  • As much as I love both of these cars, I could only choose one at this point. These are a few of the reasons I decided to buy a Porsche 718 Spyder over a 911.

    Charlie, you and I think very similarly. I'm NOT a convertible guy but LOVE this convertible. Love all your points. Just one other. It's MID ENGINED. Best drivers' car Porsche has ever made. And like you, I'm on a list for a GT3. Been told 4 years. I'll have had my fill of the Spyder by then. I'll park it and let it appreciate as the LAST naturally aspirated, manual transmissioned, mid engine non electric porsche. Love the way it looks top up AND top down. I really get a laugh when I read so many comments about the various “handling advantages” of this model or that…..
      The handling of most cars today far exceed the capabilities of most drivers…..so their “reviews” are meaningless.

The only modifications I have done is Akrapovic OAP and tied the exhaust valves to be open all the time. Sounds perfect. Also installed brackets on LW bucket seats that lean back for a more comfortable position (I highly recommend).

    • @charliemanger
      @charliemanger  Před rokem +1

      Nice! I was debating on just doing the OAP's and leaving the factory muffler alone, but it's quite tempting to get an aftermarket muffler section too! I definitely want to get the valve controllers to force them open. I'll have to check out the seat brackets. I actually really like how the buckets sit as-is, but some added adjustability might be nice for experimenting with driving positions. Really appreciate the feedback!

      @@charliemanger lots of youtube videos about the exhaust. Best thing is to go in phases and not all at once. If you're ok with the valves open all the time like me, just have the lines disconnected and zipped tied back. Save you $500 bucks from buying the Cargraphic Valve Controller. You can reverse it just as easy and it takes minutes. I'm completely satisfied with the way the car sounds today, but if I ever have to scratch the itch to go with more sound, then it will be aftermarket headers and keeping the OEM back box.

      Rennlist forum has a few members who have used a collar to hold the valve open partially during the lame sounding RPM range of the 718 spyder/GT4 and makes it sound similar to the high RPM range when down low. It costs less $100 and fully reversible. Check it out. Yes, you are still left with factory system and sound effects but that may suffice for some.

      Tough one. Really depends what your use is for. The 911 is such a great car everywhere, but if it’s a sunshine, special occasion car, the Boxster platform is a lot of fun. If it’s a 911 GTS or any of the performance versions, I’d say no. Also, it depends how much the engine matters. I prefer the 4.0L naturally aspirated engine in the GTS. It’s really a special engine. But a Carrera S makes more power and it probably quicker. Tough choice man! But I don’t think you can go wrong either way. Dang it, you’re right. One of the best reasons is because it’s naturally aspirated! lol

    The 6th point will probably be the fact that its value will increase over the time !

      Very true! Definitely hopeful of that, but you’ve got to buy what you love first! It’s just a bonus if they happen to increase in value!

    It’s really hard to choose this over a C8 Z51.

      For sure! I would just say, ask yourself why you want the car to begin with. If it’s for pure performance numbers over everything, then you simply can’t beat a C8 for the price. They’re crazy value for money. But, in terms of a special feeling, driver engaged, tactile experience, the Porsche is hands down the better car for that person. Unfortunately, the manual transmission was the biggest killer for me on C8s.

    Great video and viewpoint. That spec is atrocious though. I can usually appreciate any porsche and the spyder is very difficult to ruin but someone succeeded here.

    Real sports cars and race cars are hard tops, when’s the last time you saw a race car track with a rag top?

      Early 2000s Le Mans Prototype class cars, Porsche 917/30, Porsche 936, lots of 1960s sports car racing cars (original Shelby Cobra), and every single Formula 1 car for the past 70+ years. No rag tops, but they're definitely open top race cars, just to name a few!
