Inside, a group of abuelas are chattering away around a 1950s style laminate table, and they’re packing up the completed tamales by the dozen. I felt like I was smuggling contraband as I made my way back to the car with my brown paper bag. They were very good tamales, though. 💜
This is how it’s done around here. It’s too much work to make alone and too much work to only make small batches. In our area we have regular tamale guy come by yelling “tamale, tamalitos! Tamale!” You go outside and he’s got piping hot tamales for $1.25 each and if he doesn’t have any of the kind you need he summons his brother from an adjacent area to bring some. It’s a whole family business. He comes by 2 or 3 times a week. However, if you need your fix and don’t catch him when they come by the family has 2 guys at our two 7-11s every single morning. We live in Southern California. Tamales are kind of a big deal here.
