Watching arcane was a relief to me. The female characters and the way they're written are the ways I had to imagine growing up. It feels like other afab/women are finally being portrayed fairly. It got tiring, growing up watching media where the trope was damsel in distress or women just furthering the plot for male characters. Vi and jinx in particular are both characters I strongly identify with in different ways. Definitely felt very heard and seen when watching this, at some points being on the verge of tears from how validating it was.

What I find most interesting is the way Heimerdinger and Mel seemed to be the most powerful people on the council with Mel ultimately having more influence than him. We see this especially in the beginning when we see the way Mel ineracts with the other council members like a board game, buying a children's puzzle toy for another councilman and lying about it's difficulty. And then he steuggles with it. And then again when Mel comes up with the idea to invite Jace to the council, something unprecedented, untraditional, and basically random. She makes a face at the same council member and as a result, all the others vote with her. The same thing happens when Jace tries to fire Heimerdinger, everyone agrees with him but no one is willing to actually vote until Mel does. And then again when Jace brings the proposal for a free nation of Zaun. They all jump from their seats in outrage, it's unprecedented, it goes against everything they stand for, it ignores every procedure. Byt when Mel finally raises her hand, the others do too. Lowkey, Mel would make a great villain if this was all done intentionally

It's interesting because the bit about leverage isn't one that I've heard anyone quote, and yet I *do* remember it very clearly despite it being an unimportant line from a movie I haven't seen in probably 15 years. It even ends up bouncing around my brain anytime I'm doing something that requires leverage.

i see A LOT of myself in jinx just watching the first episode, i could already see bits and pieces of myself in jinx, but in episode 3, the moment vi left her is what truly made jinx resonate with me as a character, as my own sister had left me when i was just as young as jinx was at the time. i cant explain to you the way that episode opened up some incredibly deep wounds, a show had never made me cry the way arcane did. the pure fear and confusion when vi left her behind to save vander, the way jinx cried "i only wanted to help," when she screamed "why did you leave me?!" and sobbing for vi to come back to her, reminded me way, WAY too much of me when my sister left. everything about her from then on, such as her intense codependent relationship with silco (i mean, i even felt myself growing incredibly attached to silco the moment he took in jinx), fearing that silco thinks less of her because she messed up, her intense jealousy and demonizing of caitlyn, and by extension her fear that vi likes caitlyn better than her and that caitlyn has stolen vi from her, her overall impulsivity, talking and screaming to herself when she's in her head and how quickly she spirals, intense and irrational fears of rejection and abandonment...holy shit, i dont think i have ever seen this much of myself in a fictional character before. i have never EVER seen a character, much less a woman, written the way that arcane wrote jinx, but im so happy i finally feel fucking recognized. i feel so seen with jinx, and i love her so much. she quickly became one of my favorite comfort characters (honestly i just straight up kin her at this point)

Miyazaki writes women very naturally, how real women would react to situations dependent on their personality. No power fantasy girlbossing which is unfortunately often seen from female writers these days, or the wild swinging of depiction from objectifying on one end to girl bossing merry sue writing which is often seen from males who have little to no experience interacting with women, mostly from the west; As for most anime writing, if it isn't a women writing the character and instead a guy, more often than not he writes the character from a very male shallow understanding of female behaviour and said female will fall into a trope behaviour category and her entire personality will be governed by said trope personality, mainly because most Japanese male manga artists as well as anime writers have very limited social interaction with women in general, even when they're married. See the difference is, Miyazaki had a life before he started animation (in other words he touched grass before the need to touch grass), he was not effected by nor impacted by the modern anime industry cultural zeitgeist nor does he care to embrace it, he is too old for that; When he was young it was just getting started and his "normie perspective" and attitude has rubbed off on his studio and everyone who works there, so they share his views. Very old school, grounded approach, normal stories, no stereotypes or tropes. There is a theme and a lesson for each story but apart from that, the personalities of the characters are reflective of their Heroes Journey as opposed to meeting some objective purpose or fanservice fulfilment. "modern anime" tropes have only been a thing since roughly 2006 onwards and never really came into full blown personality and hair colour madness until roughly 2012 and Ghibli is one of the few studios who have managed to completely resist this. A lot of it had to do with basically money and trying to piggy back on the successes of Neon Gensis, Future Diary, slice of life stuff like Host Clubs etc and Naruto which all cemented modern anime tropes. None of which were even a thing when Miyazaki was in his prime in the 80s.
