InRange is supported by viewers like you: / inrangetv The PSA Jakl seems to be a controversial product, and we have purchased one to review. That said, let's start with an InRange standard - the mud test.
I’m actually glad we got a sample via a purchase vs. PSA sending it. This is less vetted over and more likely to see what a random example of what they would send.
Go watch Focustripp's video on the Jakl. His had an out of specc pic rail and it was significantly out of specc such that he couldn't mount any conventional optics and when he made a video about it PSA ended their partnership with him. Just food for thought.
@@InrangeTv wonder if it's because your habits of being open about DEI and talking about history as related to guns. I like your content, maybe they're not keen on more open mined/ forward thinking channels getting T&E items.
@@rhubarbpie2027 They don't seem to like channels pointing out their allegedly out-of-spec 1913 rail... as happened the other week on the FocusTripp channel.
Go watch Focustripp's video on the PSA Jakl. His had an out of specc pic rail which he proved with pin gauges and it was significantly out of specc preventing the mounting of conventional optics. Then when he posted the video showing the situation PSA ended his partnership.
But really what did you expect? Focustripp is a relatively small content creator who was condescending in his video about it lambasting PSA. Should the pic rail been out of spec? Of course not. But he put a high precision mount with recoil lugs intended for a precision weapon on effectively an aluminum AK and expected something more than he got. Should the pic rail have been out of spec? Of course not. Were his expectations from a proprietary gun at that price point misplaced? I think so. Was his approach poor, most likely but I think he did it for clicks and drama and the obvious reaction from PSA gave him more I mean if that’s the worst thing about the Jakl, there are worse things to have issues with.
Oh no! PSA once again proves they make well designed guns. If you look at the JMac videos conducting burn downs with the OSA AK47 GEN 5 E it out performed every military AK they tested it against to include Russian ALs by thousands of round over what those various companies could do. Just because a company offers budget doesn’t mean they are crap. Let this be a reminder of that. I’m not saying a cheap AR with cheap parts is going to perform like a Daniel Defense or Midwest Indiatries AR but PSA offers quality weapons as well. And here you go, a well designed weapon that continues to improve based on customer feedback! Cheers
I am impressed,...and relieved. I bought a JAKL pistol upper in .300blk because I wanted a folding brace little quiet beast. I wasn't necessarily looking for an item that would beat the mud test. But it is AWESOME that it does. Now I have much more confidence in my choice and like it much more.
its a gun that has flair. is reliable. recoil impulse is good. looks good. has the g36 ak magic in an ar platform. for all the gun nuts complaining about issues, as someone who legally isnt allowed but can admire, i really think this is a protagonist gun.
Seems like so many people are hating on the JAKL. I was expecting it to fail based on all the negative comments I see. Looking forward to seeing more. 😮
First time being within an hour on InRange! Might I request a mud test of the Perun X16? It is an interesting rifle and I suspect it will do well, but who knows until it's covered in mud.
2:27 this feels like a non sequitur. firstly, I think most guns you have passed on this series have been short-stroke pistons. I think you could say that many/most long-stroke/AK platforms you've tested have failed. But more importantly I think the fundamental stress point on the AK is the dustcover-receiver construction vs receiver-receiver or upper-lower. As an upper-lower gun, I don't see what the long-stroke piston would have to do with the mudtest, except that with all that added momentum, it might theoretically have an advantage in reliable cycling (this is why Eugene Stoner did *not* gameify the AR15 bolt to be as light as possible).
I just finished an article that was bound for Recoil Offgrid but may be hold. I’ve been quite pleased with this platform and the long stroke gas system is a an intelligent move.
I think the G36/SCAR style bolt group is just very reliable in general, with its well sealed up internals but also very high bolt carrier to bolt mass ratio which also likely contributes to its ability to slam the bolt back into battery even with dirt on it just by having a much bigger momentum. So I'm really not surprised at all this passed the test
Can you talk a little bit more about the recoil impulse? How comparable is it to, say, something like a well-gassed carbine length AR-15? I love the aesthetics of this rifle but I doubt I'd be able to get my hands on it anytime soon haha
PSA’s politics and QC aside at least they can put there concept rifles into retail spaces and not charge 2500$ for an AR18 derivative. Bushmaster’s 2010 world changing rifle… remember that.
@@InrangeTv I really want for no rifles currently, but if they can get qc to be leviathan spec, I'd be interested in this. Legendary mud tests are appreciated.

Yeah I don't understand that. Did he mean to say something else? The G36 is short stroke, and the Jakl is long stroke. It's not like Karl doesn't know this, he literally owns/owned a G36 from Tommybuilt.
There should be a mud test round 2 where it's buried in the goop for several minutes/hours. I know dirtying the stock means nothing but for the few that pass a true real world 'this was dropped in the mud last night' would seal the victory.
I'd be curious to hear how the mud affected the charging handle when used, if you got an insight. - Obviously because it locked back and ran properly you never needed to use it, but I'm wondering if it would have functioned properly if you had needed to, either due to malfunction, or just clearing the gun. Just remembering the AUG test where the cocking handle was totally locked up by the dirt.
I've been impressed with everything that PSA does, except for their barrels. They shoot fine until they are quickly shot out. I think this is a heat treatment issue, which is probably why they shoot well for their price. If it's a softer heat treatment, there's usually less warping, causing less accuracy issues.
I'm not familiar with the jackl but he didn't charge a round into the chamber while the handle is cover in mud and if he did I wonder how the gun would handle that.
Welp, had that wrong. I would have thought it was going to fail on the first with that ejection port. As you guys said, it's stopping the stuff getting in, in the first place that really is the pass/fail here.
