Actually he was not in Yemen. He was in Aden which was a cosmopoliton and independent port and trade city under British control. It was like Hong Kong was before becoming part of Chna in 1999. Insurgency started in the 1960s and later it was overrun by the NLF and the British forces evacuated. It was no longer the commerce hotspot and cosmopoliton city and became a part of Yemen. Interestingly, Aden was under the Bombay Presidency till 1937 and was a part of British India. After 1937, it was administered as an independent colony.

People here are talking about Jio only, but no one seems to remember the revolution Reliance Communication brought in early 2000s. They were the reason we had basic mobiles in the hands of every person. At that time, you could see mobiles in the hands of a rickshaw puller. They were the reason for free incoming calls and cheap handsets. They gave phones for 499rs or $5.
Remember "Mera sapna sabka apna" campaign? We 90s kids got mobiles due to reliance only.

What Jio did in the Indian Telecom Sector is something unprecedented. India's 3 big incumbent carriers (Idea, Vodafone & Airtel) have reported losses consecutively for the last 8 financial quarters, forcing Idea & Vodafone to merge and also causing upto 15 other small carriers to exit the market completely.
The amount of planning that went into creating Jio, the upfront investment in the infrastructure, the launch of the service, it's marketing campaign and then it's broad spectrum effects on the Indian market deserve a video of their own. Fun facts: Gujarat, where Ambanis are from, has been an international trading hub for 5000 years. As part of the Indus Valley Civilization, they traded with Mesopotamia, and Egypt and possibly Crete, and had trading colonies all along the Persian gulf. The Indus site of Lothal and Dholavira had, like other major Indus sites, dedicated manufacturing facilities for the production of carnelian, shell, metal and wood goods. Back then it had the world's best dockyards and trade was the major source of income.
This area remained an important trading site throughout history (including with ancient Greece and Rome), and its people were reputed traders, bankers, landowners and businessmen (the Vaishya class of society), and still are to this day.

Most of the other mobile Telecom companies were generally a scam with their prices ,but honestly you could still get a decent broadband with good speeds.Even local ones. It's not like India was closed off from the internet before Jio. It's just cheaper now that allowed more new people to come in ,but we still had a big existing Internet base before that. It's just that Jio brought some much needed competition .

Vaibhavkumar Patil You obviously have no knowledge of the history of Alibaba. They received no help from the government even when Jack ma directly went to them. Alibaba thrived BECAUSE there isn't government intervention. State owned companies are all far more inefficient and less profitable than private ones. They won eBay and Amazon with zero help from the government. The government is always slow to react and e-commerce was a new thing back then. It is precisely because of the fact that there were little government imposed rules or restrictions that e-commerce thrived so hard in China.

TRINITRON TC I think you do not know anything about China. Contrary to popular believe, partnering with a Chinese company is only applicable to only a few industries, like the automobile industry. This is the exception rather than the norm although western media likes to single out the exceptions and portray it as the norm even though it isn't representative of the situation in China at all. eBay operated independently throughout its operation in China and Amazon has been operating in China since 2004, independently. Amazon is still operating independently in China today. Samsung, Microsoft, Apple, LinkedIn, LG, Starbucks, P&G, LV, Prada, Unilever, Nike, Adidas, New Balance and thousands of other companies are all in China without a Chinese partner.
