  • My aunt Marcelka Hrabovská is a master in decorating eggs with a barley straw. While she was visiting me in the USA we did Facebook live video so you can see how to prepare the straw and decorate eggs with cut out pieces of straw. We also talked about some traditions and fun facts. Hope you enjoy it! 😊

    Amazing artist! I thought the wax decorated Ukranian eggs were complicated but this is wild. I wonder how much she could make on eggs auctioned on ebay? They could be sent in very cushiony packaging in the box and insured.

      I am sometimes able to sell them. I sell each for $30. It doesn't pay for her time since one takes 16 hours, but I think it is decent price people are willing to pay. They always sell out fast. :)

    Please tell her she is a true artisan she is a keeper of the culture.. my heritage is both German and Ukrainian and I just love the Ukrainian painted eggs.
    Is there a place in Canada or the USA where we could purchase these beautiful pieces of work?

      Thank you Rita! Will let her know. She is not able to make too many since they take so much work for her. She might be visiting Houston week after Easter where she will sell her eggs and demonstrate the art. She can only sell in person. She also sell during Easter activities in the Czech Republic. I wish it would be more available.

    I found this video a few weeks ago while searching for information on this technique. I was disheartened to hear that barley straw was necessary, rather than wheat straw. I said as much to my sister, who replied "We have that in the barn." *What?* "Yeah, Stephanie grew some for a micro-brewing experiment a few years ago. It's still up there..." So far I have created one straw covered egg. The design is large scale and the pieces aren't very regular, but I'm working on it. Are there any English language books on this art-form? Also, does Ms. Hrabovska recommend any varnishes for protecting the eggs, or should they be left alone after the straw is applied?
    Thank you so much for this incredibly practical tutorial!

    • @czechcookbook
      @czechcookbook  Před 6 lety +1

      You can also use wheat straw. Barley is just the best one to use. I am happy to hear you have some. :) That is wonderful you are trying to decorate them. Large pieces are great for beginners. :) Try to do search on Amazon for some books. I saw some. After the straw is applied, next day you gently wipe any leftover glue. That is all. Nothing else is added. :)
