Rocky is a young London teenager, but her life is anything but youthful and carefree. She is responsible for caring for her invalid father, doing laundry and cooking for him, and lives in a rough neighborhood where she is harassed on the street going to and from the laundromat.
But at the laundromat one day, she meets the more outgoing, confident Sasha, developing a fascination -- and perhaps a bit of a crush -- on her. It's the only bright spot in an increasingly oppressive life. But Rocky's fascination plays itself out in unexpected ways, leading to volatile and dangerous consequences.
Written and directed by James Arden, this taut, pared-down short drama captures the claustrophobic world of a young woman weighed down by the pressures of life. Told with thoughtful visual acuity, the narrative carefully catalogs the indignities of Rocky's life, until it builds to a visceral, charged breaking point.
The story begins with ominous shots of objects and surroundings, layered over with the sounds of muffled shouting. The juxtaposition of stillness and violence unfurls into more fleshed-out squalor that Rocky must navigate. She is grabbed at on the street and leered at by local boys as she goes about her strict, humdrum routine.
But worst of all is the sense of latent menace she faces at home, by a father that demands dinner, criticizes her cooking and barely seems to notice her -- or that she's grown-up. And when he does, his gaze is unsettling, as is the way he dominates the frames he shares with Rocky, exerting a dark shadow even at the margins of the image.
Within this milieu -- captured in muddled, moody colors and lighting that draws out the dinginess in Rocky's life -- Rocky is growing up, questioning and exploring her identity like any other teenager. Meeting the charismatic Sasha is part of that process, and the storytelling weaves their mutual captivation with great delicacy, starting with stolen glances that build to a seemingly more intimate connection.
Actor Elisha Applebaum as Rocky captures the wondrousness of budding desire as well as how Rocky must stuff down her feelings and sense of self to cope with her life. Her infatuation with Sasha -- played with great spirit by actor Eleanor Grace -- offers her an island of escape in a hard life. But when the two parts of Rocky's life unexpectedly collide, Rocky can only hold in her trauma for so long.
Endlessly compelling and darkly disquieting, LEOPARD is a coming-of-age story in many ways. But this particular initiation into adulthood is marked by aggression and the constant threat of violence. It ends, though, on a grace note of hope -- a tiny gesture of connection amidst chaos and terror. I wouldn’t consider this a “strict” father…more like a man who treats his poor daughter like a slave!!! What kind of father barges into his daughter’s room without knocking and then looks at her bras? Creepy!
Exactly. I don't know what triggered me most, the inappropriate use of the word 'strict' or the father character.

This was a good short story. Both girls form a bond, since both are always harassed and bullied by the men in their lives.
The father is not strict he is evil. He treats his daughter like a slave and a wife and unfortunately there are people like this out there.
Ouch that was painful to watch. If the father has the energy and physical effort to abuse his daughter, then he clearly has some capacity to take care of himself but he doesn't. Somehow he behaves as if his uncooperative dependency on his daughter is justified because of his disability.
The separate instances of sexual harassment in the beginning and later on in the short film, coupled with the girl's domestic predicament has left me wondering just how traumatizing and unfairly difficult life can be for women.
I bet the way he treated his daughter predates his disability i also believe that he treated his wife the same way he know treats his daughter while she was alive and it has nothing to do with his disability rather the way he views woman, i.e all woman should be subservient to men
Just think how much better the world could be if women and young girls were not routinely traumatized by men and boys.
@@betsysoutherland6069 This is a powerful film, but abuse is not limited to females being victims. We could be viewing a similar film about a friendless teenage boy abused at home and bullied in the street.

This dad is so down in life. He drags everyone down. Just because he is disabled doesn't mean you can't cook for yourself. Heck most of us still do it. I won't drag my adult kids to help unless it was severe but asking is one thing demanding is a no go.
Yes of corse he can cook but im sure he dosnt know how just like im sure that the dad was abusive to his wife while she was alive and he transfered that abuse to his daughter after his wife died and that his abuse and control has nothing to do with his disablity rather its all about how he views woman.
@@resolecca yes that would be true too. I was just basing it off the beginning of the show. At least in my family my mom and dad both cooked. But I learned from my mom for somethings and taught myself the rest. So it works for me at least

Honestly I hate fathers like that, mine is the same. A miserable git and therefore its not enough that just he is unhappy, hes tried hard to turn us all the same way. I will never understand these types of parents.

He wants her to fill his wifes place. Her take care of him. When it should be him taking care of her. Yes he is disabled but still not right.
What a sad depiction of men as a whole but I get that...as a woman I feel how she felt. Ashamed, embarrassed, violated, abused...but then a beautiful, strong woman comes along and changes everything. I loved the ending.

From the moment the arsehole groped Rocky it was always going to be uncomfortable to watch, and so it was.
Disheartening to see the Daniel character turn out to be the way that he was.
An all round miserable existence for Rocky.

Me too. I got triggered since the first guy who sexually assaulted her but the film was too... well made.
This film is exceptional on so many levels: the script (character development and dialogue), directing, outstanding performances by the young women, cinematography. But the Sound Editing is stellar - subtle underscore overlapping subtle music, sounds of the zipper, the wind, breathing, running water, the door... it requires serious skill to attain a balance of sound weaving in and out to support the story. Kick-ass work by all; shout out to sound team.

Everyone talking about the grope at the beginning or the abusive father but no one mentions how the potential love interest horrible turns into abuser too at 12:12. Makes you feel so bad for that poor girl and many others that go through similar situations everyday.

What love interest? That is a haresser who most likely haresses most women who he considers weak enough. His father is supposed to be the person who protects her her entire life. That is at least what good parents do.

@@timc6669 no it wasn't, it was the black kid, you can tell by the way she looked at him when he left. This happened right after her Dad told her to go outside and play. She'd even watch him play basketball from her window. She didn't look at that girl in that way.. she was envious, jealous of her. Idolized her in a way and was trying to emulate the girl bc she had things that her father wouldn't let her have. Stop turning everything into your own agenda. Stay in reality.

This was very uncomfortable to watch. Unfortunately, I feel this is real-life for many women and girls. Violence all around her. Great work and I really like that the film is shorter as I got all it meant. Very powerful. I couldn't help but think about the repercussions of her action with Daniel as it would surely come back around due to the mindset that was shown. Thanks for sharing this.

it really does, in asian cultures we are taught to respect our elders especially our parents no matter what, even if they verbally/physically abuse us. So opening up to another family member is less likely going to change anything they'll tell you to be patient with your parents and that it's sort of normal to be abused once in a while. Plus they don't like to intefer in how anyone parents their kids

I wouldn't have dreamed of mistreating my beloved daughter in this ghastly fashion. She's grown up to be a strong, healthy, confident, young woman. (And a writer! Yay!) A girls first (and most important) relationship with a man, is with her father. DON'T BLOW IT!!

@ric- A well-written/ directed/ performed film or play doesn't give exact linear answers to questions about the characters' motivations. It is up to the audience to do the work of engaging, generating interest and connection. That's what makes this film powerful (as opposed to lazy writing spoonfeeding a lazy audience).

That grope at 1:16 is so much part of a woman's life. Glad it's in the film. Why hide reality? No need. Walking down any street you can be subject to this. What a world we live in. When is the earth crashing into the Sun again? Soon hopefully? yeah.

I've never seen a single woman over 10 be groped. I've seen some kids do it, that's it. This would indicate 3 possibilities: 1) people are lying or grossly exaggerating 2) it doesn't happen where I live 3) I have magical powers that somehow every time I show up it stops this from happening

I'd hope that this doesn't reflect the "standard way of living" from where you're from - no-one should have to endure a life like this.
The day to day drudgery is one thing that many accept is just a part of live, but the attitudes towards women, (girls) was horrendous.
The scumbag having a grope was bad enough, while the Dad was an absolute brute - he should be protecting his daughter, but chose to use her as his downtrodden free carer... while also abusing her.
Then there was Daniel, who came across as a glimmer of hope - didn't last long though.
I really hope that this isn't the norm in your part of the World - I understand that it happens, but there's something far, far wrong with society if this is seen as normal.
It should be second nature to protect those around you - particularly those more vulnerable than yourself.

The younger generation are getting worse this video is quite tame, there is a lot worse things going on in the streets of London.
@@Ayd2222 I grew up in a very working class area of Glasgow in the 70s and 80s - I couldn't say what went on behind closed doors, but I wouldn't have thought that this was the norm.
I actually lived in South London for a while - Croydon to be exact - I actually lived next door to a launderette on the Waddon Road when I was 18, but I did wander up to a few other parts of South London - Clapham and Battersea, and up to North London bursting squats for a laugh - it was very easy in the late 80s.
I was definitely a fish out of water, but I was confident enough that things never got bad for me - that said, I knew my limits - never got involved in anyone's business, and didn't ask questions that shouldn't be asked.
I lived with a group of guys who had my back, but I would never have brought it on top for them anyway.

I Can't Believe Her Father Treats her that way. The Camera first focused on A Cross Signifying she comes from A Strict christian background where the Bible is shoved down her throat, no wonder she seems so suppressed in being a human being. The Bible says honor your father and mother, how could someone honor someone so deplorable in how they treat someone with no respect all for the simple fact because He is her father, so she is seen as property rather than a human being a servant. The Scariest thing about this short film is that people like her father very well exist in the real world.

This actress I hope to god hasn’t had this treatment in real life, she depicted it like she had. The way she grabbed her necklace and the pain she showed, it felt so real. Kudos to the film makers. Truly remarkable
1:15 - I am wondering just how many of us women have experienced something similar. I'm willing to bet it's close to 100%, at least for those of us who have grown up, or currently live, in an urban or suburban area. I am not familiar with rural areas, but perhaps it is close to 100% there, too.

I also wondered at this point about how many women experience this sort of behaviour. I'm so sorry you have to go through this. I was groped by a stranger once when I was young ...so I used to think of myself as a victim all the time but a friend of mine told me that women are groped multiple times throughout their lives. It is so disgusting!

Holy wow. I was so engrossed and the end scene with the hands gave me shivers and led me to imagining the possibilities. Superbly acted, directed, filmed, coloured, and scored. Bravo!
This was pretty great. I particularly like how there was very little dialogue and yet we still understand almost exactly what the writer wants us to. Very well done!! Man, it must absolutely SUCK growing up in this time!!! I am so thankful that I was a child with NO DIGITAL BS to rule my every minute of every day!!!!! Just normal things that kids should do!!! It must be amazingly difficult for these kids today, I am sympathetic for them, definitely don't envy what they have to deal with, that's for sure!!!
What does the "digital BS" have to do with the storyline?
This could have played out in the 60s, 70s or 80s were it not for the clothes the characters wore.

The entire time I am wondering what she is thinking and feeling because everyone else speaks for her. She is never allowed to speak for herself. Other people write their own narrative on her as though she is invisible and doesn’t matter or count.

How does she have so much laundry when she only has one outfit that she wears everyday.

This was a bit of a trigger as I had an abusive mother growing up and a workaholic father who was never around. It is sad that such things continue to happen to young people.
Wow, that’s a powerful film and actors are outstanding.
Not all men are abusive like shown in the film. But this film needs to be seen because it reflects a reality that is too common in all societies. The awareness that it brings does not guarantee that societies will move to minimize this. Without such awareness, however, the problem will be much more prevalent.
We know not all men are abusive. No need to state that.

Beautifully rendered on every level - acting, writing, photography. I love the way the camera lingers on seemingly trivial things; creating an atmosphere pregnant with the subtext of a small world teeming with voluminous emotions. I want these women to be happy together.

Wow. I was holding my breath at the end and let out a big sigh when it showed them sit down and both seem to have been holding theirs also. I thought she was gonna get up and coldcock him seeing as the dad was a boxing fan. I'm glad the connection made was between the two girls who seemed to both be in great need of a friend. I didn't want it to be daniel. She needed a friend in general, but I felt better about the girl.
These films I've been watching have been short films that leave me with thoughts and feelings for days unlike most full length films made recently. Hats off to Omeleto for bringing them to us and a standing ovation to the writers, filmmakers, directors and actors/actresses that bring these gems to life. So much appreciated.
Hey Cami, so glad you enjoyed the film. Funnily enough, we did actually film Rocky punching Daniel in the face at the end too, because of the boxing connection, but decided to cut it in the end!

I think the description of the short film should not be 'A teenager questions her strict father'. This teenager's father is physically and emotionally abusive to her. Strict and abusive are not the same. The short film was well done but it was sad to think of the teenager girl living the life she does. It is obvious that the father has numerous problems but he has absolutely no right to treat his daughter the way he does.
even her name shows how controlled she is, it doesn't represent her or her interests in the slightest, only what her dad wants
The abuse of women is an ongoing ugly and quite honestly a disturbing disease that seems to never be cured. Women in these situations need to always feel empowered to fight back no matter who the abuser is. No wonder women find true love from their own gender. 👭
