Yesterday (20-11-10), we had a discussion online while watching a stream from my YT showing my addition of a soda-can detector. I just placed an empty soda-can close to the detector, and hoped that the birds should force the can into the hole by mistake...nothing happened until this...
However, i think i need a better plan for this training...imagine he sight of these beautiful birds flying in for a landing with a can in the beak... to be continued
A friend from University of Stockholm showed me this, 'Click-training for humans'. 'Click training' is a well known method for animal training. I find this article and video really inspiring.

Now, if we could only find a way to train humans to do the same.. :)
We can (no pun intended :D . No idea why we haven't already. But if you just made the cost of buying things like cans and bottles ridiculously highy. Like £10 for a bottle of water or a can of coke. But then pay people £9 for every can they return to recycle. People would think much harder about littering. Then you have the issue of people steeling cans just to sell :D but im sure there is a solution for that also.
In certain states of my country, they pay for bottles to be returned and kids make money from it.
@@Friday_WasTaken that's just going to anger people coz there's MANY things that can't be bought any other way. You're the sort of person that would unintentionally force the companies into making everything in plastic bladders and then you'd have a UNRECYCLABLE PLASTIC problem instead. Multiple states in multiple countries INCLUDING AUSTRALIA have ALREADY solved it by having a few cents for each bottle returned. Kids make money doing it.
@@OffGridInvestor why would i make people use unrecyclable plastic...?
Lol
Train them to do the same thing but with diamond rings and let the birds rob jewelery for you, form an underground bird gang and become the richest bird evil ever
Ha ha ha ha ha ho ho ho ho ho
Go learn maths kid
Is possible it happened in Netherland a parrot stole a diamond ring from a jewelry while nobody were watching sadly the police catch it
Wow next level training! I expect in 3 months we'll see them pick up abandoned bikes, lost toddlers and arduino's from competing birdfeeders ;) Way to go Hans! Keep up this lovely experiment!
💀💀
@@_lilyh0lic_862 LOFL!!! Yeah, that guys birdfeeder is programmed to dispense two treats at a time! Squeezing the little tab on the ethernet connector with my beak should free this thing up.
In my opinion, i think you should gain the reward 3x because the bird try really hard to carry that beer can to the recycle.
He really does have to work for his morsel of food !
Probably enjoys the puzzle.
Awesome idea.
It's cool seeing your trials
Incredible work, Hans! Would love to add these latest videos to your Hackster write-up. The community is loving the project!
The magpies need to form a union now, and start negotiations about fair pay for the amount of work. Also work hazards assessment.
Absolutely brilliant! 👍
When this is ready for market, I would like to hear more.
Me too. Would like to buy one of the cigarette models. Or if you dont plan to sell, can you post the plans to github or something maybe?
GENIUS!
Also I have one question, Is the reason you're training them is so that they on recycling day they go around pick through peoples garbage and bring you aluminum can so you're able to bring them to the recycling center for money? lol
85% of all cans sold in Sweden are recycled in recycling machines at regular supermarkets and such.. So they wouldn't find many in the trash unfortunately (for them).
Looool... Genius!!!
I guess we won't need a trap door after all😁👍
❤️
Now, if only we could train them to do the same with discarded face masks..., we could save the oceans.
This was my idea 10 years before. Use birds (crows) to collect litter (waste) in exchange for nuts. Thumps up
UPDT
UPDR
It’s perfect 🤓
Hhghhhhhhghhhhhhh7hhhggghhh
Is it always the one magpie or are there others? Definitely they imitate and actively think
IPO?
ICO. And the coin a cola cap
Hur gjorde du för att få skatorna att koppla ihop vad de skall göra för att få belöning?

I'm curious is there a way to train magpies to identify threats
Like the threat of the MBT outside your window right now waiting for your PC to become vulnerable?
Hej Hans! Läste om dig och din maskin i Aftonbladet i dag. Fantastisk! Så kul att se innovativa personer tänka utanför boxen. Göra vår närmiljö trevligare och få oss att se skator som nyttodjur i stället för något som skräpar ner. Kalas bra . Tack :-)
Stop giving these birds jobs! Next, they'll need a mortgage haha
you should teach Bears how to clean up the forest for food
xD
I am interested if this could be deployed on a “mass scale” to utilize birds and other trainable animals to reduce the amount of litter in the environment for a treat. But then I’d also have to wonder what kind of implications this could have on the environment of mass produced. I’d assume a lot of animals that we can train to cooperate with the machines would eventually trade the dangers and labors involved in acquiring their natural diets in exchange for a guaranteed and safe meal with little to no risks involved. Other than any potential predators being around the location of any trash they may be in search of to bring to the machine. Either way this is beyond interesting and could definitely be used on some scale with minimal to no environmental affect, I’d assume.
The biggest problem is probably that a massive amount of birds would find that place and become a problem.
This could become a problem with the bird's diets. There's already some problems in spring when people feed birds unsuitable food and the birds go for that instead of maggots and worms to feed to their chicks. Leads to malnourished chicks. This can even happen when the food (eg. seeds) is ok to feed to the adults but the chicks need a diet that's higher in protein. Some wildlife rehab orgs around here have warned people not to feed stuff like that from winter all the way into spring when the chicks hatch.
PETA would freak out over using animals in that manner, all the bad publicity in the world. Monkeys can't harvest coconuts anymore.
Vengo de Un Poco De Todo jaja
@Hans Forsberg *LEMME THROW MY GARBAGE NOW AND SEE IF I GOT MY REWARD* 🤣🤣
Nu ska fåglarna panta 🤣
Animals are smarter than people! Shame

In a way its very sad, to have animals pick up the trash humans leave in nature.... but nice trick though.
Why are there so many coasters in the garden? If you even need to train a bird for your garbage, maybe you should reconsider your habits ...
such a shame that we let animals clean our trash.
