Dripping Shiny Cave Paludarium

  • I came across an awesome stone (Glitter Rock) while I was at Aquaschella a few weeks back. I was only able to fit a few pieces in my luggage, so I had to keep the build on the small side. I also don't believe it would've been a safe option for livestock.
It was definitely giving me cave vibes. So, I went with that as my theme and I think I came up with a pretty cool project. What do you think? Let me know in the comment!

Really awesome! But fyi that rock is a type of volcanic sand stone you can use it in aquariums no problem itll just slowly degrades through abrasion etc and turns to sand. 👍

@@jessethomas4777 i dunno the official name. But ive used it before in a stocked fish tank no problem. Its a bit weird cos it like does degrade over time but not through chemical process if you clean it or scrub it youll notice it creates sandy dust.

@@jessethomas4777 it’s not mica, the shiny parts of mica are flakier (?). like small flat surfaces instead of glittery specks, if that makes sense. i was a weird (and autistic) geology-obsessed child and my favorite rock was mica lol.
okay edit: i was wrong, it probably is mica. i found my favorite rock sample (of mica) and it looks just like that. i got mixed up with pyrite, which is what i described. oops.

If you ever want to do a hardscape that sparkles that is animal safe I recently found black diamond granite at my fish store. It took forever to identify the rock. I knew it was a granite with it's rust red striations and cold steel blue. It is really very pretty but what makes it special are the mica flecks in the blue striations. They really glisten under the lights of an aquarium. I tested them for over a week to see if they changed water quality and they showed inert. They've been in my 20 for a couple months now running with fish eating off of them and happy.

I looks good an gives small fishes and shrimp shelter and hiding places. And of course removes nitrates and nitrites from the water column. But how do you keep the duckweed from taking over the whole surface? I manually remove duckweed from time to time so that the fluorescent lamps can provide light to other plants
