  • Is your EGR valve stuck! The spring at the top electronic part could be broken! This is how to take it apart and put it back together.
    This is in a response to a comment of how to assemble the electronic (top) part of an EGR valve for a Peugeot/Citroen 1.6HDi engines, probably will work for Volvo, Ford, Mini, Suzuki and Mazda 3.
    Do not open the top part if you do not need to, it may not be exactly the same as mine!
    A more updated video showing taking apart the EGR valve and cleaning everything is here: • The complete guide to ...
    The electronic (top) part on the newer version has a slightly different design.

    Another excellent video. Telling us what not to do is just as important as telling us what we can do. I learnt what not to do the hard way, as always. Dare say my egr would be working now if I knew the correct way to put it back together. I did get it back together, just never sure it was right. Also good you showed us how much tension there was on that spring.
    Many thanks, much appreciated.

    Hi again... yesterday I finally took apart the EGR valve. Well, first of all I did it three years ago while the car (Peugeot 207 1.6 hdi 90 hp) was 267.000 kms, at that time I cleaned the mecanical part of rhe EGR and I changed the electrical part because it was stuck. I had the chance and swaped the elctrical part from a second hand citroen c2 1.4 hdi which fit perfect despite of having a diferent reference. The mecanical part seems to be the same in both models but it is not, only the electrical is the same.
    Yesterday I took it apart again 67.000 kms after, because the fault code P1461 was showing up in the Lexia regarding to the electrical part of the EGR intermitent stucking. I also have to say that the car runed fine and no engine light was on in the dash.
    Once I opened the EGR I saw not so much black powder ( carbon) and after cleaining it up again, the electrical part keept getting kind of stuck not retorning as it should. Thanks to your video I opened and blow some dust out and reinstalled as you show as (thanks for that!) but it improved just a little bit 😞. So I decided finally to purchase a completly new EGR. I think I will get the Valeo one, after all it worked fine 267.000 kms the first time 😀😃. Thanks mate!

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  Před 2 lety

      Thank you Marcus for the good words and story write up. Unfortunately, you may have to replace it. Eventually it comes to a point where one needs to replace the EGR. I have not tried Valleo as it was too expensive or I could not find Valleo. When I was replacing mine, I bought Haas and that one was not machined properly and was sticking as brand new. The channel inside where the pin rotates was not smooth enough and was purely sticking from the mechanical rotation.
      I then searched quite a bit for a good EGR and Hella are OEM manufacturer for quite a few companies. I bought their Peugeot/Citroen EGR and have not had problems with it for the past 2-3 years now.
      If you cannot find a Valleo one and/or it is too expensive see I would not shy away from Hella. You also need to recalibrate the new EGR with Diagbox/PP2000. All the best and good luck. 267k km is pretty decent.

    I took mine apart last week, as it was jamming, even after a good clean. The inside of mine was slightly different even though it was on a 1.6hdi. Peugeot 407 2006.
    There were two plastic parts: a cover and an inside bit that rotates (on this one it seems that the cover rotates). The inside bit on mine (that rotates) was missing a few bit of plastic that hold it in place, and the spring was all jammed up behind it and bent out of shape.
    I'm pretty certain that the previous owner (previous owners do some weird shit!) had taken it apart and botched it when he put it back together. There was even a screw missing from the outside.
    I just blanked the EGR instead, as the car was pretty much undrivable, and I took out the spring and plastic bits. My hope was that the EGR would think that it's able to rotate freely, but I'm still getting errors on the dashboard. Probably some kind of feedback resistance or something.
    Maybe I just have to clear the errors, or maybe they'll go away after a while.
    Else I'll just reflash the ecu. Or maybe try some delicate plastic welding on it if I'm feeling adventurous..

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  Před 5 lety

      Hi Joe, I agree, previous owners do some weird stuff. Sometimes, depending on the model, the ECU will throw an error if the EGR is blocked and the error will be persistent. See if you can clear the error codes, but it will most likely reappear.

    • @JoeBob79569
      @JoeBob79569 Před 5 lety

      @@moremolecules Yea, it reappeared alright. Two of them. And it's now in limp mode too! I think I'll have another go at fixing the spring and the plastic bits, and failing that I'll just reflash the ECU with the EGR warnings turned off. Think I'll still keep it blanked off though..

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  Před 5 lety

      @@JoeBob79569 Not too sure that the limp mode will disappear with the EGR blocked, even if you have fixed the spring/plastic bits. I have not seen it done, but if nothing works and you want to keep the EGR blocked, you can try to re-learn the EGR with diagbox/PP2000. As if it is a replacement EGR valve.

      The easiest way is to connect to diagnostic software (PP2000/Lexia for HDi) and check if it is operational, e.g. mechanical and electronic part. Also, with the said software you can monitor the valve position and percent opening during engine operation. This should be a sure way to check performance

    I just removed the EGR valve, is not that bad inside of it, just black smoke, but I can not remove, not the electronic top part, but the one that connects with the EGR body, you shown in the other video. I removed the three bolts and when I twist it is holding something, I think the valve is closed, must be opened, how? Thanks

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  Před 6 lety

      The piston valve is kind of independent of the top part (not the very top electronic). Twisting should separate it, I think counterclockwise. Try to wiggle it out, there might be some carbon build up that is holding it, but that would be quite surprising. Do you mean the valve or the middle part is closed and not opened. The valve will be operated electronically to close/open whenever needed by the ECU

    • @emy7990
      @emy7990 Před 6 lety

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  Před 6 lety

      I assume you have the 1.6HDi or an EGR valve is the same/similar? There is not anything inside that holds it, only the three bolts hold the plastic part. Even simple lift without twisting should release it.

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  Před 6 lety

      No worries and well done. You have to be careful with the positioning of the seal when putting it back, it sometimes twists and it has to be flush with no twists.

      Depends on what is wrong with the EGR valve. If it is just hydrocarbon build up, then cleaning will work. It is worth trying cleaning it due to the cost of purchasing another one. I previously bought a HAAS EGR valve and this thing broke within 8 months. This is the spare in the video. I think there was some sort of manufacturer fault, as the pin was catching in the groove. I could have filed it, but could not be bothered. Bought a HELLA EGR valve and that has been great, no problems at all. It seems that the HELLA is a preferred choice for a lot of manufacturers. If possible I would buy HELLA EGR valve. Yes, price varies quite a bit. I think I bought mine for 130 (GBP). Good luck!
