Speaking as someone who comes from a seriously snowy city (Duluth MN) snow tires completely transform a car. My wife and I put Michelin X-Ice tires on her car based on CR's ratings and it transformed her car.

This was a great show - learned loads! While I read about Tire Rack reviews, since they sell tires that are not really a third party reviewer, CR is. Will admit I was some one who commented on (enough power/torque?)the use of the FR-S for this kind of testing of performance tires, but as long as the same car that the data is normalized.
I agree that tires are one of those items on a car where you get what you paid for! You don't have to buy the most expensive tire, but a lot times, if you buy the cheap tires from an unknown brand instead of a known respected brand such as Michelin or Dunlop, the tire may not last long and you may compromise ride quality and handling.
The CR ratings are really helpful, but it would helpful to narrow tire choices by tire size. It seems like all the top tires don't come in my size 195/55r15.
Speaking of tire inflation, I would say that unless I stood on the technician, I have never left a tire shop with all four tires inflated to the correct pressure. The worst I have seen was 5 pounds difference between opposite corners. If you do not check your tire pressure yourself, you are likely never to get the performance out of your car that it is capable of, and you will be fighting the steering wheel endlessly. These guys are right, the biggest component to tire satisfaction is keeping the inflation pressures where it should be. The other thing I will tell you is that warranties, in my opinion, are a joke. You will always get the blame for bad tire wear, no mater what.
Would CR do more of the same kinds of shows looking at things that people buy for cars again? Thinking of brake pads, batteries and other consumables/upgrades.
Why are "summer" tires so damn expensive? I live in So Fl so I don't need or like all season radials, but these summer tires are out of my league and they wear out too quickly, we need So Fla and So Cali affordable one season tires.
I once went to a Les Schwab Tire store to get my tires rotated. The guy said they couldn't do it because the tires were too worn, but he was eager to give me an estimate on new ones. I said OK. Nothing to lose. He comes back about ten minutes later with four estimates -- all about the same price. I looked at the names of each tire brand. I had not heard of ANY of them in my life. I asked the guy where these tires were made. He said he didn't know. So we both went in back and pulled down one tire of each brand he wanted to sell me. Two were made in China, one in Korea, and one in Japan. I said I would NEVER buy any Asian tires. I did my research and went to the Goodyear store and got excellent, made in America, tires. It is sad that Americans are being suckered into buying junk, unsafe, foreign tires -- all just to save a few bucks. And shame on Les Schwab for pulling this scam on us. Always ask where tires are made when you purchase new ones. If they are not made in America -- DON'T BUT THEM.

Like the Nokian WGs. I think that they are coming down in price. Almost as good as a dedicated winter tire.
I'm so glad to be riding on aftermarket tires. The Dunlop tires on my 6spd corolla hatch were garbage.
I tell people I would rather be in a RWD car with winter tires then an AWD car with all seasons. I have nokian haka R2! Love them

Winter tires also grip better in dry cold weather...but I lost my car over a slide on ice using the top-grade ice tires in the third season
How do you test tires differently than TireRack?
I bought a $1.3k set of four and they eunjjing great. They do better in snow compare to stock. They run smooth and less noise inside.

Some upgrades improve one or two things on your car. But Tyre does three - acceleration, handling and braking.

So called summer tires are high performance ones, you can't get "normal" summer tires, they just don't make them for the US market.

Chinese tires are getting better, if you shop carefully, you can get a decent tire at a good price.
