“No one was around, except me” - One of the sadder elements to this story is that Smudger didn’t even know that Duke was there with him, only a couple of yards away, locked away inside his shed. I wonder if his spectre witnessed the events of Sleeping Beauty when Duke was finally recovered from his shed. Seeing that they came back for Duke while nobody lifted a finger for him.

Then, been brushed to the side because he could only be used as a generator. Engines ignoring him while passing through. Then being forgotten, forever. Then being left to die, without anyone (except Duke) to truly remember your life. It reminds me of people passing by people in poverty. You either ignore them completely, as if they weren't there. Or you give them a grin, a head nod, or any way to show you acknowledge that they are there.
When I first saw that sence I cried since I knew duke did really care for smudger but he was still sick of him at the same time. I was extremely sad about that when he found out that smudger was dead he would’ve likly felt guilty for not being a good mentor
I'd have to agree, most of them consider Smudger as a total douche bag, even when he said, "Listen Dukie, who worries about a few spills." He was probably just fed up as in, his construction was absolute shite.
After that ending, I think there should be another audio, basically here's how the plot goes out. Duke will wake up in a dream, he ends up in his old home, "The Mid Sodor" he'll be the only engine there. Then he'll hear a faint whistle, and Smudger then will appear. Not being angry, but feeling guilt and sorrow, as he tells the old engine about how his life ended, and maybe hoping that he and Duke will meet up again. After that dream, Duke starts to feel the guilt as well, and then proposes to head out whilst the engines are asleep, he will end up meeting Smudger again, at the lakeside. From that point on, I think somebody should add onto this. My last idea is that, Duke make sures that at least once a year he will visit Smudger, or Smudger visits him.
This is a good telling of Smudger's story, being rushly built is another good reason why he kept on derailing off the tracks and that ending of Smudger being dead is a great way for him. Apart from the VRS where Smudger was shipped to Japan and others saying he's still alive and being rebuilt into Bertram are all great stories. But something about Smudge being a spirit sounds like a good idea to me. Who knows, maybe he'll be a spirit guardian like Proteus or a vengeful spirit...
I can see Smudger, after a lifetime of misfortune, would be a guardian spirit in death. He said in this story that he couldn't feel anything. Without an ounce of anger left, he would consider his best option is to look after what was left of the railway so that he might be able to atone for his mistakes and could have his sense of purpose restored.

This story was so sad. I almost cried. Smudger wasn't reckless, he just had a building error. Poor Smudger. Awesome story narrow gauge. It was sad but good. That ending was kinda spooky and depressing.

Holy shit this brings back memories. 8 at one point when this first came out I drew a picture of the sence where smudger is is about to get crushed by the boulder and I made another picture of the image shown in the intro. Good times. I miss when I had more time to my self and could be left alone more when I was younger. Very nostalgic and a damn good story that left me speechless. Honestly more than a terror story... It's a very sad story... Very very sad... Smudger it's one of my favourite engines but him story always make me sad, this one in particular is my favorite and one of the few fics that made me cry. I hope his spirit of him some day he finds the peace, or maybe the reincarnation to finally have the life he never had the opportunity to live... Or His role as a protective spirit, comforting the engines when they get sick or are going to be scrapped.
Actually I think Smudger was turn into Bertram but as a saddle tank engine and he fell off the old iron bridge and survived but lost his memory and became one of the prince class like duke
I feel like I'm listening to an Untold Story Version of the Five Nights Of Smudger's fan-game series - in an interesting way of how his backstory would've really been in the TV series for what he always wanted to be... a "really useful engine".
This somehow makes what happened to Smudger that much more tragic, I mean his derailing was due to a build error. That everyone, even Duke, ended up condeming him for something he couldn't even help, not simple carelessness.
I wonder if sometime, someone will come to clear out the MSRs remains and sees the rusted remains of an engine. Maybe they'll do something with him and let his poor soul rest.
