I am a Westerner, but have long had Asian friends and a deep love for Japanese film. This movie was a disappointment. The protagonist Tochuken here is so self involved, jumping off the train without a word. Ending up drinking in a geisha house...leaving his loyal wife, and his acting company, in the lurch, complete chaos. We later learn he has been ignoring his son for years. Then later, after a fragile reconciliation, he goes berserk, wanting to 'kill him".. He keeps repeating the phrase "I will use it in my performance." Whether it's conflict with his gravely ill wife, the acquisition of a nubile young mistress, or anger toward his 'weak' son, whose defense of his father provokes rage, rather than causes him to be proud of his son's steadfast devotion. This film's main character Tochuken may be a fine example of excellence. But as a human being, the man is sadly lacking. Years later this screen persona: the strong, silent type would re-emerge, evolved, and with full, forceful dimension, even heart. By the legendary Mifune. Who would get it right...
First pre-requisite to understand this movie is not to be a Japanophile but to be a performing artist oneself or to appreciate performances. You start by saying that you have long had Asian friends as if that gave you legitimacy to trump : "you're not a japanese you cannot understand". That's a very abject and problematic snobbish false thinking. Well, i too am a life long Asianophile and a lover of Japanese culture but where we differ, I am an artist, and it's that part the artist that is critical to appreciate this movie. Artists cannot be normal people who lead normal lives. Disagree all you want, you'll be contradicted by about every successful artist. That is also why most performing artists marry other performing artists, because a regular job person could never understand. And this movie beautifully and dramatically showed it. He wanted her to die as a performer and she understood and did. Your judgement is that of a conformist who expects everybody to fit the mold of the ideal family. A performing artist is getting judged by thousands all the time, that requires some strength of character that not many can handle. This is well portrayed here. His son dishonored him by using a dagger instead of fighting bare handed. That is a manly honorific thing, as a western woman you cannot understand. And you expect that every movie should present you with a "lovable" character, wrong again. then just keep it to hollywood which is harmful to young people. Real life make you think like this movie does, but not in a degenerate hollywood way in a real life struggle and difficulties way. As such this is a successful movie and I do not have to like the lead character to say so. He is absolutely right. Although he goes to extremes, he is a good ambassador of the performing artist's life.
Nobody is perfect. Great artists such as van Gogh or martial artist like Bruce Lee, are only human and with frailty and fraud. That make them great, their humanity, their emotions and their desire to honestly express themselves. And I do not think Mifune looks like a singer or musician of any kind. He is more a macho man.
@@liucolin5946 bruce lee was no great artist, he had the right family background to know english and grew up in HK where he learned just enough opera acting and kung fu to be the first chinese to make a start in western cinema. He was very flawed in many ways that is for sure not too mention cheating his wife with an actress the day he died.
【桃中軒雲右衛門】(1873-1916) 浪曲師。群馬、高崎出身。祭文語りであった父について修行。明治40年/1907東京本郷座で浪曲「忠臣蔵銘々伝」を口演して一か月間満員記録の成功。浪花節を東京の大劇場に進出させた。琵琶、浄瑠璃、清元などを取り入れて、いわゆる「雲調」=勇壮な雲右衛門節を創始。また武士道の鼓吹=鼓舞を標榜、『赤穂義士伝』を得意とした。在来の浪速節を整理統合して、浪曲の社会的地位の向上に力を尽くした功績は大きい。
時代の風を感じられました。素晴らしい文化を持つ日本人に感動します。何事に対しても少し真面目すぎたのだと思います。今は、ずるさだけが蔓延しています。ありがとう。

今回本作初めて拝見しました‼️まさか、「月形龍之介」さんが、成瀬作品に、出演するとは⁉️
私の子供の頃は東映の時代劇で、「悪役専門」又良い役でも「水戸黄門」でした‼️どう見ても、余りつながらいと思っていました！
しかし「芸道物」で、「歌行灯」長谷川一夫、山田五十鈴さんの、「芸道一代」に、連なるのでしょう‼️成瀬監督の「やるせな」「哀惜感」は感じます‼️
でも、私の子供時代は「廣澤虎造」の「森の石松」で、銭湯で、ご老人が、「唸って」いました！
私も、老人になってしまいました‼️が、「高校三年生」を唸っています😅😊

雲右衛門は名前と有名な写真しか識らず、本人ではないものの、まさか映画があるとは知りませんでした。しかも成瀬巳喜男なのですね。ありがとうございます！

昭和初期、浪曲は落語、漫才、講談とは比べ物にならないほど人気があったそうですね。
のちに名匠と言われる成瀬巳喜男監督、月形黄門様若い。
浪曲部分は雲右衛門本人のようですがセリフは龍之介と、見たのですが違うでしょうか。

その時代には「合った」芸風だったのでしょうが、酒、女に溺れて行くしかないのが淋しい。虎造にしても自動車事故で相乗りしていた売れない浪曲師は死亡、虎造は怪我だけ・・なのに保険会社からの支払いをほとんど取った虎造に寡婦は怒鳴り込んだが虎造は追い返した。所詮芸人はこんなもの。

人bの世というものは、時に、成長がある。今までの境涯を脱皮して、新しい体に整えて立つ時、皆その恐ろしきところに、戻る勇気をさらにもたなければならん。そういうときに、才能者は逡巡する。
美空ひばりは、そういうことおw、舞台の一等最初に手のひらに人をかいて、飲んでさえも逡巡した。
大物たあ小さく見えて、なっとぴう人の目に納まりきらない、才能者なんだあ。
才能者又はクリエイターは、毎日毎瞬間その連続の中で磨いている。
出来上が田っといって、手のひらに人おw書いて飲むことすらできんものが、世を制していくはずもなかろうかと思う。
むしろ、この映画の「肝心」が、ようわかる年になりました。豪傑の生きざまシカと見届けた思い。

天皇陛下の大権を民意に任したのは憲法には中田が、ケンプ宇野象徴と権威権力をもった天応が、伝統として機構の外にあって、しばし庶民の熱い愛情をもって、荘厳意君臨吾されたのは、当時も、胃甘も「おてんとうさま」とそのお天道様を振り仰ぐ、日本人がいれば、世が革むる「君民一体」こそ、日本の、世界にない、素晴らしい「仁徳善政」が今にあるということ。

芸人でもない弁士でもない、こういった庶民御護民官は、これだけの状の熱い男という、義理人情の映画なんだよ。
＂所詮、芸人はこんなもの＂となんと、人として道徳をわきまえていない言葉なのでしょうか。その辺の人々だって、家族、親類に迷惑をかける人もいますし、親として子供を育てる事を放棄し、子供の養育費用も出さない人なんてざらにいるのではないでしょうか。だいたい、人より抜きんでる人という人に完全なる人を求める事じたい偏っていませんか。例えば、歌手、俳優で活躍しながら、自宅で、家事、子育てなど全てやりこなせる人など、そうそう、いないのではないでしょうか。＂所詮、芸人はこんなもの＂と言われるならば、＂一般人もこんんなもの＂という事でしょうか。
