    Here are my responses to two common criticisms expressed toward this video.
    #1: "Why are you applying Jung's theories when the game developers don't reference him?"
    Hiroyuki Owaku, the main story designer for the original Silent Hill games, has said that he has taken inspiration from psychoanalytic theories, specifically Freud's (CITATION: Book of Lost Memories, Page 77). Seeing that Jung was a student of Freud, and expanded upon Freud's theories greatly, I have a hard time believing that Owaku only gave his sole attention to Freud, especially since other aspects of the game draw upon so many other sources. For instance, the mythology in Silent Hill draws heavily from Christian, Jewish, Egyptian and Aztec religious tradition. Given the fact that Jung actually took religion seriously in his work - whereas Freud considered religion to be a human creation used to stave off death anxiety - and the fact that Jung's theories seem to apply themselves so well to Silent Hill, I can't simply rely on Freud.
    #2: "Vincent was just joking around with Heather when he said 'They look like monsters to you'".
    Silent Hill's monsters and environments change appearance based on the person perceiving them.
    - "[Valtiel's] form is also seen differently depending on the person." (CITATION: Book of Lost Memories, Page 110)
    - Hiroyuki Owaku suggests that maybe the monsters don't look like monsters to everybody, or change form depending on who is perceiving them (CITATION: Book of Lost Memories, Page 102)

    I can't help but think when people talk about the way Silent Hill behaves and how people are "unaware" that they're dreaming, they forget about those who ARE aware of their dreams.
    Would they hold a stronger influence over SH? There's also the fact that Silent Hill practically demands the "victims" to have darkness in their hearts. There is nothing but evil found in SH, as characters like Laura are completely unaffected, since she's just an ordinary child (unlike Alessa).

      The silent hill series is weird for me because the games whenever I play them.. aren't very scary. At least silent hill 2 isn't scary.. like at all. Silent hill 3 is a different story however, it can make me uncomfortable, tense, and it's gotten some genuine scares outta me. Anyways it's a weird series because silent hill games themselves aren't scary while you're playing them, but they are scary when you're not playing them. The implication of these stories, the idea of silent hill, how occult knowledge often links back to these games perfectly.. that's the scary part. The thought of a place where your unconscious mind/subconscious can actively affect the world around you is kind of insane. The idea that we already have access to the metaphysical world and that not everything can be explained rationally. That's perhaps what scares me the most, now when some weird stuff happens I hesitate to call it coincidence or blame it on something else, mostly because of what I've learned and how much sense it makes.

    Dear Mr Derrat, another facet you may wish to consider is that, it is generally well accepted that the original Silent Hill was heavily influenced by the film 'Jacob's Ladder'. Some argue that SH is in fact little more than a homage to that film. If so then this would strengthen your theory as, (Spoiler Alert) the very similar manifestations of demons and warped hellish overlays into the reality seen in ''Ladder turn out to be a pre-death dream or purgatory. Not a parallel universe but an inner-verse made real. It seems plausible that SH continued this theme.

      Jacobs Ladder is based on the very real mind control experiments by the CIA though (MKUltra). The movie explicitly says that at the end, and it's also mentioned in a deleted scene. It's very loosely based on a group of US Army guys that were experimented on against their will, and later sued because they were left pretty messed up. The experiments later resulted in the US torture programs (ie. Guantanamo Prison scandal).

      I think SH is set in the purgatory (supposedly dead people stay there for a while before going to hell or heaven) in Christian mythology that doesn't exist tho.
      I also think SH borrowed a lot from Jacob's ladder movie, so this purgatory is kinda a judgement trial and makes sense for most characters since most die or kill themselves. However there are few cases where live persons go there voluntarily (worshipers of evil) like Dalia that presumably sold their soul but they get killed eventually anyway and most likely they are in some sort of astral trip mode.

    8:31 - I have no idea why I said Leonard Wolf when I meant Vincent Smith. xD MY BAD.
    BTW, some people are pointing out the fact that Vincent says he is only joking to Heather after he says: "they look like monsters to you?" I don't happen to think he's joking, but let's say hypothetically that he is joking: okay, I cited a bad example, but my original point is still correct. For example...
    In respect to Pyramid Head, the Book of Lost Memories highly suggests that he takes on different forms. I think it was Walter Sullivan who said that he saw Pyramid Head as a "red demon". Correct me if I'm wrong. But anyways, a better example... the nurses take on a different look in all three games, and that greatly depends upon the protagonist you play as.
    Even if Vincent is just joking, there is ample evidence to suggest that the "monsters" that roam Silent Hill aren't perceived as monsters by all. Laura from SH2 doesn't seem to be phased by any of the "monsters" roaming around. Plus, if the "monsters" are all manifested elements of one's subconscious, why should she see them as monsters? As for Claudia and Vincent, if they worship the same God, I imagine doing so makes the "monsters" seem a lot less grotesque to them than they do to people like Heather. There's even that comment by Vincent where he says something to the effect that Devils and Gods are the same, depending on how you look at it. If he's worshipping "God" (an evil being who might as well be the devil), no kidding he isn't as phased by their appearance.

      @WebCamParrot Před 6 lety +6

      I mean you kinda took the quote out of context anyway since Vincent is basically just fucking with Heather in that scene and literally admits that right after. SH3 isn't even related to the mind of those in it like SH2 was. The unborn god inside Heather is twisting the real world into it's hellish state. Where do you even get off claiming that Jung's work is in anyway related to the SH games. Did someone from team silent list it as an inspiration?

    • @maxderrat
      @maxderrat  Před 6 lety +9

      Hey! Thanks for taking the time to comment!
      I replied to the first part of your comment in an edit I did to my original post. As for "claiming that Jung's work is in anyway related to the SH games", I actually didn't claim that it's related. ;) Follow me here...
      I don't even think it's out of the realm of possibility that the original leads at Team Silent never read anything by Jung... but they wouldn't have had to in my opinion.
      I think what's great about Jung is that his distillation of mythology and how it works helps us to see patterns in several different works. For example, Jung's theories regarding the shadow, the anima and the animus, and synchronicity work remarkably well in the context of Silent Hill. BUT, that's just one of many mythological works that use these patterns. The encounter with the shadow is an event that occurs in everything from Apocalypse Now to Digimon. :P
      Even if Team Silent never heard of Jung, don't you think it's remarkable how well the concepts of "synchronicity" and "the encounter with the shadow" work in the context of a Silent Hill game? That's all I was trying to point out. And I wanted to point that out because I think it helps give us a greater appreciation for the psychological depths the games go to.
      Cheers. :)

    9:40 To lucid dreamers, we call this the dreamscape or hub. It is a bit of a “middle ground” that allows us to achieve consciousness within our sleeping state, to explore and manipulate the world around us. With training, one can slow or increase the way in which time is experienced in this realm. I have experienced what has felt like years and even life times within that place, pondering many aspects of life or just taking the time to enjoy what peace I could find. Oddly enough, one constant among lucid dreamers is the presence of a shadowy figure. For most it seems to be a silhouette of themselves, other times it is of an individual they know. In cases where it is a visage of themselves, I often find that such individuals have suffered or are suffering sometimes severe cases of self hatred. I had always shrugged it off as a manifestation of the inner self hatred, that inner voice that critiques, but with the introduction of this idea and the depiction of silent hill, there may be some connection.

      I lucid dream and the shadowy figures are my friend(s), they are nice and some are just there to chill and watch you and touch you because they are curious about who you are or what you do. Earlier in life, since I recognized them I thought they were out to get me I would lunge at them but they just scare easily and they don't want to fight. They just want to get away and not be seen or touched even though that's what they do to you. Now reading about what "evil" and "mean" things they have done to people on their own dreams, I just dont believe. I know tht sometimes people say that they are bad but even after reading that again and again I've never encountered one that was cruel, they are instead scared of me... • @ThogTheBoss
      @ThogTheBoss Před rokem

      This stuff is really interesting. I've had a few dreams/nightmares where I was lucid and it included the presence of a shadowy figure. Here is a brief and rough summary of this lucid nightmare I had a while back that has stuck with me ever since:
      Many of my dreams and nightmares consist of me being chased by a shadowy figure. In one of my own dreams there was this shadowy figure that killed people whenever I was around and whenever I attempted to claim my innocence and tell the people the killer was the demon, the demon would show up and kill them too causing a loop where I would be the suspect but I am not able to prove my own innocence. If I could describe its appearance, the figure was very tall and lanky, about 15ft tall. It was a man with a flat-brimmed hat with four symmetrically-pinched dents in the crown as well as a shotgun of some sorts. Whenever he'd shoot someone they would be obliterated since the gun was proportional to the size of the man. When it came to the rest of its appearance, the appearance was mostly vague, I could only see its silhouette, except for a face I could barely make out. If I could describe its face, it would be like looking at a very old vintage photograph where the lighting is off. To better describe this, it was like if a century old camera was used and there was a flashlight being pointed from below, pointing up at the man's face.
      I am not sure if this adds on to anything, but in the dream I gained lucidity towards the end of the dream and was able to "wake up", however, this was a false awakening since I was still dreaming. I only truly woke up when the shadow figure showed up to my room to finally kill me. Also, the dream's atmosphere was very cold and dark. Most of the settings were familiar places, like my high school, except with no people and it was dark. The only unfamiliar place was this dark forest with dead trees and snow that was sort of lit up by moonlight. If you were to watch what I was seeing you could feel the darkness creeping up and the cold chills.
      One last thing to consider from the dream, I had an old friend that was always there and he was guiding me up until my false awakening. He was the one that helped me gained lucidity by telling me it was just a dream and there was nothing to be afraid of. Although I knew he was my friend, his identity was unknown to me. I just simply knew he was an old friend of mine.
      I kind of wanted to add a little bit of insight into this weird dream of mine. Sorry if this was too lengthy or cringe. I was just trying to be as descriptive as possible. One of the stranger things I realized was that old friend of mine kind of reminded me of the wise old man in Jungian psychology. He was the one that led me into the unfamiliar forest that was slightly lit by moonlight and was the one who told me that I shouldn't be afraid since I was dreaming since I was running away from the figure in fear with my old friend.

    have never been so satisfied watching a Silent Hill analysis.
    To give you a little background, I'm a Psychology student, heavily influenced by the work of Carl Jung. In the journey that it is to study Psychology in its different theories, I'd say Jung's is the one that comes the closest to how I perceive reality. So I find myself constantly studying his work and the work of his sucessors, as well as trying to come up with my own theories regarding the world.
    On the other hand, I am an enormous Silent Hill fan exactly for the deal of symbolism this games brings to me. This game expresses symbols better than any other game I have ever played. (Of course, reffering to the first 4). And I have always tried to bring Silent Hill to the actual Psychology field (at one point, I even considered making it the work of my ungraduate thesis. I've always understood Silent Hill as a manifestation of these layers of the human psyche and individuation brought through the facing of one's unconscious, within the roles of complexes, symbols and, of course, the archetypes. But, I have no idea why, the idea of Synchronicity never crossed my mind, until you presented me this video. As I see your video, things make much more sense into my head. And my understanding of the possibilities of analysis for Silent Hill, and, as incredibly as it seems, my understanding regarding the inumerous possibilities of human symbolism grew considerably.

    Interesting: I wonder how this relates to Silent Hill 4, where "The Room" and the world attached to it are all part of a mass dream constructed by Walter. (People from our world, including the main hero, are pulled into the dream world when they go to sleep.) The emphasis in that story is less on each individual character's experience and more on how the symbolism of the dream world ties in to Walter and his early life.

    • @Shivanshu25
      @Shivanshu25 Před 5 lety

      Silent hill 4 is not very much connected to the main lore of the main silent hill, as it's more connected to black magic and cult rather than your own inner demons.
      That's why silent hill 1 & especially 2 are called masterpiece.
      While in sh2, its so vaguely explained, that every individual can make his own explaining of silent hill.
      In case of this video, the main creator of the game wouldn't even know about this theory before creating this game.

    The funny thing is the application of imagery in "dreams" and the equivalent interpretation in the real world does have its own form of synchronicity.
    In my own personal experience, I dreamt for 5 months the same dream of a "giant wave" hitting myself and those I hold dear while stood at a beach, the wave was much akin to the one seen in the movie Interstellar, impending and overwhelming. I always awoke from my dream when the wave hit me.
    In real life, not much soon after, I lost my job and my marriage completely failed, affecting my kids and life as a result.
    Upon inspection towards the Fruedian method of dream interpretation many monthes later when engrossed in the symbolism of why the dream, was, what it was. I found that the "wave" was a subconscious attempt at giving me fair warning to the affected parallel of real life.
    (Dream = Wave = Impending destruction VS Real = Destroyed marriage/loss of job)
    To my surprise, dreams as a form of synchronicity, even if used in the context of premonition, linked my dream to what actually happened not too soon after in my own little life.
    The strangest part for me is, since I had those dreams of the "wave of infinite height hit me", lost my job, marriage, etc. I have not once had the same dream ever since and I have since had others which I interpret using online "dream bibles", each with it's own interpretation and certain...clairvoyance...
    I consider myself normal by anyones standards, but this video found me rethinking of the terrifying application of certain theories and why the nature of the universe is what it is...even if it is Silent Hill lol
    Has anyone else experienced what I've described?

  • @philosophyversuslogic

    I always have dreams of someone, they're always blurred, or undefined, telling me something or how things will happen, and I always forget the greater details of the dream, but when I do receive the message or thing said in the dream, it comes back to me and I remember it, and I shut down trying to comprehend what just happened, I even have these dreams when im just day dreaming. It's strange. And the messages are always different, sometimes it's about something important, other times it's just something my wife will say to me. They always have something to do with my average everyday life though, so I wouldn't say they're spiritual, but something psychological.

    Yeah, the fog world is like a transition dimension built upon a collective consciousness, and somewhat mirror the town that exists in the real world, and could be coloured by different perspectives. And the Other worlds are when you slip into one deeper into worlds that influenced by different psyche.
    The fog world itself may be within the dream of the town, and it is there that you can slip into another dream (nightmare), and things from dreams can slip into. Such things appearing differently to different people.

    As much as I love Owaku’s work on SH2. I still prefer 1, 3 and 4 over it, cuz it focuses on the order and the origin of the corruption of the spiritual power of the town. Also, SH2 became the blueprint for every game past 4,( maybe 5, but it still has the emotional baggage aspect involved.) 1 and 3 centers around the Cult and it’s monsters reflect the deepest recesses of Alessa, Cheryl and Heather’s psyche. After Heather defeated “God” in SH3, that should have cleansed the town of corruption, returning it to it’s once peaceful form. 4 focused on another ritual, (Dahlia’s plan A) to bring about the descent of the Cult’s god and that’s fine.

    Great theory my friend... I think you are right in terms of the monsters being manifestations of a person's mind and I think the spiritual power of the town is what makes it concrete to them... It's due to not having certain things clear that many developers after SH4 took the series on their own interpretation... For example Masahiro Iti creator of Pyramid Head was pissed that it's character was used on other non-related stories of the franchise and the respond was "Well there is a painting in which he appears as judger and executioner with people around hanging from boxes on they're heads" so it's basically either bad interpretation or just "he looks badass he needs to be here to sell"

  • @MegaBearsFan
    @MegaBearsFan Před 6 lety +33

    Except that if each individual's dreams exist on their own plane of existence, then no two people should have the same experience in Silent Hill ever. So Harry and Cybill wouldn't see the same monsters at all. James wouldn't experience Angela's Otherworld or the Abstract Daddy boss fight. etc...
    Also, Vincent's line of "They look like monsters to you?" doesn't necessarily mean that they see different things; rather that they may perceive the same thing in different contexts. Satanic imagery looks evil and "monstrous" to a Christian, but is holy and worthy of worship to a Satanist. Even though it's the same image, both groups perceive it in different contexts. Since Vincent grew up in the church, the monsters aren't "monsters" to him; they're probably "angels" or something like that.

      Right, but the thing is, it seems that sometimes people's worlds overlap. It rarely happens, like in the case of Silent Hill 2... but it sometimes does... like, with the example you cited, of Angela's abstract daddy.
      Remember, even though everybody has their individual consciousness, they are all part of one collective consciousness. They are all attached to the infinite void and ordered reality. Sometimes things overlap. :)

    • @lesteryaytrippy7282
      @lesteryaytrippy7282 Před 5 lety +8

      This Overlap could be symbolic of how the characters relate to one another to a degree, especially since they're in Silent Hill. Also, and especially with Silent Hill 2, the Overlap happens when there's an emotional/psychological connection or understanding with another character. Silent Hill's most extreme Overlaps occured in Silent Hill 4, where the room is a physical, mental and emotional connection of/to Walter and in Silent Hill Homecoming, where another town's historical ties to this God manifests through the different families. I could go on, but I will say I agree with the video.

    Like Overlook Hotel, the town is called souls to restore the energy drawned by Alessa. SH3 never explained how the power of the town can appears outside SH, in some way this is because Heather is alive, or because the god was inside her, but what if she is the god herself, that explained that the town needs her alive, this allow the power to exit the town, and appears in other places. Maybe that's the key of SH3, Heather broke a some kind of mystical barrier that forbidden the energy of the town to get out. SH3 is also the end of the cult.

    I was always under the impression that the multiple dimensions theory referred to the fact that Silent Hill 1 and 3, and 2 and 4 existed in separate realities. 1 and 3 take place in a universe where the cult is still in operation and the goings-on in Silent Hill are being directly influenced by it. 2 and 4 take place in a universe where the cult has since died off and Silent Hill has been left to rot, becoming sentient in a way, and calling out to miserable people in order to torment them. This is further illustrated by the different aesthetic qualities between 1/3 and 2/4's versions of the otherworld. 1 and 3's otherword appears rusty, burning, bloody, likely very hot, while 2 and 4's otherworlds are cold, filthy, damp and rotten.

    From my thoughts, Silent Hill is about delving into the human shadow and overcoming it. I like that you brought in Jung, perhaps you could have talked about Jung's idea of the shadow and overcoming the shadow.

    Several things that might interest you in regard of that video, aka two quotes and another work by carl jung.
    -One quote from the Dream of the Red chamber: "A tale of grief is told,
    fantasy most melancholy.
    Since all live in a dream,
    why laugh at others' folly?"
    The other one: "according to the Chinese philosophical classic Zhuangzi, the great Daoist thinker of that name fell asleep one day and dreamed that he was a butterfly. When he woke up, he did not know whether he really was a man who had dreamed he was a butterfly or whether he was a butterfly now dreaming he was a man.
    Now, what you're talking about, that dark part on your diagram, seems to correspond to what jung called the shadow self. I think you'd find it interesting. (Sorry if you mentionned it in the video and I missed it).

    Interesting explanation, but where does the Dark World fits? Like the School of SH1, its not the fog world (when you finish) nor the Otherworld (halfway there), is it a inbetween state?

    Did you know that synchronicity and serendipity are closely related?
    A branch off from the same tree.

    came here to discover more about silent hill and end up discovering that i've been living an extreme synchronicity in the past years lmao

    I don't believe it's synchronicity. I think it's just another case of "nothing is original, nothing is new, nothing hasn't been thought of by thousands, maybe millions of people before you".
    I had an idea for a story when I was a kid wherein dreams and reality were two physical realms existing side by side and when we entered one or the other our memories of the other world would be a foggy mirror to the reality we were in at the time.
    It sounds fancy, but in reality it was just 12 year old me going: omg, wouldn't it be cool if dreams were our second life?!
    I didn't know about Silent Hill at the time and I have experienced quite a few times that I come up with a concept for a story and then months or years later down the line I see that idea on a movie poster at the cinema. I especially remember being salty about Children of Men back when it was released to cinemas. It was pretty much exactly the same as a story I had been working on for a while, which is quite the coincidence :P

    If you shift the positioning of the circles it could look alot like the halo of the sun symbol. I always thought that the circles represented our demension, fog world and otherworld (dark world).

    I think it's just one of the conclusions that are hinted at through silent hill lore, whether intentional or not. It's not as though the other guy thought of what you thought of word for word, but he did think of a similar idea. It's not impossible to think of a parallel idea to someone who has absorbed the same stimuli as you and is focusing on it to think of some deeper meaning that may line up with yours. I just feel as though its very possible, especially with such a big game, for two people to come up with similar ideas, esspecially if you're actively seeking this sort of thing out.
