Liz is meeting the parents of her new boyfriend Pepijn for the first time at their family night, where it becomes clear that his mother, Ingrid, dominates as matriarch. Meeting in-laws is never easy to do, but for Liz it's complicated by the fact that Pepijn's family takes playing very, very seriously. And when Ingrid is determined to win at any cost, it makes for one very stressful night for Liz.
Writer-director Jan van Gorkum's unique dark comedy possesses both a looseness and precision in capturing the unique familial dynamics of one particular family. Seen through the eyes of a newcomer, the short ably portrays a tapestry of human relationships, as well as the rollercoasters and upheavals they create for the family members.
Precise, funny and sharply observed writing lay out the minefield of tensions and power plays within the family, and the script is brought to life by a strong ensemble cast that handle both the very real drama while showcasing its absurdity. And when tensions come to a head, the film spins into unexpected directions that nevertheless make sense within the unique emotional dynamic of the family.

This... my god, there are no words. utterly insane. I went from simpatizing with the guy, to the girl, to hating the mom, to fearing the boyfriend, to cheering the girlfriend, to loving the parents in the span of like 10 seconds.
I expected her to walk back in like "only joking".

This is a perfect demonstration of how little you need to make a great short film. The location is just a stage space that's been minimally dressed, props are just a game board and drinks. Everything that makes this work is in the script and how its acted, which is perfect if you don't have a budget, but it demands that you know how to cast well and that you have good writing discipline
This is how movies used to be before fancy special effects came along. try watching anything from Alfred Hitchcock

One hopes he was right about her, as she seemed to be quite an engaging and affectionate young woman. In fact, her behavior towards him didn't seem to evince, to me, at least, that she wasn't genuinely taken with him.
On the other hand, the alleged subterfuge, while extreme, once explained, had a charming and creative quality to it, that, as openly and friendly as presented, seemed to be an actual means of welcoming, allowing the parents to be acquainted with a serious girlfriend, although, again, by a means, one not likely to be encountered very often. Yet, it's almost as if, perhaps, due to her intelligence, she recognized that this manifest bonhomie, was an elaborate way of playing her for a fool, as the infidelity charge, was indeed, the case. For her to act with unvarnished anger, at being accepted in a family, is reasonably hard to reflexively understand.
Such a conclusion, leads one to wonder, if, as an innate aspect of his personality, everyone he becomes involved with, responds by straying, at some point, and this parlor trick, has been repeated many, many times. Naturally, these perceptions, could be totally off the mark, as I may find out from responses that it prompts.🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️

First I thought it was going to be a bloody massacre, then I was annoyed that the boyfriend thought that this was a good in-laws introduction, and finally I was mad at the girlfriend; too many twists

Well, this was just fanfuckingtastic. One of the best best short films I have ever seen. Amd I've seen a lot. The plot, the delivery, the script, the atmosphere, the twists, the ending ( was mind blowingly unexpected), all of the components to this short film were truly great. Great actors, just brilliant.

Honestly I had no clue where this was trying to go. I thought they were going to hold her hostage, but then they all started laughing and I thought she was going to start laughing to but then she stormed off because I thought she couldn’t take the joke, and then it turned out that they did that to scare her and/or piss her off because she cheated on him. 🤣

At first i thought this would be mother - daughter in law drama, then i thought it would be a horror film, then...... Suddenly, it was meant to be a joke but it isn't🙂 MIND BLOWING
I thought that the mum was really abusive and the guy forcing his then gf to play was like a dominant move to put his mum into her place.
This was a rollercoaster ride of the unexpected, so many twists and turns. The ending was totally unexpected. This was a macabre delight

Great setup, great twist within a twist! I liked every aspect of this, especially in the way it built up tension before the amazing sucker punch.
The amount of times I’ve watched this is ridiculous. It’s absolutely gorgeously made and terrifying and rather funny. ❤
The best think of this script is that the conditions of the story can make little mistakes look like the acting's even more natural.
For example at 9:23 the guy's trying so hard not to laugh and we don't know if it was intentional or the actor was actually trying not to laugh, it's brilliant.
They captured that feeling when you play 12 hours board game and have a great argument in the middle you still have to finish it so perfectly :-D
