Definitely binged that docu in one day and I’ve been just baffled by it since. So glad to hear your guys take finally, even if it is over a couple weeks ✨
same!!!
I binged over two days. Then watched under thr banner of heaven
I watched it all yesterday.
I binged the whole series. It was actually pretty emotional for me as a guy who grew up there and left in 2000
Well done for getting Issac Woooo 👏

So much love and respect to you sir, I can’t imagine that it was easy and I really hope your life now is awesome or becomes awesome
Welcome to the free world!
So glad you made it out and are free to make your own decisions. ❤. I hope you’ve been able to make your own happiness.
I’ve heard about polygamy and the FLDS here and there before but it wasn’t until I watched this documentary last year that I really got to learn about the organization in depth and understand what its members had to go through. I was disturbed but couldn’t look away and finished the series in 2 days. Very well made documentary
I had the honor of helping support a family who left/escaped the FLDS in Colorado City relocate to WA. They are how I learned of this new series. Also interesting about being told yours was the only true church. I was raised hearing the same thing in a very conservative Calvinistic denomination I grew up in.
I watched this series on Netflix last week. It's heartbreaking in a lot of ways. I'm glad you two are talking about it. 🥰
Read the book the witness wore red or listen to it I think you’ll enjoy it and not enjoy it that is not the proper word and I don’t know what it is I listen to it and I’ll never forget it
I recall travelling to Mormon Church in my early 20's one Sunday, with two other members.
They were talking about the last day being near. My response was that I will turn 50, and the last days still wouldn't have come to pass; they were horrified.
I am now 60.
Same deal with the Jehovah's Witnesses. It's always the last days.
I'm the same age and have had the same thoughts for many years. It's been "the last days" since Joseph Smith. Generations living in fear throughout their lives as the terrible things that could happen at any moment were preached continually year after year.
I just started watching this documentary this week. I’m on episode 4. It’s so awesome to hear Sam’s take and point of view.
It’s heartbreaking but also, I can see how beautiful the memories for Sam can be.
My LDS great grandmother’s patriarchal blessing said she would be alive when Christ returns. She used to preach to us kids about it and then when she passed when I was a young it certainly made me question the validity of it all. My dad spent our childhoods saying the end was any day. I think I’ve heard that now the LDS church is backing away from saying that.
I've heard about many people being told that in their patriarchal blessings, and yes, it feels troublesome. I think now most blessings are a lot more vague in order to avoid not coming true.
Ya, teachings like that take you to a place of fear, rather than living in the moment. I used to be LDS, and I don't have any bad feelings towards them, but I feel a huge weight lifted off. I can't imagine what these kids have to go through in the FLDS.
It just goes to show, you can never be perfect enough, so just be perfectly imperfect.
When I was a teenager, (I’m 28 now) I overheard a group talking about their patriarchal blessing and one of them said their’s says that he would die right before Christ returns but will rise from the dead when Christ comes. I never got mine because I started to question the church around 12 years old
LDS have preached since the 1840s that the end was any day now.
Michael Taylors Yes. It was damaging to be raised with this mind set. I never knew if I would get to drive a car, get married or have children because my dad said “any day now”.
I’ve recently watched the series just to get informed.
We live in Cedar City Utah and have many many neighbors who are FLDS from Short Creek.
Breaks my heart.
I have befriended a few of the ladies over the past 3 years and we support “Holding out Help”, a non profit who assists people leaving the FLDS and other polygamist communities.
When I go into their homes or see the wallpaper on their phone screens, it’s Warren Jeffs picture everywhere. They are so brain washed.
I don’t know what to do for them other than loving them right where they are, praying for them and being available.
God bless you all
Thank you for reviewing this documentary. In Australia here this is the first one I’ve been able to find to watch along with you guys x
I think it is perfectly normal for you to have mixed reactions to this documentary. From your perspective you had a wonderful childhood and the sights and sounds would obviously bring back happy memories. I can also understand how as an adult knowing what you now know you would have mixed emotions. Hold on tight to the good 😊
Oh my gracious, I just watched this a couple weeks ago and could not stop thinking about it. Gosh, it’s just so heartbreaking . I’m so happy you’re talking about it, and you are finding your own happiness. ❤
I love hearing all perspectives on something. You're right when you say that everyone has their own experience. I have the last three parts to watch and can't wait for your thoughts about them.
Thank you for sharing your journey with us, this has been one of the more informative documentaries I've seen about the FLDS. Gives new insight to see former members reacting.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Your personal feelings regarding the documentary comes through. Your bravery and coping skills are admirable.
Just hopped over here from mormon stories & looking forward to catching up on all of y’all’s content! Thanks for doing this!
I have so much respect for you both! I can’t imagine how Sam feels through all of this but I pray that he never ever feels shame for his childhood. He is a survivor and it’s so good to see him smiling about his happy memories because it’s sometimes hard for people to separate the happy memories from what you now know to be a not good situation. God bless you both and your family!
Thank y’all for putting together thoughtful questions and responses.
I grew up Southern Baptist but “Keep Sweet” was a phrase I heard often as a young girl too.
It’s so interesting the more I find that different denominations and religions have much more in common than I previously thought.
Sam's short creek accent is so strong when he says "Rulon"! I think its really cool to hear that, I guess being such a tight community they would have developed many of their own unique phrases and pronunciations. It was really interesting hearing your deep dive on this episode of the documentary, can't wait to hear the rest. Thanks for sharing :)
The sound quality is so great! Thanks guys!
Fascinating to hear Sam’s reactions to episode 1. My heart very much goes out to him. I hope Sam remains aware and vigilant of his feelings of trauma, that they don’t get overwhelming. He mentioned flashbacks so pay attention to that. It could bring up emotional issues. Thank you for sharing your memories and perspective. I look forward to episode 2 review.
So many hugs! I can’t even imagine seeing your childhood on tv and reliving what you so firmly believed as a child and that feeling of shock on how different things are now. Being able to show that FLDS at one time wasn’t as crazy as Warren Jeffs made it to be now. Thank you for sharing !
YAY! CANT WAIT FOR YALL ON MORMON STORIES!!
💜🧡💛💚💙
This is how I found your channel. I was so i try after watching it. But I am subscribing because I really enjoy watching you both!!
I literally watched all the episodes the day before my criminal law exam LOL and can't wait to see the reaction OMG
I love hearing all this about your guys' story. So glad you started a CZcams channel to share it with people. :)
And good job explaining in the beginning (of this video) how everyone from the FLDS was affected differently and will have varying stories of their own experience.
It's definitely on my list to watch the Keep Sweet documentary, I'm just so sickened by Warren Jeffs and all the stuff I know about it that I haven't gotten around to it yet, lol, but I intend to.
Anyway sorry for the long message, lol. 🤪
Much love you guys!!! :)
So happy to hear you are scheduled with John Dehlin! Long overdue!
This is answering so many of my questions. Haven't seen this far back. Hope Sam is ok and is kind to himself afterwards
Just finished watching the docuseries... Can't wait for more of your reaction videos!
Thank you!
I'm so happy you guys got on Mormon Stories!!! I love watching your videos so much, you both are just so wholesome & genuine people. Thank you for creating this amazing content for all of us. Love from your Arizonan neighbors!!
Thank you so much!
So excited you're going to be on Mormon Stories!
I found you guys because I finished that documentary a few weeks ago and it made me search for what else is out there on flds..I can’t wait to find out your take on it, from what youve shared so far on the channel, Sam’s experience sounds so mild in comparison!!
Born and raised in Utah and had no idea this ever happened. That documentary really opened my eyes
Excited to see you guys on Mormon Stories
CANNOT WAIT for the Mormon Stories panel!!! Love from Australia, you are both such amazing people! 🙌
Thank you so much!
Just rewatched your reaction video, to this documentary, watched all 4 episodes, looking forward to the next 3 reviews
Looking so forward to the next one!
Oh Thanks for doing this video! cant wait to watch your reaction.. i just recently got through watching this on netflix..
I am a never-Mormon & happy you were on Mormon Stories! I listened to your interview & the discussion panel & it was fantastic.
Omg YAY! I was one of the people telling Mormon Stories to have you guys on!!!
Aww thank you so much! John said that his inbox had been blowing up from our loyal viewers! =)
So psyched that you’re going to be on Mormon Stories!
It’s so great to see the perspective of someone who lived on the inside and in the moment. I’ve liked your videos from the beginning, and they are just getting more real and fascinating. You are doing such a great service to the history of the people and the leadership as well.
Thank you so much!
By Grace you have come through this. Good to see your ability to now work towards what you feel is right for you both
Thank you so much!
SOOOOO excited for the Mormon Stories collaboration!! This is going to be great you guys!
This show was a good one. I like the way they did it and it was so interesting 😊
Thank you so much! We are so excited as well!

Finally! 💜
So excited to see y’all on Mormon Stories!!
Thanks! We are so excited to share some more details of our story. =)
You guys are amazing. I am in awe of how Sam continues to remain positive yet fully cognizant of the horrors of the FLDS. I would love for a colab with Sam and Eskel Grant about their shared experiences growing up in a cult and both leaving at age 18.
Thank you so much for the Super! Eskel recently reached out and we are hoping to do a collab with him soon!
The 4th episode was mind blowing! It made me question some of the things In the documentary that was previously reviewed.
It was such a different and interesting perspective for sure!
Apart from the heartbreaking story, I've noticed that all ex-FLDS I've seen and heard so far are very eloquent with a very clear diction, and you are just like that. Congratulations for speaking so well and clearly.
"One true church" is also a very common phrase in traditionalist Catholic circles.
I can remember going to what was referred to as a watch service growing up in the Apostolic Church..We would be there watching, and waiting until the New Year happened..I had PTS over this up until my mid 20s when it finally dawned on me that the New Year had already happened on the other side of our big planet and that I didn't have to wait and watch for the end of the world to happen..I know this sounds crazy but I would be in knots every December 31 until the New Year had been rang in and then it would switch back to just living in the last days 🙄
So great you are joining the Mormon Story Group for a around table discussion on the topic. It is wonderful that they will have someone with your intimate view of the FLDS. Please make sure you share the very valid point that mentioned in this video which is so many of the members were just trying to live what they understood the gospel to be and we not part of the horrors that Warren Jeffs and his inner circle perpetuated.
Thank you! We are excited to share our unique perspective, and will definitely be reiterating that point.
I found the documentary so interesting, thank you for your comments on it, I look forward to seeing your other videos on the other parts of the documentary. Xx
Incredible. Thank you for sharing.
Debbie Steed wrote a song called something like, He Shall Be Renewed. They even sent out the words and music to each family so everyone could sing and memorize the song. It was about Rulon Jeffs renewal. I remember Naomi and Nephi getting up in general meeting and testified of Warren being the prophet. I was not close family.
Having lived (lol as a Jew) in an EXTREMELY small FDLS town in UT, near Bryce Canyon, it's incredibly refreshing to hear your conversations
That's hopefull to me for the little kids still growing up there
Thanks & Love
So excited have watched all your videos in a week loving the content. Love from Scotland 🏴
You two never disappoint in delivering an interesting new video! It may also be fun if you would film yourself watching an episode of this series, so we can witness those reactions you were talking about. You could pause and comment in between. No matter how, until next time! Anna
Thank you so much! We are trying to figure out a way to do a reaction live without getting flagged for copyright. =)
Very painful to see what these children went through, both girls and boys. Loved your comments.
So glad you are doing Mormon Stories! I did ask!
Thank you so much! We are excited!
I just watched the whole documentary a few days ago and the whole time I was wondering what Sam would have thought about it hahaha. I was blown away by how much footage they had and am so curious how they managed to find it all
I’m so happy for you both that you got out Blessings to you and your family❤❤
hey Sam & Melissa , Sound is perfect now . I am really enjoying all the documentaries coming out as well .
Thank you so much!
I watched that whole series on Saturday. I mistakenly thought that you had spoken about this one but then I realised that you were speaking about another one. Sadly I can't get Preaching Evil because it's not available on Peacock in the UK (yet).
I binge watched the whole series was crazy!! I was wondering if your sister was in the photo with all the wives I remembered you had said she was a wife! Did your sister then become warren Jeff’s wife? Wow waking up every morning to warren singing! Wish we could watch your reactions while watching the episodes!
She was in the picture at Rulons funeral where all the wives were in white. After Rulon died, she was remarried to one of Warren's brothers.
I've been watching a really obscure channel with some amazing footage from festivals/parades from the late eighties in the Short Creek area, it truly looks like a paradise.. Lots of dancing and showing allegiance to the flag, with veterans making speeches and lots and lots of well behaved and beautifully dressed children all taking turns to look after one another.
Sam you are remarkably sane and grounded having survived such an upbringing.
Very interesting epizode :) i noticed you guys have new mics - now you sound like profesional radio hosts! Waiting for new videos, byeee ☺️
being ex flds everyone was told to get rid of everything pictures and videos but some of us rebellious ones kept that stuff! I have mine and my ex husbands families home videos!
I hurried and watched the whole series when you guys mentioned you were going to react. I totally thought of Sam’s sister the first episode and wondered if she was in the picture! The whole series was pretty hard to watch, I had to turn off the sound and read subtitles on the final episode. My heart just goes out to everyone- the women/children victims of Warren but also the whole community who enabled Warren by donating and obeying so he could have free reign to abuse and control.
It is so so sad because as Sam shares these are people who love their families and are trying to live good lives. I think it would be shattering to be so betrayed and I understand why many won’t investigate.
I just watched the 1st episode with my mom on Monday evening, so it was fascinating to hear your thoughts and perspective. My mom said that something in Warren's eyes looked really creepy.
We see that now. Being raised to believe that he was a great spiritual leader, I never once thought of him as creepy, but now I can see it.
There is NO DOUBT that Warren has a creepy look in his eyes - he also has a creepy voice!! Just plain creepy guy - serious mental health issues and a mean spirit!
I’ve always been so curious if Sam recognizes friends or family in any of the shows/documentaries etc. I bet it is so odd seeing it on tv being picked apart when it was just your normal growing up.
This story has intrigued me for over a decade
After watching your youtube blog on Keep sweet etc, I want straight on Netflix and watched it all 4 episodes. I am sobbing I feel so heart broken for those little girls and their mothers. I want to see that Evil man die. I was converted to LDS in the early 80's and really truely believed it hook line and sinker, until I went to the Temple. Within a week of actually going through the Temple I walked away from LDS. I realised none of it was true. I have to admit sometimes I was really scared for my salvation. Now the CES letter and other things came to light I am no longer scared. I love your channel and can not wait to see you both on Morman Stories.
I'm so glad you're no longer afraid!
I'm glad you figured it out for yourself when you went to the temple.
i think the first time a man ever told me to keep sweet i would punch him in the face.
This is all so unreal. God bless you
Appreciate this valuable insight from you both, would consider maybe setting up a camera to film you while watching it on your tv and including some of the reactionary footage in your next sit down recap?
That's what we are going to try for part 2 this week.
@@GrowingUpinPolygamy yay!
I'm a brazillian woman and I saw this doc. on Netflix. I can't even imagine to go through what you did, and I just want to say that you are very brave to have left that place and I really hope you have been liviving a beautiful life as free people. And I really hope this "religion" ends some day and everybody sees its true colors and leave. Peace and love to you.
Just wow to the Documentary, growing up in Europe and Catholic I can not imagen how the life was. I am glad that you got out. I lost my faith for a long time slowly going back-
I love this documentary, it's so good.
Sam ,when I started watching this documentary and saw the 4th of July, I was like " oh so this is the huge celebration that he was talking about "
Great analysis and i really respect what u both are doing! How tf can people keep on believing all this BS W. Jeffs promised would happen and NOTHING did actually come to pass???
I wanted more from a 4 part series. The moving people around the country like Rachel Jeffs explained, not enough about the lost boys.
There is so much to cover, that I feel like each documentary just tries to cover a few select people's experiences at a time. Manti's story talks a lot about being moved around a ton like Rachel.
It's like when I hear Prophet Gordon B. Hinkley. He was prophet when I joined. I was once at a friend's house that was big with an intercom. I thought it was the coolest thing ever!!
Under the Banner of Heaven series!!
Cannot wait for mormon stories Podcast I have been plugging you guys to Doctor John Dehlin!
Aww thank you so much!
I just saw the documentary and am so shocked. Cults are so disgusting and manipulative, mostly old men missusing their power...I am so happy that more and more members wake up! Much love from germany! ✨
Hello. I have just started watching you two within the last 2 weeks. I am obsessed. I have watched the documentary and read a few books. I have so many questions.
1- did your sister that was married to Rulon marry Warren afterwards?
2- Did you know Rachel Jeff’s?
3- Are the families close within the community?
I will start with these questions. Thank you for your time and insight.
In reply to another comment he said that his sister married one of Warren’s brothers
I've run across Mormon Stories here on CZcams, most of the time though their videos are really long. I'm having a good day. I spent some time with mom.
came to this channel after the show!
Welcome!
Thank you both. Sam, you may have answered this- but I'm very interested in how long it took for you to become whole, "normal" or deprogrammed. Watching how easily young people are brainwashed these days on tik tok and other social media it disturbs and worries me. You seem content and able to separate yourself from the world of flds. I commend you for your courage in facing it and walking away. May God bless you both.
This has crossed my mind a few times. Do you know whatever happened to the father's that Warren Jeffs sent away and kept from their original 👪 families. Did they ever find where they were staying and did they ever reunite.🤔
Yess I’m interested in what happened to them too. Did the women who left get to talk to their dad
Omg are you guys going to be a mormon stories podcast, that would be amazing!?
Yes we are. We just finished filming with them and our interview should be released within the next week. =)
I watched the whole documentary and had so many questions at the end. What happened to the boys who were kicked out of the community? Why didn't that get the attention of child protection services? Does LDS reach out to former FLDS members?
Thanks for sharing your experience, I will stay tuned for the next videos!
So this is actually a well known issue in the area. Many of the boys are termed lost boys. But also, many of them are not kicked out until they are 18
They sadly often end up homeless and or drug abusers or dead. The show escaping polygamy talks about lost boys and even helps some escape or some of their family escape.
There’s a great documentary called Sons of Perdition that follows a few boys who either ran away or were kicked out, and what happens to them. Long story short they fall into the system, but the system is flawed and most have nowhere to go plus lots of trauma and turn to drugs and alchohol
Having been born and raised in a similar same type of cult, which destroyed my entire life and family. The damage from cults never leaves and sadly you loose everything. It's very real and this is happening even now in todays day and age to people just down your street....
Mr.Wall does not seem to be too upset about the whole young girl situation. He married off his daughter to the old Jeffs and was truly honored. The only thing he seemed to be bothered by was the fact he didn't get three wifes which is the bare minimum you need to go to the kingdom in heaven.
He did get his third wife after trading his daughter for one! They showed the wedding picture in the doc. He wasn’t concerned about any of the oppressive, toxic aspects of his group, he drew the line when Warren Jeffs took away his guns!
Horrible man!
@@fehyndana7725 Exactly! He got #3 so he did not care much about what happened to his daughters or other girls.Listening to his daughter describe her "religious" experience with Rulon on their wedding night makes my skin crawl.I do not care that these people were raised this way....it was his daughter!!
Great video!
Have you read the book “Educated” by Tara Westover? It’s about a family that has some Extreme LDS beliefs. It might be an interesting read and your view in it would be cool to hear.
We haven't hear of it, but will add it to our list!
Most of it is embellished.
Yes, it is a great book!
Yes! It is a great book!!
@@Lemonade_Stand_ you were in her family? Wondering why you'd claim her fact-checked memoir is "embellished" otherwise?
I was one of the ones who suggested you guys for Mormon Stories Podcast. Looking forward to it! May I ask one thing that's kind of messing with my head. Can you please fix the focus on your camera? Either it's not focused or the lens is dirty.
Thank you so much! We can't wait for our interview to come out within the next week or so. We are also looking into the camera issue. =)
Can you do a review of the mini series Under the Banner of Heaven? I would love to hear what you guys think of that! It goes into so much LDS history and I am wondering how much of it is real and how much is embellished for TV
You should check out the book of the same name by Jon Krakauer, a wonderful non-fiction writer. The reasons for and perpetrators of the murders are, unfortunately, true. But the characters of Brother Pyle and his parter Bill are fictitious - compilations of various police involved on the case.
I'm native-canadian from Nova Scotia, Canada. While watching the documentary? I could only imagine what it was like when the government came in and took the children away. It made me sad knowing that the generation before me had this happen to them, a traumatic experience that nobody should endure.
Years ago i visited my sister in law who lived in apple valley. She took us for a drive to colorado city. I was astonished when i saw the houses. There were no windows. Why was that?
