- Whenever group C sports car racing is talked about, the image is that of insanity, distilled down and blown up in hundreds of cylinders across dozens of cars as they fought for some of the greatest accolades in motorsport. And while group C may not have always been quite so ridiculous, our subject today certainly was. So fast was this machine, that the most famous motor racing track in the world was changed to ensure it could never happen again. This is the story of the Sauber-Mercedes C9.

Man the 80s were just the peak of racing. Massive turbos in F1, Group B in WRC, and Group C.
There were many 'peaks' in motorsports......... The Can Am series in the 60/70s was the craziest league of all time..... Group 5 in the 70s with the 935k3, Zak speed capris, CSLs etc were the wildest GT cars of all time... Sports prototype with Porsche 917k was the Greatest if all time.. GT1 gave us the craziest homologation Cars while giving us some of the best action in the sport... BTW you forgot to mention 1980s group A touring car ... Peak of touring car especially in the DTM series...... Some of the best dog fights in the sport ever recorded......
At least we were lucky enough to see those monsters back in the day, the Can -Am cars were just off the chain.

Fun fact: The "C" in the name of Saubers cars has nothing to do with group "C" those cars were racing in, but is the first letter of Peter Saubers wife Christiane. A tradition that Sauber started with his first designed racing car chassis and even though Peter Sauber stepped back in 2016, this tradition is still going and today Alfa Romeo - Sauber races the C42 in F1 with the helm. I truly hope that the Sauber team/brand will be going strong and successfull in the future and that the partnership with Audi will boost their performance in F1 as they are already helping Audi on their aerodynamics for their e.g. LeMans racing cars.
I'll give the man credit, throughout the group C days, he was designing and building his own cars with a Mercedes power plant. Fast and great looking cars, but nobody could stop the Porsches whether they were works Porsches, or if the factory skipped on other seasons. Peter Sauber was in there doing his thing.
Other fun fact: that 840 HP was in race trim. For qualifying they could dial it up to between 1400 and 1500 HP.

I was also there and confirm the Sauber Mercedes were the best sounding cars on track. However, the Aston Martin were so loud I could still hear them on Monday afternoon!

It's interesting that you say you could still hear them on Monday because when we were driving back we kept hearing Le Mans cars in our heads lol and were constantly checking the mirrors of our car. And It took a couple of days to get rid of them. We've been to Le Mans 17 times since, but 1989 was the best year by far because of all the different cars and engine sounds.. (And it wasn't crowded back then)........"Great memories!"
@@saymyname218 In 1989 my brother and his mate and I found a spot just beyond the 'S' and it was on a small hill - so we could sit down in the shade and enjoy a beer and watch the action. I was there on my own overnight and was in the stands over the old pits for a while then in the stands opposite the pits and also on the walk up to the chicane.
I think the Aston Martins were so loud. The Mercedes sounded better to me - the 'burble' of the engine.
I went back in 1996 and this time camped on the outside of the track (Camping Blue I believe). Nightmare conditions - in the sun/heat for days. To cap it all I had taken Friday(?) off and gone up to Normandy to have a look around. I stayed in a cheap hotel for a decent night sleep and left for the track when it was still dark. I could not open the liftback for some reason but managed to get my gear into the car anyway. It turns out someone had tried to use a screwdriver to break the lock. Fortunately, my brother's wife's father was there and he able to remove the lock but still let me open the liftback and close it. I was feeling poorly for the race and, probably only saw 6 hours or so. I do reclal there was an American open cockpit machine there that sounded great.

They used to make top quality stuff, I got a KWh wall meter from AEG made in 1972 and it still works flawlessly. Sad thing the original AEG went under in 1996.

I did not believe the speed record of 248mph. So I looked it up. That is insanity, holy hell.

I was at Le Mans in 1989 and was awake for 22 of the 24 hours sleeping from around 10am to noon (in a tent on the inside of the track). I can confirm that the Sauber Mercedes were the best sounding cars out there. Mind you I could still hear the Aston Martin on Monday afternoon.
A lot of fanboys always brag about the Mazda 787B being "too good" but it was actually rubbish in race pace, having the next best result as 5th. When Group C dominance is discussed, only two cars come to mind. Sauber-Mercedes C9 and TWR-Jaguar XJR9.

Awesome channel, you cannot imagine how fond I am of seeing some of these cars that filled my GT3 and GT4 garages. As an idea for a video why not do a mini-documentary on the appearance of wings and spoilers in race cars. I remember reading that the origin of the rear wing was actually to keep exhaust gases from reaching the driver and it ended up benefiting the car aerodynamically.
I have never heard that! I'm sceptical, but I'll look into it. Could be an interesting subject regardless though so thank you for the suggestion!

These cars were beautiful!
So many cars have forced changes in regulations, because they were so much better than the competition. The earliest I can remember, are the Ford GTs with the 427, then the STP turbines at INDY, the Dodge and Plymouth winged stock cars, the Porsche 917's, the Chaparral 'vacuum' car, the six wheel F1 car, the F1 vacuum car, the list just goes on and on, all to slow down, or stop a particular maker from completely dominating a class. Oh, I forgot the Williams active suspension F1 car!
That Chaparral never won a race.

That could have been the king of speed had the Chicanes not been installed at Le Mans but its understandable why that happened.
As a Mercedes owner I can tell you they don't mess around with their engines.
They know horsepower. And man that was the glory days of pure speed.
But also safety was not what it is today though which is also why we don't see monsters like that on the track anymore.

Mate, 1700cc rally cars were making this kind of power in the 80s.
1600cc F1 cars made double that.
But yes, a 5L Merc, being out dragged by a hot hatch, knows what power is...

@@LeonKotze70 If 1700cc rally cars could last 24 hours that would be amazing, but they changed turbos like babies changed diapers, besides the fact that the Mercedes never ran with more than 2.2 bars of boost, so it could never make that much power to begin with. So ye they knew what they were doing.
Finishing is the most important part in any endurance race, so thankfully you're nowhere near qualified enough to stay near these engines, let alone build them.

@@exiles299 It wasn't particularly unreliable. It had a rock-solid proven V8 platform and innovative body design ideas, it finished 6th in the Championship that year I think. The thing that sunk them was that Ford, their parent company, decided to put all their money and effort behind Jaguar rather than Aston Martin.
got to see the jag xjr 9 in person a few weeks ago at beaulieu motor museum absolutely beautiful car and a serious feat of engineering
Ohhh, so this le mans car explains the lore on why GT4 has both the chicane version and no chincane version of Le Mans. Also this car being a reward for beating the longest and hardest championship in GT4 aka the Formula Chaimpionship makes more sense now, it was a historical beast for Le mans and Mercedes-benz itself.
TheCraziestGamer, i got one added note. The Sauber C9 is also Ayumu Uehara (Pomu)'s main favourite car. Even her closest friend, Shioriko Mifune also love that Sauber C9.

I remember at the time, from prior to the 1989 race the ACO were in the middle of the track renewal process and Balestre the top bloke at the FIA promised them the straight would remain if they built the new pitlane and accepted the new 3.5 rules and shorter race format. Because this wasn't accepted at the time and the 89 race went ahead as normal and they lost the FIA status. The FIA subsequently forced through the rule limiting circuits to the maximum straight length which was not rescinded when the ACO accepted the new formula. It's the same as saying the 787B was banned for being too fast when the rule had already been made beforehand and the car was no longer eligible the next year before it won. In effect the Merc had no involvement in the changes, just Bernie.
When I die and go to heaven, I want to spend my afterlife racing a Porsche 917K and a 962 at LeMans, screaming down the Mulsanne flat out at night….
Merc had involvement - they specifically did the opposite of every other team/OEM. They sided fully with JBM/Bernie/Max Mosley, complied with their requests not to go to Le Mans in 1990 because the FIA had removed it from the calendar because of sudden 'safety concerns' all at a time that FIA was fighting directly with ACO over broadcasting rights and wrestling control of the core idea of endurance racing. Ideas like shifting all non-Le Mans races to 2.5 hours was heavily pitched. Removing pit access to fans, creating a mini-F1 atmosphere. Among internal committees they did not question policy changes like Porsche, Jaguar and Mazda did, they knew who paid the bills so-to-speak.
So instead of sticking around like Porsche, Jaguar, Mazda, and other major OEM's as a show of support for Le Mans, Mercedes withdrew from the event. They simply returned a year later after chicanes were added and then immediately jumped to F1 and abandoned sportscar racing for 4 years. I'd much rather hear how the XJR-12 or the 962 made Le Mans too fast than the C9.. The car that reminds me of Toyota's struggles to win Le Mans back in the 80s.
The 787B was never ‘too fast’.
By the way the Mulsanne/FIA/Ecclestone conspiracy has virtually nothing going for it. The fact was that the impetus came from the drivers and the ACO agreed to do something. At that time the FIA was the FISA and Balestre and Ecclestone hated each other’s guts. The idea that they would have colluded to bring down Group C is absurd.

The manufacturers abandoned Group C for F1 for two main reasons: first of all, there were more races in F1 and far greater sponsorship opportunities and secondly, Group C cost about as much as F1 anyway. The team owners looked at what Eddie Jordan was achieving on a shoestring budget and decided they could do the same.

This car is the equivalent of aliens coming to Earth with their advanced technology to complete in the 1989 24hrs of Le Mans. Beating everyone with their flying saucer on wheels, then leaving never to be seen again… That’s obvious NOT what happened, but the Sauber C9 has that mystique & iconic look about it!!
Plus it's silver I think it's an homage to the old mercs without a paint that were called "Silver Arrows"

I was born in Sweden,1988, so could never see these in real life. But did you travel around the world and saw the Japan Sports Prototype Championship and the Mimolta 88C-V? The Nissan r89cp, R92cp, 787b, Toyota GT-1 or European endurance with Jaguar XJR9 or Porsche 962?
Ive been a Porsche die hard ever since childhood, as far as I was concerned the 908 and 917 were the closest thing to exotic mythological creatures. There were other beauties that cast a lifelong spell on me like the Ferrari P4, 312P prototypes, and the Lola T-70. But when the Sauber Mercedes C9 showed up and blew away the competition in 1989 the simple industrial beauty of the car blew me away too 🙏🏾
You should do a video on the 1994 Dauer 962C: a Group C car turned into a quasi-GT1.

That Dauer 962 was a street legal road car not a full out racing Group C prototype.
@@ernestogasulla7763 Yeah I was going to say the same thing, that the Dauer 962 led to the GT1 catagory. Though I am surprised to hear you don't like the GT1 class era. Most people say they love this era and state that it was the last truely creative sports car prototype era. I am aware that after the Mclaren F1 won Le Mans in 1995, Porsche decided to make a race car and then make 100 or so examples of a road car version for their GT1 sports prototype. That flew in the face of Mclaren because it had won Le Man taking the road version of the F1 and making a race version the F1 GTR which at the time was faster then the prototypes.

Jochen Mass, Manuel Reuter, and Stanley Dickens were the winners of the 1989 Le Mans 24hrs. Car #63. And that same Sauber C9 was later put into the most popular game from Playstation. Gran Turismo 4.

The music brings me back to highschool when I used to play GT marathons to get all the cars. I was able to see the tracks when I slept, in class, or even closed my eyes. It was weird that I was able to fall into an unconscious sleep state and still win races.

You mean the two infamous chicanes - they may or may not have made Le Mans safer (even that's debatable - there have been crashes directly attributable to the chicanes, often caused by damage or debris, that wouldn't have happened otherwise) but they wrecked the circuit's unique character. Those who remember it before then will know what I mean, those who don't might not, but it's just not the same.
Yes, it was kuntz who put chicanes on the Mulsanne, they ruin everything Kyle, And that's why we can't have nice things. Talk to the top fuel dragster drivers, they aren't afraid of going over 350 mph, but now we don't race on quarter mile drag strips any more, kuntz - Kyle, that's why we can't have nice things.... There was a time when a man had a 962 & he could hold it full throttle all the way down, the Mulsanne & that was racing and it was good. I/we didn't really care about the mph or kph, you could tell us what it was later, or not. What it was - it was great, close racing at ludicrous speed & the fans were happy indeed - it was a NICE thing, that group C then. Yes I remember, it was just a couple of years after Rondo had won in his own car, that too was a nice thing!

The chicanes were put there because the drivers, led by Jean-Louis Schlesser (you probably don’t know who he is), campaigned for years to have them put in because they didn’t like having to races at night or in the rain with differences of up to 100 km/h between the fastest and slowest cars.
Ninety percent on the comments here are from people who don’t even know what the Group C rules were.
Please give examples of crashes caused by the chicanes. Then give me an example of a fatal crash caused by the chicanes.
@@thethirdman225 Of, course I know who Jean-Louis Schlesser is, the man was himself a moving chicane that Nigel Mansell almost wrecked avoiding him. If you're only fast enough to be in one grand prix, if you almost take out the leader -- people will remember you! His uncle of course died horribly in that magnesium Honda, that John Surtees took a hard pass on that car. And since they couldn't put that fire out they just kept the race running. He went by Jo Schlesser. BTW -I'm 62 and know all this shit without googling it. But speaking of magnesium cars, we have to go back to 1955 where the worst wreck in racing history took place...Where was it he asks? Was it in front of the pits - or was it on the chicane free Mulsanne Straight? I wasn't alive for that but having read several books on that accident and some on Mike Hawthorn, I'd put the number of people killed closer to 100, no one knows for sure. And all this for saying I probably didn't know who Jean-Louis Schlesser is... go figger
@@GregBrownsWorldORacing This is all irrelevant. You don’t like his point of view so let’s attack the man himself. Really convincing argument, that. Schlesser was World Sportscar Champion in 1989 and 1990. He has cred. Martin Brundle found the Saubers particularly hard to stay with when Schlesser or Mauro Baldi were driving. He was also far from alone in his protests because you might have noticed that he was the leader of the (vast majority of) drivers who wanted the straight broken up, not a lone voice. Whether or not he was a “mobile chicane” in F1 has no bearing on the 5.8 km straight at Le Mans. Going fast in a straight line doesn’t even require talent!
And what does an unbroken 5.8 km straight contribute to racing? Almost nothing. Spectators aren’t allowed on those really fast sections so what’s the point apart from bigly numbers?
And what about these mysterious crashes supposedly caused by the chicanes? Christ on a bike, does anybody seriously think that’s a valid argument, especially when there have been _zero_ examples provided?
And in 1955 there was a straight run from Maison Blanche to the Dunlop Curve. The bit in front of the pits was very fast. I’m not surprised 80-odd people were killed. (By the way, try finding Pierre Levegh’s grave… LOL! I did.)
As for Group C, again almost nobody who comments here knows how it worked. I’d bet 90% of the comments here are from people who think it was an unlimited formula and it was stopped by the greenies or something. When in doubt, blame political correctness or the safety safety Sallys. Anything but the truth…

The cars' history doesn't end in 1989, though. The team did end up using it in the first round of the 1990 WSC in Suzuka. They finished 1st and 2nd ending the career of the C9 on a high note before it was replaced by the C11 thereafter.

My suggestion for future videos would be including Metric system too, for example saying "200mph or 320kmph". It would help understanding the contest better for people like me who doesn't use the other system😅

Agreed Simoptics, but the conversion is pretty simple. 1 mph = 1.6 kmh, 10 mph = 16 kmh, 100 mph = 160, 200 mph = 320 kmh

There's one other V8 powered beast we're forgetting: the Panoz LMP Roadster! A front engined beast that never won Le Mans but made it's presence known! 😃

M119 engine - you can find the road version in breakers for peanuts and they are ace. After Le Mans they Dyno’d the engines and they 1-made more power than when they started 2- components measured within tolerances.

Great videos of the 956/962 until the last 2 minutes. Thats clear reflection on who was dominate in Group C. Porsche focusing on other challenges opened the door for Sauber.

Great production? Really? Shows the AEG livery when talking about the Kouros car. Talks about “800 hp” but conveniently fails to mention that it was only doing that in qualifying. Talks about 820 and still fails to mention it. Doesn’t talk about the car’s real strength in relation to what Group C was and goes down that silly rabbit hole of top speed. The C9 was a fantastic car but it’s achievements are in its race wins, not it’s top speed.

The late 60s to the last 90s were as just the greatest 30 years in gt racing imo, group 5, group c, gt1 just to name a few were always so action packed consistently I’m only 17 an I go back to watch races every other day an just to see how fun it was to watch compared to now is crazy

Thanks for the video. But l would like to make a suggestion, when talking about motorsport add some off the sounds of these engine types(No Music). Group C was my era and that amazing sound of the Mercedes V8's was incredible.
