Can't imagine how tough it must have been wrestling with that beast for such long periods of time. After the final stint in 1991, they had to lift Johnny out of the car and carry him to an ambulance, he was so exhausted. Good to see he finally got to stand on the podium! :)

@@Lanse1984 yeah Mercedes said the same thing about the M119 engine after 1989, and subsequently published dynamometer charts with the SAE..... to prove it was actually making more power AFTER it won the race...as far as 1000HP, thats excessive, id say 900 or so at 10,000RPM was more likely..... Of course, every race engine IN THEORY can always make more power..... thats the entire point of a competition engine, simply to make as much power as possible before the engine disintegrates....

    • @kyongslist

Most people arent aware of the fact that Mazda had been lobbying heavily to the ACO in the years preceding 1991, and as a result (in the last year that group 2 engines such as the Merc V8 and Jag V12 would be allowed before the mandatory 3.5L formula would be implemented), they were granted the privelege of being able to retain the minimum kerb weight proscribed to them the previous year. Thus, every one of the 787B Group 2 competitors were running at 1000KG, while Mazda running at 825KG. HUGE difference... not only helps with speed but literally everything. Fuel, durability, etc.

What is not to like about Johnny Herbert? By chance, I was there at three of his career defining race meetings; his Brands Hatch F3000 crash in 1988, his Le Mans win in 1999 and his first F1 win at Silverstone in 1995. I just missed his FFord festival win in 1985 to get a full house!
He may be older, greyer and carrying a bit more weight but he still retains the impish enthusiasm of a young Essex boy to this day 😃

Those of you stating that this car only won Le Mans because the first 5 cars in class retired may be correct however do not forget the old saying, to finish first, first you have to finish! Any combination of vehicle and driver that wins Le Man's deserves the utmost respect.

This is just a flat out lie.
The GTsport version literally sounds worse than one they made 10 years ago.
Gt4 has more thumpy gearchanges, slower gearchanges (which makes perfect sense since this isn't a sequential like the noise in GTsport suggests, this is a manual, with a clutch to operate.), And at 10k rpm, in GTsport, it doesn't scream as much as in gt4. The gt4 version sounds arrhythmic, heavy and powerful. GTsport has garbage noise, particularly in the 787b.
Good thing they added an option to turn down gearbox noise.

This car and Johnny burned a hole in racing history. I don't have a lot of respect for the FIA. This is racing, you don't throttle it back and you don't control it you get out of the goddamned way and let people do their thing. This is the ultimate racing machine this rotary engine is just an amazing invention. This naturally aspirated 2.6 l engine blows Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar and Porsche into the weeds. This is its real purpose, it's real purpose is to race. It's better adapted even though they don't last as long as reciprocating engines but when you're in extreme environments like racing at Le mans, they actually do better. It's a matter of shedding the heat, they generate a lot of heat. Johnny at the end. They didn't have to haul him away this time, he could actually stand on the podium. This is one of the most epic race stories ever.
