What if You Try To Lift a Negative Mass? Mind-Blowing Physical Impossibility!

  • In this video I show you a real experiment that shows how something with a negative mass reacts to a force applied to it. Then I talk about negative mass and if it really is a physical impossibility. If it is real, then how would it react to regular mass? (Great source on negative mass arxiv.org/pdf/1308.2683.pdf)

Hey everyone just letting you know that I did in fact mean to say mass and not weight. This was a simulation to show how negative mass would react if it were real. I very much know the difference between mass and weight🙂 If you watched this video thinking I should be saying weight instead of mass then you need to watch it again until it sinks in.

The Action Lab look seriously read the term I’m not watching anymore of your videos as it’s feeling more and more akin to flat earther science
      The definition states it clearly
to have a negative mass is to have a negative quantity of matter hence it’s impossible in most situations if not all
A negative mass is not something that can be simplified to moving the opposite direction it’d be the opposite of anything that has matter present it would have no density and less than no matter present so it wouldn’t even something effected anywhere similar to what we know
For instance would we even be able to touch it or would it be a void that we pass through and inside seriously this is a fundamentals tricky subject
mass, in physics, the quantity of matter in a body regardless of its volume or of any forces acting on it. The term should not be confused with weight, which is the measure of the force of gravity (see gravitation) acting on a body.

Metal Gear it's probabilities are possible but his example is flawed by using a ping pong ball pulled by a string and a balloon on a string because a negative mass object would still remain stationary for an unmeasurable time period outside a vacuum when pulled due to atmospheric pressure and then once in motion began to accelerate faster than force that caused it to move. In the jar and car example the negative mass object acted upon by the increase of atmospheric pressure in one direction would shoot out like a rocket in the opposite direction.
Good theory, poor examples of it's actions and reactions to force and atmospheric pressure.
Could go deeper into it by talking about if it is moving towards a gravitational pull verses away but it's way past my bed time. A small hint; he talks about it briefly when he talks about dropping it.

magnetically sensitive negative mass, apply electromagnet field to push with varying intensity based on desired speed, slow down with opposing electromagnet. The issue would be that (to my knowledge) we have yet to observe any scenario where you can apply force to a contained object and have it return enough force to propel the containment, all that is fixed to said containment and itself in any sort of way.

Even better than that, look into the Alcubierre drive if you haven't heard of it. Theoretically the drive moves space around a mass beyond light speed without violating physics. The drive requires the existence of negative mass with specific properties, but is consistent with Einstein's field equations. However, jury is still out on it since we haven't yet figured out how to merge general relativity with quantum mechanics. What we think of as dark energy could in fact be negative mass, or it could be even more complicated such as dark energy and dark matter might be two properties of the same thing: negative mass. The latter is being researched currently and might even be testable within the next couple decades.

I don't think it is possible. Mass, as I understand it, is not some property that can be whatever. Each element has an atomic mass, which describes how much of it there is in one unit. It doesn't make sense for there to be a negative amount of mass anywhere. There can be a deficit relative to something else, like a pressure differential, but it's never below 0. Think of it as an intricate 3D distribution of dots in the vacuum of 0. It's all additive, not subtractive.

I appreciate the ending differential analyses between mass, negative mass, and finally, antimatter. It's an easy, quick, and simple Illustration to outline. It's just that our literacy has some tendencies that give false illusions of relevancy to other concepts that perhaps were not most aptly named (a very common issue in science;the last disciplines and their intuitive skills do not juxtapose well with those of the creative / linguistical / artistic sides of our brains. It takes a plethora of unique talents to integrate all of these skills in such a way that is minimally complex, ergo maximally accessible to the fullest extent of interpretation, analysis, and application, but simultaneously is also maximally potent, complete, intricate, and microcosmically borne with cohesion in its independently natural aptitudes for interpolation, extrapolation, application, and visibly taut with these self-explanatory "instructions" (which, majestically in its own exudence of pulchritudinous grandeur, sports the power and pure force of rendering that naturally follows the mental faculties and imaginative processes that produce the raw potential of advancement, but then also necessitate the brutal components that move and arrange the decoding of the original message for what to do, now put to work by way of some actual labor and deciding amongst the illustrious surroundings that make pragmatism Be, and Become via force and intent put onto the resources found within one system, married with the next system, integrated with another, and so on.
In other words, what is for this video a small, but relatively unintuitive, unnatural step of post-accomplishment selective key integration - specifically instead of merely ending the video, or naming some resources or concepts to look into afterwards, the author actually takes on the responsibility of tackling a naturally curious next step, albeit most professors I know, work with, and have worked with, would ignore the antimatter explanation altogether in favor of efficiency, and literally saying as much as that these type of questions, - additional but natural by circumstance, yet so unique and innovative and potentially deviation of direction from the core concepts, - that they can interact or interfere with the core interfacing with the most basic simple and commonly expected of the curriculum.
Ignoring these subtle facets can halt innovation and uninspire theorists, curious minds, and as it turns out, those who desire an even easier, more sensibly rational and intelligent learning route, by presenting a far richer portion of the universe in such a concise, minute little departure, that the remembering of the integration of these similar but necessarily differential parts makes future analyses and applications of any portion of the subjects at hand with newer, different parts so much easier, because it teaches a student to observe and study these naturally occurring elements of Nature, or Program Design, or any other detail or category of information so much more accessible and righteously justified to the student, who by nature of our learning institutions and the necessary trust bound with subordinate psychology are already nervous and typically scared, unsure, or disinterested in asking questions that would otherwise independently lead to the same conclusions and smoothness of presentation... This habit is criminal, but resurgent with its convenience for Instructors. I wish that more presenting bodied would take on the responsibilities of content inclusion and audience involvement the way this one does. Having taught many disparate areas of study at The John's Hopkins University for years now has perhaps made me crazy about these potential details in presentation and the purity of the risks for abandonment that I see commonplace in a top 10 institution (depending on the year) certainly shows that the endowments and budgetary investments are (as only to be expected) NOT going towards hiring and sourcing and applying the Elite of pedagogical benefit and resources reflecting and corresponding with ideal outcomes.
Needless to say today has been a stretch, much like my post, cooked over a fire of vocational aggravation embedded with pure mediocrity, with nobody in over an hour's drive having an IQ as high as two-sigma how my own... It can be a struggle to get access outlets for the anger and stress and physical agony for neurological reasons, but still, I always ensure my communication is... "Intelligible", in the Epitome of Hyperbole as it comes with applying the term.
Anyway, I truly was just excited that the creator mentioned and investigated the Antimatter element, and without actually directly saying as much, encouraged us to think about what we say and how we say things, how we create and coin concepts such that their integration into your field of study may be aptly and appropriately received, engaged with and understood by your colleagues and cohorts. A persistent, consistent, coherence and consistency of the quality, and the qualia of Perception, as that bit of extra effort may preselect additional food for thought and complete the goals of the lesson and maximize the quality of conversation (or presentation) by mode of subtle plus articulate details combined with the fortitude of the actively excited ongoings of the learned company in your wake generating such a massive success in going beyond the baseline obligations, elevating the scope of thought with access to key information on which to ponder with its conclusion, and setting a mindful, relatable, and brilliant example of what keeps me going, what keeps me professing, and what keeps me learning. Oh... And at the end of the day, what keeps me sane, or as close to it as I can be. Thank you for your contribution to the bounty of good information that is alive and well on CZcams, and thank you for your powerful commitment to creativity and inspiration for yourself and of others who find purpose in the Analytic Philosophy concerning all things; Abnormal Psychology and the Metrics of the Mind; and of course with Physics - for me, mostly the Theoretical side, though frequently some wild Mathematics and less frequently the smaller, more rigid, localized microcosmic arrays of the field and beyond also find their way in and by way of wave stimulation, gravity/as, and the magnetics/ism of duality and electrical attraction vibrate at their own frequencies around me to synchronize my observations and incrementally give each of themselves their own time in productive, creative, sane-making ways, all relative in their necessary proportions, and ongoing as one video ends and the next one begins.
Cheers. Hopefully nobody actually read this.

You could make the negative mass somehow float in a vakuum inside a globe and if this globe is on the backside of a spaceship you could take a piece of mass and push it against the globe so that they begin to chase until speed of light. And if you would take the mass away it would stop. Best engine concept ever thought of in history, thank me me later humanity. :D
