The completely psychotic thing is that this cartoon was created to /increase black representation/ in cartoons. The reason it got made in the first place is because the director got approached by a group of black actors complaining about the lack of black characters in cartoons, and they went on voice every black character in it (the remaining characters, like the worm, were voiced by Mel Blanc).
This is not to say it was uncontroversial at the time: white America didn't give a shit, but the NAACP were not at all happy about it (unsurprisingly).
Yeah, they were a jazz band that was friends with the animator or director and wanted to create a cartoon with black people in it lol
I don't see it as psychotic.
it simply shows a very simple truth.
trying to get forced representation is silly and leads to silly things.
If you want to see more of something you are probably gonna have to make more of it via your money or your efforts.
And despite all of that it doesn't mean it will be something everyone else wants to see.
welp. They tried.
@@scout360pyroz it's not forced representation. black actors didn't have ANY roles, that was the problem.
It's almost like the animator said "Okay, you want more black representation in cartoons? Bet, I got you..." And just let the bigotry command the ink and paint on the panels. But, it's a product of its time. All we can do is learning from it and keep it moving. 💯

It’s kind of breaks me a little bit seeing people here say that the 2021 restoration is better when Historian had to merge 2 copies together to get something passable, with little to no blue and green in both prints to work with, is better than the new restoration, which had most of the color there to begin with. All these shots here showcase the blue and green that’s supposed to be there on the new restoration for every scene while the old one is very “mushy” with scenes being very inconsistent in colors since he had to do corrections on every scene one by one, getting as much color as possible, and repeat for the next scene since the colors wouldn’t look right compared to previous scene, if that makes any sense.
TLDR; the new restoration is pretty much better in every way color wise due to a better print being used
I think it's because of contrast. The newer version is objectively better as it has more data but because it isn't so bright it seems worse from afar. Especially watching from phone.
Someone needs to play with curves in the new one
The contrast is awful mate. Every color has been given a blue filter. Even colors that shouldn't have blue have blue on it. That's probably why. There is no instance of pure black in the 2024 restoration at all. Even during the ending card. Ofc people aren't going to prefer it.
Oh how sad
i prefer the old one because doesnt look as washed out to me. the new one just looks tinted. but its cool they tried to restore ancient media so im not shitting on them or anything.
The scene at 0:23 already shows that the new restoration is better. Ask yourself why would they intend for the princes whole face to blend into a pitch black background. @@filozof90 it was made directly after Disney made their version of Snow White with the mind-set that it was cracking jokes on Disney first, the African-Americans of the day also understood this at the time, because WB's favorite game has always been trolling Disney since they both opened their doors...and some jazz parodies.
This is also the only one of the Censored 11 that ever gets any exposure due to it being the most popular short and it's trolling Disney is more obvious here. Not to mention this design of So' White is later modified into Mary Melody (😂) on Tiny Toons.

bruh 💀
I'm not referring to the uploader, but I want to clarify that this is an extremely racist portrayal of African Americans. Not just in the 21st century, but especially for the 20th century African Americans. In the original footage, the seven dwarfs talk about how they're 'going to war,' and wear ww1 helmets while holding rifles. The reason why they drew them like this was most likely because the cartoon was released in 1943. During WW2 many African Americans faced segregation and were treated as second-class class-citizens. They were most likely cooks, or mechanics, but not soldiers. This cartoon reinforces the idea that Black's couldn't become infantry. In the original cartoon, they're found to be sleeping while Coal Black takes the apple and they only find out that she'd been tricked right after she had been poisoned. This is also likely to be spite from the first World War, as returning African Americans faced the same treatment as they did when they left, leading to riots of Red Summer of 1919. It might be funny to watch, but it is disturbing.
And some people are saying this is accurate
Um…. No.
Look at most of the other loony tune cartoons from this era. The older World War I style helmets were commonly used throughout their cartoons and in a large amount of propaganda posters.
Many units in the early part of the war were using older issue equipment in tandem with newer equipment.
@@MatthewChenault are you saying my assumption of helmets and their relation to the time period is inaccurate?
@@pneumon6990, yes because you have to make the comparison to other cartoons before making such a statement. The old Doe-Boy Helmet was simply commonplace in propaganda pieces, even when they weren’t as ubiquitous by the time many of these shorts came out.

@@HermitKing731 Which is dumb since it haven’t come out yet. I mean it obviously won’t be good but still… And again, I’d rather have it released and be terrible rather than the opposite. Of all animations to restore
I like and hate how much of a difference it makes because the blue does not make it feel good on many different things but the colors are definitely more balanced for the 24 version
as the 21 version I prefer in general because I get to see it have color and life in most of the scenes that have vibrant colors like the apple or tires in the beginning. Overall, 24 is better at mixing colors into one balance as the 21 is better at more standout pop to ones that are alone. The best since to look for that is the end with the fire
the 2024 version has too much sharpening, you can see the ringing along the lines
There was no extra sharpening
That's because you are watching in 360p.
Ok am I the only freak here who thinks Coal Black's character herself is dope af? Her design is cute and sexy and her overall character is just cool and funny. Like I want a silly cartoon show about her just learning how to navigate her world in the setting of the newly "freed" Black Americans. It could be funny and relevant so long as it were show-run over overseen by black american(s).
A bit of devil's advocate: The white seven dwarves from the disney film seem to be pretty absurd looking caricatures of short old white men. The only reason the Coal Black dwarves are racist is because it's poking fun at a subjugated group. Coal Black herself is actually an adorably designed and endearing character not being made to look any sillier than many other naive white damsel cartoon characters. Again, the touchiness is all because of the stain of slavery was so fresh and still persists today.
The film "Triplets of Bellville" from a decade or so ago can offer some great perspective on how disturbingly hyper-caricatured even white people can be in animation-- The secondary protagonist has a horrifying angular giant horse-nose; arguably beyond equivalent to a black cartoon character's exaggerated pink lips. It's all about context and execution to justify the character design absurdity.
I can't really tell by what's been said if Coal Black was made in good faith or not even by 1940s white standards so I won't go to bat for it any further. I'm just saying it looks to have some redeeming qualities and I think it could actually survive a highly scrutinized reboot.
I know she's adorable. I would love to see a cartoon of her like that. There was potenial here. Sigh😮💨
