Arcane’s SHORTEST Arc: HUCK (Explained) | 1min Analysis

    It’s the whole story of Piltover/Zaun told in minutes through in a single character. Huck is the first character we meet in the Undercity and we see Vander enforcing business ethics in Huck’s deal. In Act 2, Huck betrays Vi to Silco for shimmer. What was once a poor but healing society that was building itself up through honesty and enabling opportunity became a poro-eat-poro world of backstabbers, shortsightedness, and monsters. But Huck’s story tells a darker story than I realized on first watch. It gets to the heart of what makes addiction such a terrible disease.

      @@steve.mxnson_ He said sorry for "everything", so it did also include the past, but also much more imminently, the future. That Shimmer clinic was setup to provide relief for the addicts by Silco. It doesn't hand out full doses, but rather a daily med dose to try and undo the damage caused by rampant abuse of the early crude serum. Perhaps, out of care, but most probably out of pragmaticism, Shimmer is more useful if you can control/limit/mitigate the side effects, and developing a treatment for the addicts would aid Zaun. After the destruction of the lab in EP3, there was massive amounts of Shimmer that was looted from the building as Sevika was out of commission getting an arm replacement and Singed was healing, Silco was busy with young Jinx and filling the void left by Vander. So no one was watching the warehouses. Silco didn't "Flood the streets with Shimmer" When his back was turned the streets came to the shimmer and looted it, then resold it as a novelty. Huck wanted Shimmer, before he took his first dose. He was addicted to "the Idea of being powerful" not the Shimmer.

      @@djx7134 The clinic setup so deep in the undercity where only the wretches dwell, where Vi's parents dwelt, and why they fought on the bridge. The only clinic you see in the show being used. The one that serves no other purpose but to care for the wretches down there, as explicitly stated in the show, by one of the characters who willingly ingested shimmer for personal gratification... If it was for the standard people of the undercity, it would be located in the Lanes or the Promenade.
      You can see Silco talking during this sequence, but not hear his words... rewatch this scene. More time passes during that brief sequence than you think. You see that in between flashes Silco has removed his jacket and is crouching down by Huck laying unde the rubble, then he gets up in a rage and stomps his head to jelly.

      True. He probably really was gonna turn her in from the beginning, but he genuinely wanted to help her. It can also be interpreted as, since he knows how skilled Vi is, she'd be able to defend herself and escape successfully. Like the vid said, he was a businessman, and while being driven by his addiction, he still felt indebted to Vander for his help in the first arc and wanted to help his daughter.

    I don't actually see it like that.
    I think, at first, he really did want to help out Vi.
    But then he saw Shimmer and started to crave for it.
    I think he tried to resist his craving at first, tried to tell himself he shouldn't betray Vander's kid [and Vander himself, in a way.]
    But, well...
    ... he failed.
    Simple as that.

    • @redroseibarahime8755
      @redroseibarahime8755 Před 2 lety +43

      I think it is a combination of your and schnee's theory. Huck did help Vi because he truly wanted to help her and(!) use her to get the shimmer he is craving. I think he helped her getting better in hopes that she would be able to flee in time (as the prodigy she was always said to be) later on. Because if he really just wanted to keep her alive in order to set her up he would be among the people to attack her but he went directly away after he got his potion of shimmer (probably also out of shame). Plus, Silco didn't say he wanted them alive - he would have been very content when sb. already killed them and delivered just the corpses. So I think the theory of keeping Vi alive just to get shimmer is not valid in at this point. I really think he let her heal up before betraying her so he could get his shimmer while she is hopefully (or at least has a chance to) getting away. That way he get's his shimmer and doesn't have to go in full betrayal mode in his opinion (getting shimmer and giving her location away = betrayal of Vi BUT if Vi ends up dead on top of it, this means he would have betrayed Vander as well and he said himself that he owns him his life and more).
      I think his character arc is supposed to show that a lot of the Undercity people still have some good values and intentions but are tempted and forced by the conditions to betrayal even though they actually don't want to do this. And they try to minimize the damage but nevertheless can never completely avoid it. And trust, like it was handled with Vander, is not present anymore- everybody can betray you for a certain price/craving. The fact that he doesn't want Vi to end up dead is a memento/tribute to the old days when Vander was protecting the Undercity. Connections are also not the same they were before - the Undercity changed considerably since Vi went to prison and Silco took over.

    • @johnnyblackrants7625

      A junkie can have good intentions, but the craving for the next dose is always stronger.
      In fact I would argue he couldn't plan to sell out Vi later because when if comes to getting a fix, junkies don't plan long-term, they need it now. So he had to start with good intentions.
      He is a good metaphor for the undercity though. Even if he means to do good, he ends up ruining things for immediate profit.

      @redroseibarahime8755 Před 2 lety +4

      @@OGRENZO94 when Caitlyn takes the potion he has a reflection of shimmer and a craving look on his face- therefore we can conclude that he is an addictive.
      Huck refuses to go back to Vi with Catilyn (because he needs to tell Silco's goons about it in order to get shimmer who are swarming everywhere because they search for her so it is easy for him to find them). He also apologized for it in advance. And the confirmation of that is given by his look when he takes shimmer out of Silco's hand. He has a guilty and apologetic look on his face because of this betrayal and dissapears after that because he doesn't want to see the outcome of his betrayal.

    Huck is somebody who could afford to thrive under Vander, a not so hardcore middle-man who did his business fairly, because the community had his back. He is meek, but he is earning, he has success.
    And we see that under Silco he had no chance to succeed. Nation of Zaun chewed him up and infected him with its hideousness.
    He doesn't betray Vi because that's his big plan. But because his addiction compells him to. He might have very well been sincere in saving Vi. But it doesn't matter. Because Shimmer dictates the rules now.

      @mgh7634 Před rokem +2

      It's hard not to feel absolute sympathy for the man. Because addiction really is just that strong. It's like a form of madness, one that robs you of all dignity and all sense of self. It's something that you may never be able to get control of without serious help, and if you don't have a support network to provide that help, and especially if you're in an environment that's working against you and feeding into your weaknesses, then it may be impossible to overcome.
      When he betrays Vi, it doesn't leave you with a feeling of betrayal or anger. Just pity. He looks so ashamed in that moment; but the need for that next hit overcomes all other forms of reason or love or loyalty. It's just the shimmer.

    The fact that I saw him help Cait to heal Vi and didn't realize that it was Huck and that I had seen him before, confirms something to me: Addictions change you, they change your priorities and your way of acting and rationalizing.
    Even though you may be aware of how destructive your addiction is to others and to yourself and you feel guilty for it, but there's either nothing you can do about it because the pull is too strong, or you don't care/stopped caring and the next hit will make it all go away.
    I work with a lot of people who live with addictions to some hard stuff (drugs of any kind, alcohol, you name it) and beneath it all, most of them are good, decent people. Some used to be lucrative businesspeople, doctors/lawyers, and the like, before they lost everything and gave up. I'm not saying everyone with an addiction is like this, just that it's a common trait with the ones I interact with.

His apology could be anything from just feeling sorry for her, himself, the entire Undercity, to him feeling like he betrayed them purely by using shimmer knowing it was from Silco and Silco killed Vander. He is in a small part contributing to the problem and supporting Silco through his addiction.

    No, Huck helping Caitlyn and Vi means he still knows how to do good. Although he can probably figure out what Silco would be doing to her, he considers being alive better than being dead (in that regard similar to Marcus in ep. 3).
    Huck is representing a generic undercity citizen and in some ways also as the Undercity itself (as you say). Trying to make a living by being busy, diligent and honest, yet being bullied around, so having to rely on assistance (Vander). So he is tempted easily when Silco prosmised with shimmer he can be strong by himself (strength being the primary virtue of the undercity, e.g. Sevika to Vander ‘You look weak’). Yet, instead of becoming strong he became addicted. His appearance in ep. 6 is also an example of Silco’s ‘There’s a monster inside all of us’.

    I'm quite convinced a lot of people are kind of drawing blood from the stone of Arcane, where there is a lot of high quality stuff, but a lot rushed content that was cut for time, and people are making connections between rushed plotlines as genius subtext instead of, well, rushed and unfinished plot threads.
    Arcane is really good. The animation is flawless, the direction is actually fantastic, scene composition and cinematography is all just delicious. But all of these beautiful scenes are not stitched together as tightly as they were made.

    When I rewatched Arcane, I recognized Huck, and my I just thought he wanted to repay Vander for helping him. My take was that Huck helped Caitlyn get help for Vi to make her able enough to take what he was going to send her way (selling her out to Silco for Shimmer). That shop owner looks like they have a lot of credibility for effective stuff, so for Huck to direct Caitlyn to someone who can get Vi on her feet the fastest instead of the cheapest place for some Advil, makes me think we wanted to at least give Vi a chance in honor of Vander’s protection in the past.

    not enough people know this, but Riot and Fortiche spent 8 years working on Arcane, it's a true passion project to show their love and support to all who have given them the same throughout the years. Definitely wish there was more extras and behind the scenes stuff, I wanna know Fortiche's work flow and their specifics on virtual cinematography/camera work, modeling, texture trio packs (diffuse, specular, and regular are typically a standard and i can see it occasionally), work distribution, etc. I really want to pick their brains a bit.

    Idk, I feel like this is the first assessment I've heard that doesn't fit. His facial expressions and mannerisms are very genuine.
    I got the feeling he truly wanted to help Vi, but when he saw Caitlyn receiving her bottle of Shimmer, it brought forward all of his desperate cravings for it. He knows where he can get it, he knows it's wrong, but he can't help himself. Such is the way of addiction.
    I don't think he actually wanted to betray or cause her to be caught by Silco, but felt he had no choice when he realized his only way to get Shimmer would be to turn her in. 🤷‍♀️
    Just my two cents.

    The two times I’ve watched it I never realized he betrayed. It never crossed my mind the he had been the reason silco had found them. Even after the moment where he takes the shimmer. I thought that was just him kinda going backwards and showing no matter how much character development he had gotten the scenes before, he still ended up returning to the drug. But yeah, didn’t realize he was betraying. Maybe that’s just on me cause I’m such a “find the good in people” kinda person. Just thought maybe silco had other goons report back or somethin.

    Oh. Interesting.
    I saw it this way. He actually genuinely wanted to help Vi because of everything Vander had done for him and the city in general. He had every intention of giving them the drug and then leaving them be.
    BUT then - while Caitlyn was grabbing the vial - he SAW it, FELT the drug again as it was brought closer to his face. That's why his eyes lit up for a second. This is when he no longer cared for anything but another dose. This is when he decided to rat them out.
    I dunno. For some reason, I just want to believe there was still something good in him. That he at least had good intentions initially.

    Hmm idk about this one.. Why wouldn't Silco "pay for a corpse"? After all, he wants her dead. Maybe this is a misinterpretation from Huck but idk. I don't think the only reason he helped Vi was so that he could turn her in. There is an element of genuine care there, further enhanced by the Cait hug.
    Also: when does he tell Silco that Vi is there? Does he do it after they got the cure or before? I like to believe that he does it afterwards so that there was at least a bit of doubt about whether he should do it or not, after his interaction with Cait. But that would mean Silco is a super speedy boi to get down there.. + the line "tell her I'm sorry, about everything". Does that mean he's sorry for having sold her out already or that he is about to sell her out?
    Buuuuuut your take is more extreme and dramatic and i'm nitpicking at this point sooo yeah I like your take haha

    I wouldn't be surprised if the writers wrote "Drug addict 1" in the script and Fortiche were like "listen buddy. It takes a long time to design and rig these character models. Why don't we just use the character model for "guy at bar 1", name him Huck or something and then write the fact that he would've known Vander and Vi into his character."
    I'm not saying this to cheapen Fortiche's achievements. I think the ability to manage their budget and to use decent writing, 2D backgrounds, recycling character models and other methods to mask the fact that they don't have a "Disney" budget is what made Arcane feel handcrafted and personal

    Idk if its intentional but prolly not but Its a fitting first impression/view cause we are seeing the world through the eyes of kids who lacks understanding of the world around them. We learn later that in some capacity Vander is more flawed than we thought, and in some way, if we overlook how wrong and extreme silco's methods are and how horrific of a leader silco would be, we could root for Silco's goal of uniting Zaun without the control of Piltover.

    I believe there’s more going on here with Huck than what’s shown in Season 1. He didn’t complete the sentence “I just wanted to know what it’s like to make the other people afraid, instead of…” implying there’s more there than what’s shown. This video czcams.com/video/IA-v_LB3Qpc/video.html was posted by LoL CZcams account and it shows a strange guy going into The Last Drop, someone attacks him and shortly after Huck’s glasses are broken on the floor. I’m guessing it’s a flashback we’ll see in season 2 and an explanation for why Huck took shimmer in the first place. He’s probably dealing with abuse and needs shimmer to fight off whoever is taking advantage of him. Imo he genuinely did care about VI’s life because he really was grateful to Vander and it showed in his mannerisms. I’m not sure about Huck selling out Vi for shimmer because it would go against his appreciation to Vander. But I could be wrong.

  • @XolBurn
    @XolBurn Před 2 lety

    Not if someone has mentioned this before but, what stopped Vander from providing Powder any gunpowder or chemtech? I mean if you look at Jinx's chomper bombs it looks like it uses a mixture of gunpowder chemtech and another form of liquid.
    If we're going with the theory that Vander can see Powders more psychopathic side, that would explain why Vander never gave her a gun or anything that would make her bombs actually work.
    Okay sure, an argument can be made that the undercity wasn't as developed when Vander was running the place but you're telling me that the Leader of the undercity, the guy who overseas, manages and protects the it wouldn't be able to find the materials and a proper place for Powder to express her mechanical prowess.
    I think that if Vander believed and cultivated the goodness in Powder rather than fearing what she could have become, she wouldn't be so insecure at the time we saw her at Act 1.

    If he wanted to, he could have attacked Caitlyn for just that drop of shimmer. I don't believe he went and got Silco, why would he listen to some addict anyway? They could make up any stories for shimmer. I think Silco found their location, and headed over there with a supply of shimmer to convince the addicts to help him. That, was when Huck gave the info about Vi being in that decrepit building. While we don't see what happens to him specifically, I assume he ran off with a bottle of shimmer, not attack Vi, as he'd simply feel too guilty, and he got to leave with it due to telling Silco where Vi was.
