I love Mike Post. To me, he is the John Williams of TV.
Music is many things, and one of them is uncanny. When I hear the Rockford Files theme I am literally transported to my grandmothers house at age 8 or 9 years old on a Friday night - I see it, smell it and near it. Amazing.
Lee I said this before but knowing you played on Rockford Files makes my DAY/YEAR /LIFE.
My first car was essentially was because I loved the Firebird and the Theme song of Rockford FIles!!!!
I show up to look at my Firebird in the 80's and we had exchanged first names.......Both of which were the same and then when I agreed to buy it he tells me his last name........I say WHAT??????? He repeats it.
I said spell it please.......EXACTLY THE SAME. The car only had two owners with the exact same name for it's first two owners!!!!!!! We laughed so hard. I had to buy it. I still miss it to this day!!!!!!!!!
Hi, Lee. Mike tells the story of how Steven Bochco asked him to come up with a theme for a gritty police show but he wanted something that was "bittersweet" and sensitive to counter the edgy street feel. And apparently Steven said, "Don't go and pull something out of your "tricks" bag that you've already written. It's got to be original. So Mike said that he sat down at the piano and his hands just fell on the key of Eb and out it came. The Hill Street Blues theme was born.
I have all of the seasons of Hill Street and Rockford on DVD. The themes are two of my favorites. When the music for Hill Street starts and I see those police cars on the cold, wet streets of Chicago, it always gives me a chill and I think back to Thursday nights in my apartment in Indianapolis. A long time ago. I miss those days. Now when I hear it, I'll especially hear Leland's bass. Thanks.
A walk down memory lane! I love these tunes. Thanks Lee for being a huge part of the soundtrack for our favorite TV shows, as well!
Hill Street Blues and "Let's be careful out there" bring back memories, the theme is just perfect
The amazing part you can still see Joe Spano on NCIS
These songs were the soundtrack to my childhood. I remember getting a book of TV theme sheet music for piano: so many were by Post and/or Carpenter. True legends! Thanks for giving us a peek behind the curtain!
iconic recordings. I remember they were all hits on the radio when I was a kid. those were the days my friend. cheers all.
Good luck with the 'Post" 🤞 These tunes sure bring wonderful memories of these great shows 😎
That harmonica added so much to The Rockford Files theme. Tommy Morgan.
Beautiful! Thank you Leland❣️. It's fun to hear these scores in their entirety and recognize them immediately.
YEA!!!! NO BLOCKING!!
Until tomorrow, have a great day Lee.
Stay safe everyone 🤗 and have a Super rest of your Sunday 👍✌️😉☀️
This video brings back great memories of my childhood/teenage years. Thank you so much 😊 🙏
@Hans Peter Lillesøe Hi! Thanks for asking! I‘m fine. I guess you too? Regarding the Antonov: well, this is no surprise, it’s for the next pandemic starting in 2024 🤪😜🤪😜🤪
The Mike Post stuff is so classic now. There you are on all those punches right on the money.
So Far, So good (re-remaining unblocked!)
Your background in TV soundtrack work is as impressive as you background on hit records! Tese songs (an once you mentioned) are the literal soundtracks of our TV lives growing up (or older if not "Growing up"!)
From the list of players on these sessions it seems like between Mike Post and Gerald Wilson they probably kept at least half of the brass and woodwind community in LA session work employed!
I don't know why any body would block you for this, because the music was really great. One of my favorite open songs was the Greatest American Hero, wow what a wonderful voice even though it was a bit quirky. Thanks so much for sharing that and just the same have a nice day.
Hill street blues..what a great piece of music. Played so beautifully by everyone.👍
Thank you, Mr. Sklar, for this episode. One of the things that I always loved about a Mike Post theme was the bridge that was never heard on the show but that made the songs so fully-realized. “Rockford Files” will always be my favorite. I appreciate knowing you were part of it.
Warms my heart that you played on the theme to Hill Street Blues. Still the greatest tv show. Ever 😊
Definitely a trip down memory lane. Thanks for "posting" Nice to hear the complete themes.
So much love for this stuff. Just part of a balanced diet of incredible musical influences.
I love “Hunter” and I love “The Rockford Files”! I watch Hunter every weeknight! I’m actually watching it right now coincidentally!
Works for Me!Lol.Great show that has aged well.
So glad it didn't get blocked here in Germany because we love these series and the music by Mike Post. Thanks so much for the insight! Now we'll watch the repetitions of the series and listen to this music with a different perspective! 🤩
Rockford Files. My Dad, Brother and I would never miss an episode!
Unreal, some of my favorite themes..Post is a fabulous composer…had no idea that you were on the songs other than Rockford. Rockford theme is such a part of my youth. Thanks for a very cool trip down memory lane. Great to speak with you yesterday. Stay safe🖕
Man, you guys really gelled in the studio! They just don't make music like you guys did back then.
I fondly recall:
Music by
Mike Post & Pete Carpenter
Guaranteed to be good!
Hi Lee! Lovely to see you. I remember hearing the Mike Post video before it was removed. It's so good - let's hope the CZcams police don't annoyingly interfere and take it down! Wow, these tunes take me back to my childhood - such great music - and shows.
On a good bit of this stuff Dan Ferguson, as well as Larry Carlton, played guitar. Always exciting to hear! I was lucky to do an NBC Midnight Special with Dan in the house band. He was playing the same guitar that he soloed with on the Rockford theme. Fun memories.
Gosh I love Magnum P.I. As music as well as the tv show, I’m so lucky to live in Hawai’i , great post Leland !!!
The Hill Street Blues theme is one of my all-time favorites. Fun bass part to play too.
Thank you for all of the magic you participated in - it suddenly occured to me you and your compatriots were responsible for much of the fuel for my inspiration to play guitar , harmonica and now keyboard ( it's a little tricky)
these themes are part of my youth particularly Rockford & ' Magnum - Sanford & Son & of course Barney Miller - were favorites - but the one that really affected me was Rockford Files - the harmonica is beautiful , I think
& I'm so happy to be learning it - never too late -
Thanks Mike Post - y'all touched my inner being with a feeling descriptive not applicable to my limited vocabulary - all I know is I wanted to be able to join in on this harmonious gift from above - thanks to the Lord ,Elvis & Ray Charles
I can sing pretty good -
I heard it….and loved it! I’m a huge Rockford Files fan and that theme song really makes me smile. And it’s just awesome that you were part of that awesome sound. So cool.
Brilliant leaders for great tv-series. Mike post was the best.
Soundtrack to my childhood. Thanks for sharing
I think I mentioned this the first time you posted this stuff, but growing up I used to hate the "Hillstreet Blues" theme song as it meant it was my bedtime. I can appreciate it now that I'm an adult.
Utility players whether in baseball or all the infrastructure workers that makes our life easier are rarely noticed. Leland’s salute to the utility musicians is well deserved too.
As a teenager in the 70s, and attempting to learn the bass, I always wondered how I could ever play that well. (I couldn't) thanks for putting a very big smile on y face.
Bass is awesome on Hill Street!
Hill Street Blues.....a CLASSIC theme song as well.
So very cool!
Thanks for these tracks
Childhood memories indeed.
Loved Magnum PI's opener with the swooping Huey.
I think I got that chopper right.
Whenever I saw Mike Post in the credits I always knew the music was going to good for the show.
Hill Street Blues, Greatest American Hero, Magnum PI, Rockford Files
So many of these bring back such fond memories. Thanks Lee.
Beautiful work! The Hill Street Blues theme is my favorite work from Mike Post. Best of luck!
Very good and relaxing music! 👍🏻👏🏻
Yay so far so good! I got to hear it, and an incoming call broke in, but I got to hear it again! :) Told my dad what I was listening to so he could maybe quick get my brother to play it off his phone. At least I know they're both puttering around today. I like all these! I had forgotten how much the Magnum PI theme moves❣️❤️ Looking forward to a few warmer days. 😀
Yeah! This wakes a lot of childhood memories growing up in the 70s and 80s when Magnum and Rockford were THE shows in Germany. 👍👍 Nice!
What a cornucopia of musical genius and talent you are Mr. Lee. You’ve literally done it all!
Watching ten days out. As Feb 6 my mom passed. But this is cool. You are Sir quite incredible. ✌️✌️✌️
Such iconic theme tunes. Thanks so much, Lee
These were not just great theme songs, they were top 40 hits that got plenty of radio airplay.
Not blocked here in South Australia. Hill St. Blues is my favourite show and theme of the 3 with a great guitar sound and solo (and cool bass of course). 🙏
Beautiful! We’d LOVE to hear you play these songs!
Good afternoon Leland, Just got home from church thank you for the fascinating share it was awesome. By the way I was introduced to Frankenstein and how you enjoy mandolin frets, the density of the wood, pick up placement, and all the wonderful signatures. Such a beautiful piece of musical genius. I really enjoy your stuff Leland. ✌️🙏❤️🇺🇸
Wow, these soundtracks are from my favorite shows I use to watch growing up. You must have had a great time working with all those musicians. Thanks Lee have a great day!
Wow Lee, that is some quality music that brings you back in time!!! Thanks!!!!!!
So far so good. Unbelievable amount of music you contribute d
Larry Carlton on synth guitar? Wow! And of course your playing is sublime.
Thanks for being persistent and exposing us to this additional facet of your career.,
Stay safe and stay well!
I loved all of these shows!
Hi Lee. It’s amazing of the amount of work goes into making a musical introduction of a television show. So many musicians and so many great songs. A great Sunday flashback for me personally. What is more amazing is the fact that we only heard a small part of the piece which opened/closed the program. The remainder of these pieces are so delightful. Thank you for this!
Thank you for today's post.haha.i love Mike Posr work a big fan Love hearing all of this, haven't heard this in a long time.Stay safe be safe Leland ❤.Thank you for the public health notice we need to be safe.Thank you
.
All great shows that I watched a lot ( still watch reruns sometimes )That synth part on The Rockford Files always caught my ear! ! Thank You As Always !
Great Memories...All those tv shows
Sounds like the great Larry Carlton on lead guitar 🎸
Wow, I didnt realize these iconic tracks had even more awesomeness beyond what we heard on the TV intro. Very cool!
Hi Lee. I remember all these tv themes, as I was a seventies and eighties kid. I was humming every one of them. Great to hear them again. You Guys work hard, what with all the arrangements and the incidental music as well. Have a great rest of weekend
Jesus Lord, Lee you've brought back some great memories racing home off da school bus to watch alot if these shows, and would never hear the " whole song"👹, now ,not being blocked of course, The Lee Meister 😀 👍 🎶👈 Grandpa Jeeves 🥸🎸🤙👈👍
😎 Posting Post! Fingers crossed it stays up 🤞
Lee My Mom's favorite show was the Original Magnum P.I. So cool you played on that as well!!!!!!
We have seen LA Law in Sweden also in the 80-ties-90-ties! Good music!
No way! Wow, this was an awesome one!!! All these songs take me to back to that past, blissful emotional state. So crazy, but 80s Magnum PI is my favorite tv show, it’s emotional comforting. Hill street blues theme song is one of those feel good ones too. Oh..I like the Moonlighting theme by Al Jarreau also :) Would love hear more of your tv theme songs. Amazing how music makes us feel♥️♥️♥️
Those iconic songs are so awesome!
Thank you I received your book on Thursday and it was Saturday night b4 my wife saw it and the first thing she did was shoot me the bird.
Excellent
Loved all these programmes ❤️
Great stuff today!! Loved it!
Lee playing the part of Peter the Pocket Picker. Nice.
Got to see and hear the whole video and not blocked 😃😃😃
may be tmi.. but I just took a 45 minute shower... and was listening to siriusXM 70's channel.... I heard 13 songs in a row that you played on... Don't know if anyone on the planet, other than perhaps James Jamerson that could do that!! You rock man!
I always wondered how long it took MP to come up with these they are timeless. Miss my childhood when I hear them.
Hill Street Blues...one of the most iconic themes out there! It's one of the few I can play on the piano. They just don't make theme songs like this any but then again they don't make shows like that any more!
Evening Leland and everybody
Brilliant as usual Leland.great to hear these tracks as they bring back lots of good teenage memories🤞🤞🤞
Thanks for today's post. I was not familiar w Mike Post
Thank you Lee ✌🏻 happy Sunday 🖐🏻
2:35, Sunday and still on in Mexico City. Everybody take care.
Theme to Baa Baa Black Sheep one of my favorites themes and shoes!
Hill Street Blues has the best TV theme song of all time.
Been waiting for you to do TV themes again yay!!!!
My opinion: Mike Post is a genius
Wow, this was surreal. Have been hearing some of these most of my life, and everybody who was around then knows them, but they have always evoked visual images relating to the shows. With you there listening to them and providing names, the visual is suddenly one of musicians working in a room....
Didn't realize you had done Magnum & Hill Street.
Perhaps also surreal at this point, our hs band auxillary group had a (small precision dance) routine to Rockford at one point....👋👋
Wonderful stuff...
Loved the Hill Street Blues theme music…..and The Rockford Files…. I know you must have been on movie soundtracks, Lee………What are a few of the biggest ones?
Wow , this has caused me to transform to what seems to be a better time for USA . Things were simpler that's for sure.
When stations were prepared to have 60 seconds of a theme song before the show started and werr not freighted people would turn off! Today's short attention spans, ahh! Love Mike Post!
Rockford Files theme is great!
Back in the day tv shows had theme songs. Not any more. Theme songs take up valuable commercial time.
Hey, Lee and everyone! I gotta wonder - did Mike Post ever consider making an album called "Post Production"? (Editing to add: I am a little disgusted with myself for thinking of that title.)
😅😂
Where is the cymbal crash when we need it?
Was disgusted to read it 😃
@@lastnamefirst4035 Bullseye!
Very clever, Winston! I think some puns are so good that they are above disgust…..and that was good. 😁 cymbal crash indeed!
Two hours in and not blocked. TV themes indeed sneak into all of our lives, in the developed world anyway. We have a local commentator who loves imitating the Law and Order theme. And every time you say you've loaded up the truck and heading downtown, there's Buddy Ebsen.

All three of these shows were favorites of my Dad's. That might have something to do with why they are mine too.
