  • Cliff diver Aidan Heslop first to dive at remarkable Rumkale: Britain’s title hopeful Heslop launches from the rocks at Turkey’s famous fortress ahead of the 2023 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series final in four weeks’ time.
The ancient Rumkale fortress in Gaziantep witnessed just another milestone in its long history when British cliff diver Aidan Heslop performed a magnificent dive directly from the rocks into the dazzling turquoise waters of the Euphrates.
The location in Turkey’s southeast, which literally translates as ‘Roman Castle’, was once a riverside fortress on the Euphrates. Today, due to a dam built on the river, it sits on the side of a small lake and provides for the perfect launch point for one of the world’s best cliff diving athletes.
21-year-old Heslop used the downtime before the final competition of the 2023 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series in Auckland, New Zealand, in November to explore this unique site, believed to have been built in Byzantine times. “This is such an incredible and historic site to be diving from. I'm just privileged to be able to be here, let alone for it to be a high diver's paradise with all of these incredible spots that they have around this beautiful river,” he expressed his excitement after the 26.5m dive.
Accessible only by boat, Rumkale is perched on a high hill surrounded by steep cliffs that rise abruptly from the banks of the Euphrates and Merzimen rivers. It’s architectural harmony with nature is so profound that it is difficult to distinguish where the natural rock formations ended, and human construction began. The fortress covers an area of 120 metres in width and 200 metres in length.
“This place is 2000 years old, part of the Roman Empire. You can see all of these caves and houses where people have lived 2000 years ago. It's incredible. There are not many opportunities you have in places to really explore the ruins like this,” Heslop, who is still in contention for the overall World Series title with one stop to go, is full of reverence for the place where the river Euphrates and the Merzimen stream meet and where history has been made since ancient times.
The season’s two-time competition winner not only made history by becoming the first athlete to dive in Rumkale, but can make cliff diving history by becoming the next Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series champion, where a brand-new overall winner will be crowned for the first time since 2017 on November 19.
