diplomas to students of some middle eastern country I think.
      A critic of US foreign policy explained in a blog entry that it was part of a dark propaganda campaign to stop China from having too much influence on his neighbors.
      That was years ago when I started to realize the USA was not quite the white knight we thought it was. There are too many people in their power elite with a hegemonic mindset.
      That is why it is important to take everything bad said about some of the "adversaries" of the US with a big pinch of salt.

      Your logic makes no sense. Where does the water come from? Snows, rains, and runoffs. That means those belong to China. China is not required to give a drop to other countries. Those countries should be glad they get the water otherwise, they would have small rivers and fewer minerals. Maybe those countries should pay China to allow more waters to flow.

    This is really a strange fallacy. Building dams on rivers will destroy the ecosystem. So there are so many dams built in the world, which are destroying the ecosystem. Building a dam cannot cut off the water flow downstream, because the storage capacity of the dam is fixed. Once the dam is full of water, you must open the gate to release the water. These dams only store part of the water flowing into the Pacific Ocean in the reservoir. Dams are not only used to generate electricity, but also to prevent floods and droughts. When floods are large, dams can store water and reduce flooding downstream. When encountering drought downstream, the water in the reservoir can be evacuated to provide help for the drought downstream.

    • @rickoffee
      @rickoffee Před 2 měsíci +1

      it's often not the dams that are the main issue but how much water is diverted for agriculture and industry either from the reservoir dam itself or as it is released into the river.
      for example a lot of water from the Colorado river is used for industries, California agriculture, not to mention Las Vegas. that is why as the river enters Mexico, much of the water has gone leaving the Colorado River Delta dry. the dams like the famous Hoover Dam by themselves are not responsible.
      south east asian countries are also rich in rainfall which is not the case in some of the regions the Colorado River goes through.

It is located in a deep mountain with a large drop and rapid water flow. It is basically uninhabited land with neither large-scale industrial water use nor agricultural irrigation. Industrial and agricultural water use has virtually nothing to do with dams. The river water can also be used as an industrial waterway for agricultural purposes without building dams

    These logics make no sense. China water is not required to make it to other countries. If they want to block the water or be guided to somewhere else, that is their own choice. Countries that are saying the water level is decreasing or insufficient minerals need to put those in themselves. Is there an international law that says if it rains, a certain percentage has to go to other countries? I do not see the other countries contributing water or minerals upstream. Maybe if the other countries pay China to release certain millions of gallons of water, then the issues can be solved. Playing the blaming game is ridiculous.

      @@darkcloud5830 Have you ever even been on the Mekong? I've been kayaking the river for 20 years, in Thailand and Laos. China did not sign as it wanted to destroy the river with no constraints. A few years ago one of the dams in China released water at 3am without telling its neighbours. The wave rose 100m in Pak Beng and swept away houses in the middle of the night. All countries have to consult and live in harmony for the Mekong to survive. More recently it just started blowing up rapids in Laos so Chinese ships could pass, without seeking permission from either Laos or Thailand as the rapids were in their territory. After an international outcry they were finally stopped.
