- The classic Dickens tale of an orphan boy who escapes the horrors of the orphanage only to be taken in by a band of thieves and pickpockets.
Starring: George C. Scott, Tim Curry, Michael Hordern
Director: Clive Donner
I own absolutely nothing. This belongs to the CBS.
I wanted to see all of the Oliver Twist movies ever made. Unfortunately this one was not available for purchase or streaming anywhere online. I found it thanks to a single DVD copy which happened to be available on Amazon. I am posting this strictly for the purpose of preserving history.
It is my firm belief that when media is locked away in a vault where nobody can enjoy it, instead of being made available for sale or otherwise, everybody loses. If you are a representative of the CBS reading this, I plead with you to allow this video to remain online with advertising, or to make it available for purchase on international movie distribution platforms such as iTunes before taking it down. If this had been internationally available via official channels, I would never have posted it. Thank you in advance.

There is nothing like a good Dickens novel / movie.

Wonderful movie. I spent my first 5 years starving in a "workhouse" before I was adopted by a loving couple.

"Two dangerous men in the window sir!" "After we have our tea". The most English shit I have ever heard lol. None the less. I love this story. I have nearly lived the life of Oliver Twist. My mother was raped and murdered when I was a boy. I was stolen from my father and taken by the state. My foster parents abused me Gravely. I'm a broken man, but I'm a good man. And I continue to be so. Even in my waning years.
Live a good life and be happy my friends.
and I thought my own life was like Oliver's...If life were fair, you'd have been rewarded with a fortune.
Im english and I agree @Salazar Payne XD
Lol
I'm so sorry that happened to you
A pleasure to meet you, Salazar. Even if only on CZcams. You are indeed a good man.
The dark version of the splendid 1968 musical. Depressing.
Lol, I agree
It was in the year 1976,when I was in tenth standard in school, I read 'Oliver Twist' as non detailed text book. Then itself, the characters in this story lay deep in my mind. 45years later, I watched this tv film today and the frames took me back to the memories of reading the book. All the actors and actresses performed well especially I liked Nancy(Cherie Lunghi), and Oliver Twist(Richard Charles)My hearty congratulations... (from Kerala, India )
Richard Hill was the worst Oliver
@@AlexHill2605this young boy was a facken genius!
My son Nick played the small part of Dick in the orphanage. This brings back so many memories. One good one was having breakfast on location with Timothy West, such a lovely man. Nick did'nt carry on with his acting, but now takes part in Cosplay at every opportunity. (Still an actor at heart!) As you can see, I am still very proud of him.
A few of us have spoken to him, and a very pleasant guy he is. He said you did Richard Charles' makeup etc. This is one of my favourite adaptations.
Nick said that he and Richard had a long dialogue scene after they were thrown in the cellar. Since I have the screenplay now, I got to read the scene. Too bad it was cut.
@@phillise1 Ironically, I've put your book onto Watch list before you contacted. Hopefully I will buy it very soon.
Were they talking about what will happen to them?
@@foxteen8721 Oh, you mean Quigsnip? Be sure to give it a good review!
What will happen to who?
@@phillise1 What's Quigsnip? I mean your book on the deleted villain Dickens seemed to scrap while writing.
Oliver and Dick wondering what would happen. I actually found a blog and it describes Oliver saying that Mr. Bumble will be sorry one day.
finally after me spending ages searching i found a good quality upload of the 1982 oliver twist
How can people watch this ...SYSTEM ?...WTH...it is nasty way to treat the children ...is this how things were ?
@@jessnewday8298 yeah it is. This is what happened in the 1800's
Same bro
@@2ou1 the 1800s were a time of change though with more and more upper class people developing a 'social conciounse' and the introduction off the welfare system and soup kitchens/food banks. People were waking up to the fact the poor weren't poor because they were bad people, they just had bad luck
Big hugs
Who else is here just to see Tim Curry.🖤

yup xD
My heart breaks for Nancy! She was such pretty sweet little thing who loved her husband even when he did crap to her for years!
Bill Sikes was basically her boyfriend in the novel, they never married
Yeah she was suppose to when she decided to kill Oliver kill him or report him to cops
@@booklover023 Well, her pimp basically.
A novel that illustrates how poverty nurtures crime. Time hasn’t changed much.
mm, same as power and fortune. the same coin where either side can star either bad or good and still end badly.
What we learn in life is that good is hardly ever easy, and at the same time it kind of is because of how simple it is, a lot of effort is needed and that carries it's own kind of pain.
With fortune and power it leaves very little to be learned from hard work which is why wealthy parents often **or should often** keep it from corrupting their kids because a life of ease will leave a child defenseless against loss and even more so growing up, what a person gains in physical value they also lose physical value because the more time you spend pursuing something the less life you have to spend.
Spending your life wisely and learning from hard work will lead to appreciation for it, and even with hard work not everyone will win all the time or get exactly what they want.
In a few less words while I'm under some amount of influence... speaking of which **just one drink**
But you're right, nothing has really changed, the more things change the more they stay the same. And I'm sure even way back, way way back there were similar events that could be compared to today albeit all sides will always make a reason to believe that they are the right one, one way or another and at the expense of others.
As a 34 year old father of 3 who's wife has been in jail for over....6 months now, domesticv and she's since been deemed incompetent to stand trial.... having to care for our kids by myself, having been falsely accused and physically, emotionally and mentally injured in the process, working a full time job to pay mortgage, bills and other things....
Do I feel any sort of envy or jealousy for people who aren't going through these things?
No.
Because I made choices for my life for the right reasons, and I'll stand by that despite unfortunate events that happen, why I chose to include this?.... well, its kind of related I think.
I'm still working hard, some basic things being neglected like keeping things clean have suffered but I try, depression works like that I'm sure. but I'm still here and I'm glad for that.
They showed this in school in 5th or 6th grade in the 80's and the Nancy death scene scarred me for life.
Nency was very kind hearted and my heart was crying😢😢 when she had been attacked by that furious man otherwise oliver's performance was awesome. This movie depicted victorian era in candidly way.👍

I can't tell if I'm more scared of him as Bill Sikes or Frank N' Furter.

Even without a British accent, George C Scott was still believable and amazing . See him in A Christmas Carol. He is well missed.

Let’s not forget about Smoke in Cartoons All-Star to the Rescue and Percival C. McLeach in The Rescuers Down Under.
They were voiced by George C. Scott as well.
I was about 13 when I saw this on TV. I always remember the scene when Bill killed Nancy. That scene breaks me every time I think of it.
The way Nancy died 😢 and she still loved bill so much
Why did i look at the comments, I'm such an idiot.

Nancy was very idiot at report Monks at the police

That close up of his face after he murdered her was so scary!!!
I saw this on tv as a child and wanted to see it again ever since! This movie really shaped how i saw the world! And i loved Tim Curry... he was such a good villian!
I wish he had done more period dramas.
I love it who else???
Not the best version of Oliver Twist but a good one for sure. Charles Dickens -- England's second Shakespeare. The man told incredible stories. May even be the best author who ever lived. May also be the pre-Sherlock Holmes basis.
I watched a Netflix series -- the wonderful Ripper Street (which takes place during the Jack the Ripper era in England but is not necessarily about Jack). There are countless Dickens' type reminders throughout done cleverly & thoughtfully. Characters are equally shady.
The dialogue in every Dickens tale sparkles despite its dark atmosphere. I envy this man's vocabulary & talent with a pen. He wrote the way Eric Clapton plays the guitar. I'll bet Charles would have gotten along quite well with some cigars & brandy visiting Edgar Allan Poe & Arthur Conan Doyle. No doubt. Genius' all.
Dickens's message was that middle class people aren't as assured as they might think. Bad luck and string of bad circumstances can leads to such a plight. So be more affectionate to the unfortunate.
I like they show here bumble get fired and maybee arrested and his wife too 😊And at the end i like Edward gets arrested 😊
Nancy she is very kind hearted to Oliver😪🥰
George Scott's unmatched interpretation.

Charles Dickens was a genius
Way better than classic musical! I found myself just fast forwarding past the scores. It’s like, get on with the plot! This movie is amazing! Tim Curry! The scary clown!
Why bother watching the musical if you're not interested in the songs? Doesn't make sense! Oliver 1968 is brilliant.
I remember seeing this when I was just under ten. Our teacher encouraged us to watch it, but to take an afternoon nap so we could see the end. (I still fell asleep, though.)
A couple years later, director Clive Donner and lead actor George C. Scott would reunite for another Dickens project...what many people consider the definitive Christmas Carol.
I thought George C. was better at Scrooge than Fagin. What do you think?Did your teacher happen to have a copy of Goldman's screenplay produced by CBS? It was a special reading program for students to be distributed by teachers.
@@phillise1 I don't think he had the screenplay. I guess I was in third or fourth grade IIRC. :-)

I So Love This Film And The Story Of Oliver I Love Nancy And Mrs Rose😍
My favorite book growing up
Sir, you have done the world a service
TOMORROW IS MY EXAM I WAS BOORING TO READ FROM THE BOOK 😂😂
I'm playing Bill Sykes in Oliver! Early next year so I'm trying to find as many adaptations of Twist as I can to best define my version of the character.
Thank you so much for uploading the Tim Curry version
Tim Curry is great at looking awful but his voice and speech patterns are too genteel for Sikes. And when he tries to look crazy he just looks surprised. He can play an upscale psycho beautifully, but he just can't be brutish enough to be Bill.
I just finished listening to an audio book of Oliver Twist read by Jonathan Keeble (from the app "Hoopla") and Keeble's voicing of Sykes is fantastic and brilliantly portrays how heartlessly cold Bill is.
The version with Robert Newton as Sykes is compelling. He's a bad one.
Clive Donner & Nick Bicat made a hell of a team! Beautiful work!
What a great picture !!! Thanks a lot ...
OLIVER
is a very strong and ready to fight for whatever that belongs to him
Very true but is a bit afraid and is strong when he is ready
Thank you so much. What a treat to watch this version.
Clive Donner who directed that movie also served as editor/director of other movies based on Charles Dickens's novel, A Christmas Carol starting with Scrooge (1951) and director in A Christmas Carol (1984).
Incidentally, Michael Hordern played Marley in Scrooge and George C. Scott played Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, both actors having played Brownlow and Fagin respectively in Oliver Twist (1982)
Back in the 80s Tim was so good at playing bad.
Thank you for the movie
Tim curry excellent actor
Wow,looking back at this last week and 2015 is good, didnt watch the whole video last week,I also watched oliver twist clips back in 2015.

Oliver was cute little one for 9 years old boy, I wish I have a son so cute and have kind heart, nice enough and always nice to handsome ❤️❤️👦
Raise a child in absolute poverty treat him awful work him 14 hours a day, feed him next to nothing and never show any affection, keep the details of his life and family a secret then you'll get a well behaved child like you see here lol
@@danuk2136 Dickens's intended message was that it could happens even to middle class people when sad circumstances in life lead to such a plight, so don't brush it away. David Copperfield BTW has the same message.
@@danuk2136 But Oliver was an excepttion to the rule. And then some. Dickens created him as virtuous beyond the point of being realistic. Oliver is a mythic boy who never was.
@@theenemyofthearrogant4784 Yep. Oliver was middle-class and circumstances still left him the the workhouse. Dickens wanted to show the higher classes what it was like so they would take action. Oliver they could more easily identify with, because he was one of them.
