What a marvelous story and the actors were completely in character. He and her were so strongly made for each other, it was painful to see them hurt each other. I don't think i had seen love more strong between two people as this and there was no romantic scene at all, think about it. This is the highest form of love. The people around them were so caring and great, it was heart warming to see them trying to fix them back together. This is a movie were there are no bad characters. Think about it, there are no movies like that today. This is real cinema. The last twist in the movie is a bit unrealistic, but it may be my lack of knowledge of Japanese morals. Maybe he could do such a thing as sacrifice himself for her sake. In those days people were practical and knew the importance of making a living. But still, how could he decide that it was better for her to be rich than to be on the stage with him in poverty. actually, logically he is right, but i'm so used people being selfish, they would not perform such a selfless godly caring act. Their disputes were so realistic, this is exactly how people start a dispute and escalade it, i saw it in my own life. Both side do not back down, pride is stronger, especially in today's society it's worse than ever with women not accepting their role as supportive. You can hear many good pragmatic advice being given to them in the movie. His quarreling with her seemed pathological but actually that's quite normal because they were raised together. It creates a harmony and they can easily irritate their deepest emotions as well as being extremely comfortable with each other.
Tsurujoro just led Tsurahachi to the right path. Career or popularity will fade but marriage is till death. He cannot let Tsurahachi leave what is comfortable life as a wife of a wealthy man.
Some will say marriage IS death. True love is life long, be it joyful or painful. A cold ,silent tomb can have pretty walls, a humble dirt path can be sunny and buzzing of promise.
i watched Osaka Elegy the other day and a guy almost lost his job for embezzling 300 yen and had a hard time getting the money back...so hard in fact his wife prostituted herself out to get it lol

私の親戚が、長唄の師匠さんで、若い頃、聴きに行きました！
三味線は素晴らしいですが、今や三味線を引く方が、少なくなり、ましてや、新内も‼️非常に残念です！何とか後世に残して欲しい文化です❕
成瀬監督の後年の名作「浮雲」に繋がる作品ですが、此方の方はラストシーンが相手の「幸福」を願いながら、長谷川一夫と藤原鎌足の酒場が、心に響きます‼️
あらためて、アップして戴きまして感謝致します❕
亡き母親がこの映画をもう一度観たいと言っていました 苦労と迷惑ばかりかけてた不肖の息子です
この映画に出ている山田五十鈴さんと同い年で誕生日も一緒でそれを口癖のように言っていました それを思い出して涙ポロポロで見終わりました 母親が生きてる時にCZcamsがあればとか、そんなことが頭の中をかけめぐる今宵です CZcamsに載せてくれて有難うございます

素晴らしい！山田五十鈴の初々しさ、長谷川一夫の若々しさ。大好きな成瀬作品･･･観たかった作品がやっと観ることができました。
よくぞアップしてくれました！名画座で一度見て、成瀬監督のBEST1だと確信しておりましたが、その後DVD化もろくにされず、もう2度と見れないものと深く悲しんでおりました。また再び観る事ができ感謝感激です(^^♪

最後まで見て悶々とさせる映画・・・寝つきが悪くなる。もう一度文字起こしのつもりでノートに詳しく台詞をまとめ直して観直しているところです。いろいろ見えてくる。人生・職業・結婚などの価値観・・・男性の意地とか，男気・江戸っ子ぶり。お豊さんの言い分が断然正しいということも。時代背景考えると進んだ？女性の自立と男性の意地と甘えと・・・・などが。有難く感謝します。戦前は1円で家一軒建ちましたからね。男が大黒柱という発想も古いですよね。経済と結婚。『二人の世界』のように結婚して共に働いて借りたおカネは返すという発想も欲しいですね。
