Everyone should have a manual for their first car in my opinion, it keeps you engaged better and help keeps you from using your phone or becoming other wise distracted. My first car is (I'm still driving it) a 2007 Honda civic si, which are only sold with manual transmissions, as they should be.
CR, thank you for all you do!
Observation #1- Give your teen a vehicle with a manual transmission which will demand driver engagement because slack, automatic transmission habits are so easy to pick up.
Observation # 2- The gentleman with the glasses is distressingly enthusiastic for a CR video.
There’s a really important part that always seems to be missed, and is here as well. Set your side mirrors properly! Many people have them set too far inward to the point you can see the sides of your own car. Adjust them outward so cars approaching from behind transition from the rear view mirror, to the side mirror, and finally to your peripheral view through the window.
To me it’s scary as hell that people don’t know about every single thing she hit on in the video all the advice that was given wasn’t already known by the driver. I knew all of this before I even got behind the wheel for the first time. The drivers education in the US is a joke. They talk law and rules and that’s it. No mention of safe seating position. What type of car to buy. What safety features are standard on all cars as of today and when they become started. They don’t tell you what each safety actually does. And most important they don’t tell you about active safety features like automotive emergency braking etc. we need to change this badly.
You had him place his hands at 10 & 2! That is old thinking because of injury from airbag deployment. Most experts recommend 9 & 3, or even 8 & 4 nowadays.
The Toyota SUV featured in this video is a good safe car. It has Toyota's safety sense. I don't know if it has blind spot mirrors. Toyota's infotainment system is designed to be less distracting. You can connect your phone and use the steering wheel buttons to answer the phone. Of course, it doesn't let you text while driving but can read text out loud.

I'm sorry, this feels too "slick". It's over-produced like it was made for the Discovery Channel or HGTV. And I'm not saying they don't have some interesting stuff, but the style itself just feels false to me.
Andrew is a good driver. wish more teens were that attentive
