In Sweden we have a saying.
"There is no cow on the ice"
It means that its no rush.
It probably comes from when farmers check the lakes in the winter. No cows means no drowning animals going through the ice.

    21:20 -
A year ago, when we were discussing Russian prewar inventory of infantry equipment, I mentioned that somewhere between 20-25% would be inoperable due to lack of maintenance and poor storage conditions. If we also take into account all the cannibalization for replacement parts for active duty equipment that has been going on, I would say that number would be closer to 30%.
If close to 50% have been pulled from storage and 30% is unusable, that leaves only 20% remaining, and that would mostly consist of older gear (LIFO).
On the front lines, we'll probably see a weird mixture of new but substandard kit (production pressures and impact of sanctions) and almost comical kit your great-grandpa might have used.
They'll push anything that might work.

Agreed!!! Putin doesn't care about the Body count, all he cares about is Territory! And I am starting to think that other Nations are going to have to start getting more involved in the war, with actual Boots on the Ground! I think the only thing to stop Putin's War everywhere is the people of Russia Rising up like it did in the 90s. Or an overwhelming Military Response that destroys most of his Military Capabilities, not just in Ukraine! I will say what you see in Ukraine is not the Real Russian Military for the most part! He is just using people he could care less about and are basically useless, and all his Old Equipment! Once he runs out of all the stuff he doesn't care about, we will either have to start fighting Russia's Real Military that it has set aside to fight NATO and The West, or he could have to retreat from all occupied Ukrainian Territory. Which I think is highly doubtful. He is like Trump, his EGO is too big to lose! And at that point if the Russian People haven't taken back their country from him, he is going to resort to Irrational decisions. Like Using the Real Russian Military, which will get destroyed as well, or the only other crazy option I can think of, NUKE'S....

One of my favorite American Southernisms is, "Bless your heart..."
That's a Southern code for "You're such an idiot." It's especially common among Southern ladies. "Awww, bless his heart..." and so forth. Nobody else can quite reproduce the sound of it from a Southern belle. You know good and well she's calling you an idiot, but they say it so sweetly that you don't care, and melt instantly anyway.

Square root of eff all is one of my favorites lately. Lol spiders. Never heard that but its getting filed away for quick reaction deployment. Yeah, I'm with you on thinking hypersonic is too expensive for the results . I suppose having the ability to manufacture them would be important for updating nuclear arsenals but I'm thinking laser weapons could make missiles obsolete no matter how fast they go. Light goes faster and lasers could be underground usng prisms and lenses to direct them to the target, or even up in tethered balloons. Anyway cheers fella.

    • @jmtpolitico80
      @jmtpolitico80 Před 18 dny +1

Couldn't agree with you more! But I think we still have some years before we can put an Operational Laser into the theatre that can take down all incoming Ballistic and Hypersonic weapons! Cause at this point we can take out something up to a mile away I believe. And it takes tons of Power and if you have Multiple Projectiles coming you'd need a lot of Lasers! I do believe it will take over Air Defense, but we still have years to go where it will be effective enough. But I very much agree with you.

I don't use it often, but there is definantly a time and place for "we're not here to f##k spiders".
I first heard it in the building industry. To me it is a way of saying "we are here to work" used both as a response to someone being surprised how quickly you got something done or as a subtle form of encouragement to "pull your finger out" and get stuff done.
"Pull your finger out" (of your ass) or "extract the digit" is quite widely used where i am the say "hurry up" at least as often as not there is a "f##k'n" added in the middle of the expression.
"For f##ks sake" or "Oh, for f##k's sake" is a widely used expression of frustration often used when dealing with the results of someones stupidity or incompetence.

The mocking comments about the Storm Shadow production line are likely related to the visible lack of automation. I think that is a valid criticism (although delivered in an unpleasant/unhelpful way).
The lack of military-industrial automation in Western European defence manufacturing - in addition to low volumes of production - are key reasons we've been unable to rapidly flex production capacity upwards when we needed it.
Very significant investment is required to go from essentially mostly-manual production to highly automated/robotised manufacture, so there are a difficult set of investment and political decisions required before that step is taken.
Of course, highly manual production can be scaled to a degree by hiring more people, but you will never achieve the same efficiencies and speed (analogy: see videos of Sunderland's Nissan plant vs building a niche sports car - it's a completely different process to do small volume minimally-automated versus high volume, highly-automated).

Jono and team. The phrase, "We're not here to f*** spider!", is I think Australian, and not Kiwi. I've not heard it before. In NZ my favourite is, "He couldn't organise a piss-up in a brewery". But that may have originally come from Ireland. Tippling philosophers of the world unite! 😀

    Wonderful work as always JP.
While I am encouraged by the destruction of Russian equipment, I question the overall significance of it on a strategic level. Using this as a significant measurement of successes assumes that Russia is restraint by their own capacity to replace equipment and kit. If this assumption is removed, such as the prospect of aid flowing in from Russia’s allies, the calculation significantly changes. The assumption that Russia’s allies will not significantly come to their aid is unrealistic. They have a significant interest in making sure that Russia wins this war. Supporting this is the fact that Russia’s allies have already started to aid them in areas of need. This is a forecast of what is to come. We have seen them offer man-portable kit such as night vision, ballistic armor vest, artillery, missals, drones, and the raw materials to manufacture weapons. There is no reason to doubt that Russia’s allies will support Russia with increase aid as needed.
If we assume that Russian’s allies will increase their aid as needed, this changes much of the calculations that I see presented by many people. In this case, dwindling Russian stockpiles, damage to their economic infrastructure (such as oil refineries), and targeting their military industrial complex will hurt but not push Russia to its knees. Russia can share weapon building expertise with its allies and use their capabilities, capacities and industries to patch gaps in its needs. Again, we have seen this already happen. But will Russia’s allies fully commit to this war? I suspect that Iran and North Korea will. China? Well, that is the question on the minds of many.
Time is not on Ukraine’s side. Ukraine does not have a year to shape the battlefield as some would suggest. They need quick and decisive victories that achieve territorial gains. The more territory that Russia gains, they more territory that Ukraine will have to liberate at a much higher cost then it would have been to hold it in a defensive position. Ukraine cannot assume that Russia will run out of equipment (if its allies aid it); it cannot be assumed that Russia will run out of troops with its vest population and ability to recruit beyond its borders - it is Ukraine that is struggling to recruit and mobilize soldiers to support this war and this will only become more challenging over time.
Assuming that Russia’s allies aid them, the longer the war drags on, the more likely it will be that this war will end at best in a frozen conflict that territorially favors Russia. The longer this war goes on the more likely that China will side with Russia as its interests in Europe and the U.S. are weakening while their interests grow in the global south. The longer this war goes on, the more costly it will be and the more likely that Ukraine’s allies will pressure to freeze the conflict. Alternatively, the longer this war continues the more likely it is that nations, including those in NATO, may have to support soldiers which will likely expand this war.
So, is it all doom and gloom? No, Ukraine can win this war. But it will take a massive infusion of aid from its allies in conjunction with Ukraine taking massive steps to increase its recruitment and mobilization efforts. Ukraine will have to come to the conclusion that war requires accepting risk, and the loss of significant detrition of troops and equipment in decisive battles. One must not be reckless with the lives of their soldiers and equipment, but one should not be paralyzed at the prospect of suffering loss in taking significant military objectives. D-Day was required as risky and painful as it was. Ukraine must come to the conclusion that time is not on its side to make decisive actions. I offer this perspective not as a criticism, but as an alternative prospective to increase the likelihood of Ukrainian victory. I question the current assumptions that seem to dismiss current Russian assistance by its allies while over emphasizing the strategic importance of degrading Russian equipment while dismissing the importance of territorial gains by both sides.

Canada has consistently been in the top 6-9 contributors to Ukraine in actual dollar amounts, depending on when each country announces new aid. As a Canadian, I understand that my great grandchildren will still be paying off the financial debt Canada has incurred from this war.

Don't underestimate many of these mercenaries that pops up amidst the Russian forces.
There must be thousands of former "freedom fighters" in post-coup, post-insurrection, post civil war states in the Sahel and elsewhere, just itching to get back into any fight and filing their teeth in anticipation of anything to sink their fangs into (not mean as a racial slur, but a general comment on the brutality and depravity that seems an integral part of many wars).
They might be rough and undisciplined, but do know how to fight.

The manic idée fixe required to say that a nation should spend its defense budget on one munition, and then give them to someone else. They’d straightaway lock up the defense minister who suggested that.

Hi JP. Yes I agree, from what I have read, hypersonic missiles are not cost effective (bang for buck literally).
US military satellites have no issue with resolution or coverage, so US military (and presumably UA) will have a firm idea on Soviet stockpiles.

The return of condottiere? Mercenaries might be a good way to go for nations wishing to evade NATO restrictions. A German company could recruit a Polish mercenary Legion etc. Then there is the CIA.

Of course he references Congress, eating frogs, etc. Check him out.

There are reports that the Russians have been using tanks as artillery support fire at times on some fronts. This shows how far Ukraine has been successful in counter battery fire and is putting russsian tanks in more vulnerable forward positions exposing them to increased drone attacks.

In addition to societal and political benefits from recruiting from abroad, the Russian government will avoid exacerbating other post-war problems - paying out different benefits, caring for large numbers of crippled and maladjusted, etc.

For the Russians at the front:
If you burn your buttocks, you have to sit on the blisters.
Obviously; if you make a mistake, you have to live with the consequences.

A donkey normally doesn't hit a stone twice.
A smart person doesn't make the same mistake twice.
