I'm sorry but I am not buying this. People claim rust or X-frame or whatever but I have owned (and sadly wrecked), steel-bodied cars: 1970 Buick Skylark & 1972 Chevy Nova. I don't know how fast these two cars were supposed to be going, but they cut away from the overhead shot right at impact. There's no engine in this Impala. And that hood crumpled like aluminum foil.. a steel hood would not have done that. The passenger compartments may be safer in today's cars, but the outer body would withstand a lot more punishment before reaching the passenger compartment. So I still call bullshit.

I’m not exaggerating when I say I still don’t know how I came out unscathed besides burned up arms from the airbag from getting into a head on collision in my 94 gmc Sonoma against a Ram truck twice the size of mine, I do feel like older cars have materiel that newer ones don’t use anymore that could save your life, I could be wrong but that’s my opinion.

No matter how you slice this … paying for full self driving for a test car was a bad call / investment no matter if consumer reports paid now vs a year ago. Monthly subscription for FSD has been available for quite some time now. The only reason I see why they bought it like this is because after car has gone through testing and gets put up for sale, most likely the employees of consumer reports get first dibs with a sweet employee discount. And someone high up the the management wanted to get fully loaded Tesla but at half the price and didn’t want to pay himself full price for FSD they persuaded the acquisitions department to shell full amount for this test car

If only the decrease in crashes actually helped lower the cost of insurance. Instead it raises the price of the car and the insurance bc the insurance company now says if you get into an accident fixing it is so much more expensive. Let the market decide how much they value their safety, if its worth it to them they'll pay. Forcing manufactures to provide something people are unwilling to pay for is bad for everyone.

AWD is becoming standard in more and more cars these days. In my opinion, that’s not a good idea and the manufacturers should think twice. AWD should be optional with 2WD as standard. The reason is because while AWD automatically sends power to the wheels that need them the most and improves traction on unpaved or slippery surfaces, it also consumes more fuel since the engine has to work harder to drive all four wheels full-time. Because of this, the extra running costs may not be worth it for those who live where they (feel they) don’t need it.

  • @GreenTipple

Car companies in India don't trust these simulations. They use real people, in real cars, on real road who get into real accidents. Then they decide whether to change the design, or just blame the driver for some "extremely sensible reason".

Watch out with your somehow IGNORANT WORDS! “Life saving technology” you DID say? Depending on the quality of the hardware, and software, actual implementation, algorithms and testing done on this “saving” technology, FACT IS: it can and it DOES have put people at risk! Yes, yes, they continue to get better, but do acknowledge that it is NOT PERFECT! Plenty of reports, plus accidents created by the automatic breaking system when there was NOTHING dangerous or in front of the car!

How about rear collisions. I see lot of rear end collisions, personally had 2 while waiting at the red light. Many vehicles with 3rd row seems to have the seats pretty close to the rear hatch and almost have no rear bumper or rear bumper seems to stay flat with the rear hatch.
