I watched this thinking that the arranged marriage woman, Yurie, would get a bad role in the story or that she would become the victim terribly hurt by her husband's past, and that things would go down in agony but to my surprise the generosity that she rose up to find a healthy solution for all and the qualities of heart she displayed all along really inspired me and impressed me. She turned out to be the character with highest integrity and heart in this movie that all loved even though she could easily have been justified to hate everyone but never did. Instead she loved all even gave her husband an immediate redemption. Yet she was no fool, she used her power efficiently without hurting anyone. This is very inspirational. I think people like this do exist or have existed. The movie is a bit slow paced but that how life was back then, better than today hectic, disconnected, noisy and chaotic life.
This director loves trains! Behind (or in front of) a key scene, a train passes by more often than not. Here we even have a streetcar passing through. I've noticed this in a number of Mikio's other movies as well. p.s. Mitsuko is the best friend anyone could ever ask for. p.p.s. Yurie is an angel sent from heaven. All you need is love...
This is a nice, entertaining movie. However, most of it really stretches credibility to the limits. And also, what an Amazing Coincidence. Of all the dress shops in Tokyo, a woman comes shopping to the one where her husband's ex works!
Well what better outcome is there ? A single mother with a child had no hope of finding a husband. At least now, the child is still with one of his biological parent but now has also an adoptive mother and the biological mother has better chances of marrying. It's the best for all. But Yurie is truly incredible for having that idea, an exceptional person of moral character.
But Toyomi's parents get no involvement in their grand child's life. The writer failed to tie up that loose end. The whole scenario stretches credibility. Especially considering how human nature really is. I mean two women who could be kind to each other with a love interest involved is difficult to imagine. It's an engrossing film and very entertaining otherwise.
It's a culture from a different country than yours that you are seeing incorrectly through anachronistic western individualism eyes. Not to mention pre WWII era, only 8 years after the great depression. Minds not yet polluted by post WWII americanism, and especially no woman 'liberation' (i would say degeneration). There is no stretch in the story. Just a world that we have lost. As for her parents, they would have considered her a lost cause already given Japanese standards, having had a child unmarried is the end for a woman's hope to find any suitor. Keep in mind that not long before that movie it was still common for parents to sell their daughter if they could not make end's meet. Also, even a successful daughter after she married would no longer be considered part of her parent's family and may not even see them anymore except on rare occasions.
The logic in the film seems simple. Rich man wins all - good marriage, nice baby and respect. So everybody at the end is happy. Society is harmonious. Minagawa's family got money to save their family from bankruptcy. Minagawa got redemption and Yurie got a lovely baby. Toyomi is happily teaching in kindergarten with her daughter being the heir of a rich family in coming future. In reality, it could only be half true. As human nature is not like this. A woman without her lover, and her only child could never be happy. Arranged marriage by parents who insisted destroying true love should also be condemned instead of condoned. This, I am afraid, is Naruse's lesser film.
再度観賞できて感謝です。なぜか映像が記憶に残っておりませんでした。感動がないハッピーエンド。男の苦悩は激しそうですが，こちらの心には届かない。耐えて忍ぶ女トヨミ（入江さん）と自分の子として育てるミナガワの妻ユリエとに救われている。仲を取り持つ親友・ミツコも，その夫も善良な人々。これほど幸運な（そして裕福な身分の）男はいないだろう。ただ，男の身勝手，不誠実さだけが残る。そんなことはどうでもいいのだろうか。楽観的に人の好さに甘んじて生きられたらいい，あるいは苦悩を超越しているのか。ありがとうございました。

めでたし，めでたし。主人公の頼りない事。「とよみさん次第よ！」旦那より物わかりのよい奥さん。出来過ぎか。周囲の日地たちに感謝ですね。やはり劇的に作られていました。淡白な愛情を感じましたが。劇場的見世物だから耐えられる。庶民の実際は修羅場でしょ。

正月映画ですか？多少ヒットしたのでは、見る分わりには面白かったです。入江さんが猫化けするのじゃないかと後半ドキドキしましたが、最後の子供の喧嘩程度で済みホッとしました。見応えあるアップ有難うございます。

驚いた！戦前にこんなメロドラマがあったとは。女性映画で定評の成瀬巳喜男監督は戦後の作品でしか知らなかったが、戦前も描いていたんですね。英語タイトルの「経験から学ぶ」では味気ないが、邦題の「禍福は糾える縄の如し」だと深い。些か出来すぎたオチですがねｗ

赤ちゃんは母乳で育てたほうが良いです。なかには母乳しか飲まない赤ちゃんもいて、そういう子は母親以外の人が簡単に育てることはできません。成瀬巳喜男の映画は好きですが、このストーリーにはちょっと無理があると思うなあ。理想的な人間関係を描こうとしたのかもしれないけれど、このストーリーは妄想の部類です。はがゆい。

原作は菊池寛ですからね。
ユリエは事実上の同性愛者なのではないか。
これを言うと男の同性愛はあっても女の同性愛は無いと頑なに信じてる人には理解できないでしょうが。
婚約者に対して特別恋愛感情も無さそうだし、何よりトヨミを一目で気に入って子供まで迎え入れてしまう溺愛ぶり。
当時なりの表現で女性同性愛を描いた作品のように思えてなりません。
