  • When playing Death Stranding, I could not help but notice several similarities between the concepts in the game and the concepts I have presented in my "Silent Hill Mythology" series. I put out this observation on Twitter, and other people seemed to agree. Let me know what you guys think!

I did had another 1 or 2 more of those dreams after but I wasn't able to do a thing, maybe because most of the time I'm not really that involved on those scenarios - more like an observer.

    Insightful.
Death Stranding is about the "connections" you do in your life, and how you can improve others (and yourself) by doing new "(connections) strands" or redoing "strands" that somehow got damaged.
It is important to note that the more "damaged" a connection to another soul is, more and more your unconscious mind will manifest a synchronicity with that "strand" that is affecting you so clearly. Therefore, you get the consequences of Silent Hill: Thought "manifested", a journey until you repair that "strand" inside you (and then outside you), in order to stop your mind (or soul) to consume itself.
To me, Silent Hill is not about "multiverses", but just another thing: "another reality", one inside the mind of each protagonist of the game. And as you stated, Silent Hill is just a "middle ground", where those minds gather (a dream) in order to repair those "strands" that got damaged, by good situations (dreams) or by evil coercion (nightmares). But, Silent Hill is a nightmare, it is a controlled torment where you are the tormented and the tormentor.
And so, by giving us Death Stranding, Kojima-san finally completed his thoughts on the subject: Whatever you do, to someone or to yourself, matters! Because your actions have consequences, both inside your mind and "in the real world", so instead of pushing each other apart, we all should be striving to make "new strands", strands that connects us to each other, because ONE person can end several "strands", easily.
And the price we pay, personally, for each strand that is severed, is torment. Is Silent Hill.
Death Stranding is the journey we should go through, to make connections. To make "strands".
Silent Hill is the price we pay if we cut the ones we have and refuse to do new ones.
I wonder if Kojima-san has another game in wait, to show us his idea about the "reward" of such journey, since he already gave us the price and the journey...

The most notable experience with synchronicity I had was when I was deciding numbers for a lottery. It was about 10 minutes before the draw closed and I had to pick 7 numbers. When trying to think of numbers, I decided to close my eyes and out of nowhere 3 numbers came to me. I tried to allow other random numbers to enter my mind but they just wouldn't - it's hard to describe but I could feel the thought process of picking the other 4. When the results came in later that night all 3 of the numbers that appeared out of nowhere were correct while the other 4 weren't. A brief connection with the near future? Or just a coincidence...

third comment cus i have to: my entire experience with the Silent Hill series as a kid was one long episode of Synchronicity. I felt like I had to split off the happy piece of myself to survive my situation and then having that put in front of my face at age 13 made me realize that it was a totally valid and human experience and that the human mind is capable of incredible things in order to survive....
    keep on keeping on, Max

Amazing as always, for the last bit about your experience of synchronicity, I've actually felt the same way, it was a weird kinda deja Vu feeling when you started to talk about it and hearing how eerily close that sounds.
Also, for anyone who's played Morrowind, I wonder if there's some sort of Chim in SH or Death stranding, the acknowledgement that you are indeed in the dream, and since you're a living being in a dream, you know you have control over it, if you're able to handle that mentally.

You are usually taught to write what you know because then it is easier to write and more valid. He already looked into death and nightmare concepts with SH and thus used those ideas for something new.

This is interesting, but it's commonly known that Jung didn't find a Golden Scarab beetle at the window, he found a smaller common beetle that has a greenish gold colouring, a Scarabaeid Beetle (so known because it resembles a Scarab).
The point in Jung was not that the beetle was manufactured by her subconscious, but rather that he utilised the coincidence to show the beetle to his patient, which made her more receptive to further questioning and openness.

Synchronicity is fun to think about but it seems like the mind making sense of real events while sleeping or in deep thought. Such as: falling asleep with the TV on and having a dream fashioned based on what you hear in the real world.

After watching your videos, now I understand that I interacted with itos unconscious thoughts that he brought into the conscious world, and now it effects my unconscious thoughts, for example the nightmares I had after playing silent hill 2 as a child. Answering your final question on the sinchronicity subject, i believe the way you felt validated trough Heartman's dialogue wasn't just a coincidence. It was memes, the dna of the soul. If someone like Kojima, writter and director of Death Stranding, fell compelled enough to want to illustrate a similar concept to your early idea of religion trough a script, then it seems natural to me that you, as well as many people, were suceptible to a similar idea to begin with. It's just the way memes work.

There’s an entire channel dedicated to finding similarities (or synchronicities, if you will) between Silent Hill and Death Stranding, called PythonSelkan. They’ve found some pretty interesting stuff. The one that still puzzles me is the muffled mention of "umbilical chord" in P.T.’s radio broadcast.
I think the fact that a woman named Lisa is killed off after giving birth to Sam Bridges is very symbolic of how Death Stranding was born out of Silent Hills’ cancellation, and I’m sure you’re onto something with your theory of Beaches and Hills (although the Beach concept is a little more pleasant).
I don’t think the connections go too much further though, since the vast majority of Death Stranding is built around the concept of human connection and cooperation. Then again, so was P.T. in a way with how it intentionally brought players together to solve its mysteries.

The effect it had on all of us is an interesting psychological case study in itself. Glad to have been part of it.

  • @SonoftheDarkLordMarz7467

I very much believe the same way you do, that what people believe, is where they will go in death. I think there’s something beautiful in that, but our minds are very powerful things, and it’s not far fetched at all that that is happening. It’s nice to know that I am not the only one that feels this way

12:21 you aren't the only one with this thought. There is a specific section of a manga called shaman king where there is this tornado of souls. As I understood it, the philosophical foundation is discussed in the "Problem of universals". Whether Synchronicity exists or not is more or less a question of taste. And nobody will ever be able to proof one side over the other.
When synchronicity is a real phenomenon, then we must postulate a hidden realm of reality and we could say, we want to explore this realm in the best way possible. And this approach was the dominant one throughout history.
Summarized, I think there have been 3 Stages, wich show the shift in the problems of universals in science:
    1. Schamanism, Oracles, realm of gods and ghosts etc.
    2. Alchemy
    3. Modern Science
Modern science brought us technology and medicine that works. And the method they use doesn't require any form of ghost and mysticism.
Today this feels like a question of being for it or against it. But don't forget, only because modern science uses its method so succesfully, it does not mean, that there are no possible insights in the other areas I mentioned.
But we will never have proof.

I've personally had several synchronicity experiences. A few shared, most by myself.
I don't belive in fate nor precognition per se, and although I wasn't aware of Jung's theory, I agree that there may be a some sort of "spill" from our subconcious into our reality. At least our perceived reality.
And I think that's what Silent Hill has always been about. It left many breadcrumbs along the entire saga. It was just never stated like that outright.
Great video. Glad to find a grounded and documented theory. I do hope Kojima eventually create a full horror game in the Silent Hill universe.

I've been seeing synchronicity between QTF and religions (both east and west) in a striking way.
