she starts off the album with a cocky "i am the bad guy" tone and ended the album with "i am the bad guy" in the saddest tone
Very reminiscent of the black parade. There are repeated lyric lines throughout the songs, it feels like it has a strong thematic link, and I think that last song taking a line from each song to tell a story was brilliant.
I haven’t been this interested in a mainstream “pop” (I say that extremely lightly and more due to exposure instead of her music) musician since....man I don’t know when.
She’s someone I’ll be thrilled to continue to listen to new material. I just hope COVID doesn’t ruin music. Touring is the only way artists make money

Finneas’ production with Billie’s breath control/harmonizing make for one insanely talented team. I feel like they should never work apart. I know they will, and I know there are so many talented producers out there for her to work with, but Finneas’ sound is just so incredible and can fit her many different genres. This album is just such a masterpiece, and I’m someone with a very heavy musical background (theory/production/piano/drums) and analyzing a pseudo-pop album like this that isn’t overproduced is so refreshing. His Grammy is well deserved, I think he’s one of the most talented producers in the game, and both of them have an insanely bright and prosperous future.

Also, if you're surprised by her vocal capabilities, listen to her EP "don't smile at me". The ballad idontwannabeyouanymore has great vocal range.
"Listen Before I Go" get's me every. single. time. I'm a sucker for music that can make you feel something so deeply and this is one of my faves. The sirens in the end ruined me.
For me the ruining moment is the sound before the scream - sound of body flying through the air ending with the heavy and yet silent fall to the ground. This song is masterpiece in every direction - lyricaly, musicaly, emotionaly, semanticaly.
I don’t know if you do Music Video reactions but you should react to her videos for the songs she has in this album. She has Bad Guy, You Should See me in a crown, When the party’s over and Bury a Friend. They’re all so creative and amazing.

Not all of her fan base is young ;) 52 here and love this kid. Would also recommend going to a concert if you get a chance. It’s one of the best I have ever been too. The energy is surprising.

“Listen Before I Go” I mean that song always brings me back to a place where I was in that was not healthy. I cry, I yell out the words, and I finally breathe this song.
Love your reactions. I am quite a bit older than you and absolutely LOVE Billie. Thank you for reminding people to listen to albums in order of the playlist. She actually said that your first listen to this one should be done that way. I view it as a narrative on a relationship. You get the frantic, yet sometimes creepy, happiness from Bad Guy then as the songs continue you get the ups and downs that come with every relationship and wind up at When the Party Over which a lot of people view as a song about a toxic relationship that is starting to take over (watch the video - the toxicity is conceptualized in an interesting way) and finally you get towards the end of the relationship and the sadness that comes with saying I Love you but need to say goodbye. Only to rewind and do it all again. I don't think a day has gone by since I started listening to her that I haven't played a song or two, whatever fits my mood at the time. I would suggest listening to her EP Don't Smile at Me, Her single When I Was Older (this is a BEAUTIFUL song)and her cover of End of the World by Rob Dickinson. btw She and her brother write all the songs, she sings them in his bedroom as he mixing them and he produces them all. Such a talented duo that I didn't know I needed .

Billie and her brother Finneas are way beyond their years. This album is so deep and a brilliant story of what we all have gone through and have felt, but can rarely express so thought provokingly as this.

Is not about "friends with benefits" as you misread the lyrics. It refers to couples who break up but console each other that they will stay as friends. She's telling him that it's okay if he broke up, they can remain as friends. But he's not leaving, and she's unable to leave. She's resigned to this unhappy relationship even if it consumes her. Sometimes there is nothing better. This is the tragedy of the human condition.

That's why we humans commiserate over songs, poems, and myths so as to be relieved of those emotions. That's why tragic plays, going back to the ancient Greeks, are so central to coping with negative thoughts. Not every unwanted emotion calls for a colorful pill like xanny.
Recommendation: If you really want to dig further, I'd recommend her EP, don't smile at me. If you listen in order you may notice two of the tracks are the flip side of the same problem.
Avocado Pirate I thought “call me friend, but keep me closer” was in reference to ‘keep your friends close but enemies closer’ saying....but yours makes sense in the context
When the album first came out it was 12 am and I wasn’t ready to hear listen before I go, but when she said “I’m not okay I feel so scattered” my heart was broken and I instantly started balling my eyes out because her voice sounded like she was genuinely sad when she was saying that it sounded like she was asking for help and it shattered my heart 😭❤️

*Major* props to you on your views on the line in "Bad Guy", "might seduce your dad type" for a few reasons. You not only recognized the double standard where a teenage *boy* singing a line like that would be no big deal, but you also respected that it's a line *Billie herself* wrote and wanted to put in the song. Along with that, you openly stated that it would bother you--like any responsible adult--if that line (or any other over-sexualized line) was forced on Billie (or any other teenager) via somebody else's writing.
Seriously, major respect, hon.

It’s so interesting to me that you mentioned the album about insomnia. I initially thought you were talking about Billie’s album because a bird distracted me for some seconds and had to rewind to realise you were talking about a different album! It seems to me that the story of this entire album is that place, the answer to the question: when we all fall asleep, where do we go? It starts off with the a faster tempo a little “all over the place” the way when one is trying to fall asleep but the mind is still racing. Then comes that soothing velvety sound of actually falling asleep. Then the album sounds like a series of nightmares, which can switch up in tempo based on R.E.M. sleep or deep sleep... and then towards the end of sleeping, the songs get slower and sadder, almost like that stretchy achy time just before awakening which for people who suffer from sleep paralysis and nightmares is basically the worst part of being asleep (it’s like a reverse of the velvety moment of falling asleep), and then the very last song would be that blurry moment of waking up and one by one going back through the memories of that place one just came out of: the album we go to when we fall asleep. At least that’s what I think.

Billie and Finneas were exposed to many genres, growing up. Sinatra, Beatles, My Chemical Romance, Green Day, Avril Lavigne, R&B, show tunes, etc. That's why their songs are so eclectic. Add to that Finneas' true musical genius as a producer/performer...and you get Billie Eilish!
I love your reaction review, very contemplative. I certainly went through a similar feeling of finally understanding who Billie is as an artist. Not at all what bad guy made me assume. This is my favorite album I've heard in several years. She and Finneas deserved every Grammy they won. I can't wait to see what they do next. I'm almost positive No Time To Die will be nominated for the Oscar for Best Original Song and I wouldn't be surprised if it won.

It is incredible. And made even more so in it’s lyrics and honest delivery of emotions ( especially from such a young person) and harmonies with Finneas . Plus the fact that it’s all Billie and Finneas. Written,produced and recorded in his bedroom in their home. No studio over production.

Her songs don’t come from life experience. It is storytelling and riffing with her brother. That’s why they seem overly sexual or violent in some. It’s all play.
It's mixed. The relationship related and personal songs are from both their experience, Bad Guy and Bellyache were more based on "characters" they created. Billie has stated multiple times that even young people can feel strong and great emotions and experience love, etc.
Listen Before I Go, I Love You, Goodbye. The last three tracks she purposefully put in order to sound like a sentence. Just to bullet point your point of listening to an album in order.

plus all of them are the first lines from each song (except it's the hooks instead for bad guy and all the good girls go to hell) and it's amazing to me how she could plan that and have each line fit into a sort of story in reverse order

“i love you” is about Billie loving someone and she told them and they loved her back, and she said in an interview “love is the scariest feeling in the world.” So this is about her being scared that they love each other, and she says in the song “maybe won’t you take it back?”

Billie had night terrors and made this album about it. She's said that she's not going to explain her thoughts on the storyline of the album because she wants people to interpret it in their own way. The way that i see it is that the songs represent her dreams. The beginning is almost like those normal dreams and then you slowly go into a deeper sleep the middle of the album is what i think is when you get to the nightmare stage and as you go on you leave that stage and begin to wake up and "goodbye" seems like you're about to wake up and there's birds chirping and things. Idk that's just the way that i've always thought of it.
