- The connecting power of prayer.
QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS:
How do you best connect with God in prayer?
HERE'S HOW:
Today, pray in a new way. Don’t feel the need to try to make it “work”, but rather allow the prayer to work on you and your connection to God.
- Slow down.
- Slowly pray the Lord’s Prayer.
- Meditate on each phrase and allow it’s meaning the well up within you.
- Make this a practice in your daily life.
The Lord's Prayer (paraphrased by Dallas Willard)
Dear Father always near us,
may your name be treasured and loved,
may your rule be completed in us-
may your will be done here on earth in
just the way it is done in heaven.
Give us today the things we need today,
and forgive us our sins and impositions on you
as we are forgiving all who in any way offend us.
Please don’t put us through trials,
but deliver us from everything bad.
Because you are the one in charge,
and you have all the power, and the glory too is all yours-forever-
which is just the way we want it!

How do you best connect with God in prayer?
When I am in nature away from the city. Living in LA makes that something we have to schedule, but I don’t do enough of it.
When I am sitting quietly alone listening for Him, with only a desire to be near Him
Dallas Willards paraphrase of the Lords Prayer gives me greater understanding on how to pray and helps me to focus better. I added the paraphrase as a prayer in the you version Bible app and pray it frequently. Here it is in case anyone wants to copy it.

My husband and I have been talking about the different versions of The Lord's Prayer. I say debts and debtors, he says trespasses, we both say for Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever amen. I think God hears us no matter the version.
When I was a child at Wednesday prayer meetings with my parents the prayers were so long and so meaningful that I thought I couldn’t pray good enough. One night at bedtime I shared with my Mother that I didn’t know how to pray or talk to God like I should. She put a chair beside my bed and said that I should talk to Jesus as if He was sitting on that chair and listening to me. My Mother had such powerful wisdom delivered in such quiet meaningful ways. Now I talk and listen to God when I’m awake. With my eyes open!!! It’s off and on throughout the day.
Sometimes I address the Holy Spirit that lives in me, Jesus, God the Father (going to HIM through Jesus) or God The Three In ONE. It’s beyond my human understanding but I know God Loves each one of us and wants us to communicate with Him. When I really listen God does put answers in my thoughts. Being alone has its advantages - less distractions.
For the past six months, I have been very uncomfortable in prayer group settings when people tell God what to do for their problem - - they are depending on ask and you will receive when they tell God what to do. I give such glory to God, who has helped me very gradually to sort this out and realize. how much more important prayer is connecting with my Father in heaven, and with my Father here in His Kingdom ❣️
I love Dallas Wllard's paraphrase! It is especially tender-hearted, and really plumbs into some deep areas in my heart. I also love watching the 'views' scroll up in number at the same time that I am viewing the session; it really reinforces the comforting realization of John's declaration 'you are not alone' and creates a wonderful feeling of connectedness to this special community. Thank you! ❤
Wow. Thanks for sharing Dallas' paraphrased Lord's Prayer. I often s-l-o-w-l-y repeat the first line from Psalm 46:10. I will now do the same with the Lord's Prayer. Huzzah!
Thanks, Ray! love the "s-l-o-w-l-y"
Author Rosalind Rinker says “Prayer is a conversation between two people who loves each other.”
Thank you b/n. I was waiting for the whoopie lol. Here is Daniel Austin Napier’s version in his book Soul Whisperer: “therefore, pray in this way: our father in the heavens, sanctify your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done in heaven so on earth. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors. And don’t lead us into testing but rescue us from evil.” P.63 I bought his book after watching an episode of Sanctus institute with Michael Stewart Rob who had Napier as a guest. This evening after bringing the book in from my car I randomly opened it to page 63. Today I’ve said the Lords prayer more times and in more versions than I ever have in a day.
For me, no matter the particular prayer, I know it will quiet my noise if I let it. I will feel calmer and connected. Thank you, Jesus.
I find it helpful to go for a walk, it gives me the space to talk to God about what is on my mind and my heart, and prevents me from jumping too quickly to the next task.
I pray all day whenever my mind goes to Him - in worry, gratitude, need, for strength, forgiveness, help in listening well, etc. but I listen best when I am still or when outside in His creation.
As much as I can, meaning from rising to reclining. He is with me, why not talk with Him. Also special prayers, group prayers, and with you! What a blessing from our LORD. Thank you for today especially. God bless you John, Tim & team. Aloha friends
Thanks John Loving this series watching down under in New Zealand.
Where I feel the most connected in prayer is when I’m in the quietness of his presence.
I love fishing and I imagine Jesus next to me on a chair with our rods out, not saying a lot but being present with him enjoying each other’s company. The Place of quietness within my heart and soul is where I connect the deepest. Nothing to prove, nothing you want except content to be with God.
Out in the backyard under God’s Heaven every morning , hugging his trees 🌲 🙏🏼
I have been listening for a while now. Listening everyday has helped me greatly. Character study as well as Forgiveness study were especially meaningful to me. I share many devotions that I hear to friends and family!
Thank you!
I hope you can do another meeting like you did in San Jose. I was out of town and was unable to attend!
Thank you,

good morning ☀️ whoo hoo! God is so good, he is a good good Father!
Thank you Jesus for Ps John and team, Father God bless them and everyone, in Jesus’ mighty name 🙏🏻💕🍃
Thank you for sharing the Dallas version. I read it often. It has shaped me! You cannot read it without having an internal bright sadness…. He was such a gift and what he left us to ponder now and always has spiritually formed me. What you bring is like that too! Thank you!
Love that. "internal bright sadness" wow. Thanks for sharing
I think I most often connect with God in prayer at night. Waking up ruminating on how I’ve hurt many of the people closest to me often drives me to ask for God’s blessings for those people and sometimes for people I’ve just encountered that day.
At other times I just pray Lord have mercy on me, a sinner.
I'm forever grateful for your christian faith content. You have continue Willard's unremarkable legacy. I thank God for that.
I best connect with God in prayer early in the morning when I'm alone and everything is still. Especially if I'm able to be outside on a walk or run.
Thanks again John! I trust the Lord to warm your soul with these truths, as He does ours.
I’m often wakeful!between 2am and 4am for a while. I remember Chuck Smith used to say he found that an excellent time for prayer. It is for me too.
Oh gosh, I am definitely not a consistent prayer but mostly I pray when the thought comes to mind to pray. I seem not able to commit to a ‘prayer time’ every day and I excuse myself by telling myself that He is always listening, so it doesn’t need a particular time! And I really enjoyed Dallas’ version of the Lord’s Prayer.
Greatest gift CONNECTEDNESS!
Sometimes God and I will sit together in silence and stare at the problem together for a long time. Sometimes He will then say, “I’ve got this; you in?” Sometimes I’m in.
That's beautiful. Thanks for sharing
Did he really say that or are you lying?
I remind myself who He is and how dependent I am on Him.
Wow! thank you for your insight and I thank God for you and the way the Holy Spirit has lighted your heart and mind on The Lord’s prayer. Your friendship with Dallas Willard and his shared wisdom in his books help enlighten me as a fellow seeker thirsting for God.
I pray in bed in the morning and then all through the day and last thing at night and mostly I'm thanking my Abba for everything I have in the moment
Thank you! My heart is finding the very word it needed for today.. God give me today what I need… is profoundly freeing from my ruminating on what might be to what is.. God eternal and knowing encourages me to live in just today. ❤
Wonderful! Thank you for sharing your heart and your journey with us - we are grateful Blessings Bucky
John the Lord's prayer is my favorite prayer. For God knows what is on our minds and in our hearts. I feel it covers everything I would pray for. I try and say it every morning.
GOD please heal this cancer and disease
I love Dallas’ paraphrase! My emotions welled up in me to connect with God when I heard it.
Thank you John!
Whooppeee!🙌🙌🙌
Yeah!
amen

*From "The Gospel of Thomas", Quote; 14. Jesus said to them: If you FAST, you will beget a sin upon yourselves;*
*and if you PRAY, you will be CONDEMNED; and if you give alms, you will do evil to your spirits. End Quote...*
Tim I would love it if you could do a recap video after the series with John reading Dallas prayer
Oooh, sounds cool. When you say "if you could do.." do you mean have John do a recap or me do a recap? Love the Dallas prayer idea, I think we should put that as a stand alone video for people to engage with. It's so powerful.
Hmmm, for this I think John. He has such a calming voice, it would be a great fit for this type of video. I have really love the recap you have done.
Thanks Tim
