As a black woman who was a former liberal Democrat? I never listened to this guy, because I was told to dismiss him. Now that I am in my early 40s, lived some life, healed my racial insecurities, and stopped listening to the race bating hatred? This guy makes total logical sense. LOL it's really interesting what healing will do to you, your perceptions about the world and it's people.
Thank you for being open minded and dedicated to the truth and good values and seeing past the divide and conquer bullshit. This from a slightly younger white guy, called racist more times than I can count.... Raised in a trailer park, served 2 tours in Iraq, 2 college degrees, great career... still looked at by many who are brainwashed as the scum of the earth because of the rhetoric that appeals in some to the very thing they claim to abhor in order to consolidate support and exert pressure on those that dissent. How did you reach that healing? The question we have to answer now is how we duplicate your healing experience. So many people are languishing in pain and ignorance like a battered woman in an abusive relationship as they listen to the lefts lies. How do we help repeat your results I wonder? (Just thinking aloud) What helped you open your heart in the beginning of your transformation? What/who made an impact on you in the beginning when you started doubting your previously held beliefs?

It's paraphrasing Adam Smith. The actual and more extensive quote (I would note "quotes", as Smith addressed the idea more than once) would suggest that such gatherings should not be banned by government, and any proposed regulation be minimized and adopted only after long and careful study as to unintended consequences. BTW, I'm sure I've heard Newt comment on the more comprehensive argument by Smith.

I wish! History class now is all about oppressors. Just a few years ago my kids ( now 30s) were involved in constitution defense class and took a trip to our nation s capital to compete. Now they hired a native American with an agenda 🙄. Same school 15 years later

Dr. Peterson - A family member of mine recently attempted suicide. After inpatient care, he’s doing ok, but I know it’s a bandaid. The same things are still eating at him. I sent him your book, with an inscription of how much you’ve helped me. The mentorship you deliver is a bright light in the darkness. I’ll talk with him about it as he reads and offer a steady hand. Unfortunately some people have family members who refuse to watch any intellectual videos or any thing over 15 min and shut down when you try to edify them.
He is more important than just one in a millon. He is made in the image of God and he loves him like he is the only one. A man like Peterson is Gods way of sending help. I pray that God gives you the words to console , comfort and guide him .
Three determining factors motivate many toward suicidal tendencies: 1. Lack of belonging 2. Life altering stressful condition 3. Desensitization toward death

Im 20 year old young black man and this is why i left being a liberal and now im a libertarian with conservatives views. Growing up as a black liberal made me not value the beautiful things in today’s society i was taught i was oppressed by my “ woke gender fluid non binary pro black feminist cousin” she made me feel like i was a victim and questioned my man hood.i was depressed all the time lazy with no morals and principles the radical left is destructive to a degree for young folks but since the beginning of last year in 2021 i left being liberal and my conservative views recently broke a 2 year relationship with my ex but im happy now and will always stand up for my beliefs

My brothers were homeschooled almost all their school years. I was educated that way for the last two years of high school. Results? Both of my brothers became leaders in industry. Their wives are leaders in their careers. My husband, son and I are caregivers. Everyone works and helps others. My brothers have been polite and friendly through all these years. They had no problems getting jobs and scored extremely high in the college entrance exams. We are all blessed and I have my Mom to thank because she organized our classroom, made sure we had an excellent schedule, took us to museums, libraries and historic sites and encouraged us to read and think and question whatever we listened to.
If only that were the norm. You’re a home school success story. Just as there are plenty of public school success stories. Nation of 350M people - education cannot be broad brushed like that. I applaud your success though, and as a public school special education teacher - respect your vocation - it requires a certain selflessness - it’s not a standard issue virtue on the average human.
That can only happen if the family has the education and resources, its not the norm.

As a fellow home schooled person this was my experience. I got accepted into most major colleges at thirteen and built a buisness worth more than the rest of my family combined.
My mother was Genghis Khan in drag. She wasn't college educated, nor a teacher. But she did know me enough to know when I was just whining, or really had enough.
What an amazing conversation by two phenomenal intellectuals! I will have to listen a couple more times to absorb it.
A direct result of the redicalized left: prior to early 21 014, the Walmart,, where I worked had a transvestite gay fellow as a customer service manager. He acted effeminate. In fact, he either leered at me or tried to flirt with me. Usually both. He had a very unreasonable customer one night. He, being black, channeled an aggressive black mother. He treated that person who paid his salary like a naughty child. He was reported to higher management, and immediately terminated. Pure vindication of reinforced insanity.
I never heard Gingrich participate in a long form conversation like this before. Thoroughly impressive man. The statement "you are probably a deeper thinker than I am; I'm just a politician" seemed particularly humble and self-aware for a politician.
It was at that point in the show I was pretty sure that Newt had never FULLY listened to Peterson before. Maybe a few clips here and there. He seemed overwhelmed on a certain level.

The Contract with America was a gimmick to get votes. Period. Every politician that signed the Contract, including Gingrich, breached the contract immediately after getting elected.
The linchpin of that contract was Term Limits. Abandoned immediately. Gingrich has done not done anything towards that goal. Some great spin and revisionist thinking on his part.
How has any of his legacy advanced socioeconomic progress? That man was utterly ineffective. And he’s no great historian either. He is in entirely a BSing politician.

Newt Gingirch is no 'gentleman' - if you think so, you know nothing about this man. He is/was a very shady career politician. He is arguably the one who started this hardcore partisanship in the 80s.

Newt’s only children are the ones from 2 marriages earlier-he doesn’t have any with Calista (who is about the same age as his daughters, and whom he started banging while married to wife #2, who didn’t agree to an open marriage, so he ditched her shortly after she was diagnosed with MS). Of course, none of that personal stuff is relevant to performance of one’s public duties-I mean, it’s not like anyone should be impeached over a consensual affair, right 🙄.

I am from Georgia and in college worked for my hometown newspaper during Newt Gingrich's first successful Congressional race. I interviewed him and covered many speeches locally. I will tell you he has said the same things and has had the same view of government and governance now as he did in 1978.
Those beliefs are fundamental to conservative philosophy. I believe them as well.
Ironically, it will be historians in a future (if we are to have one) age that will point to Speaker Gingrich as the stalwart of Conservatism that laid the path out of the insanity of the 20th century.
I live in what used to be his house district. To think we had Newt as our representative back then and now we have been saddled with Lucy McBath... My how things changed here.
So it wasn't just a placard for an election, it was truthfully meant. Unlike today everything seems to be about self.
Joy - I was a reporter at a small town newspaper when assigned to cover a speech by George H.W. Bush during his reelection campaign. I heard him talk about a New World Order and had no idea what that was. Probably an expanded UN or something to that effect.
So I can attest to the Bush family being big government proponents along with most of the Dems favorite Republicans, the RINOs.
Newt was right when he was Speaker of the House and he's right now. Why he isn't the RNC Chair I have no idea.
My 16-year-old granddaughter is amazingly conservative and so is my 24 year old daughter. They’re very Internet savvy and know everything going on but I’m telling you what, they don’t like it.

It's fairly easy for young women to become conservative when you have two choices.
One is to have a loving husband and a family.
Other is having to deal with bearded ladies with fat cocks and cro magnon bone structure that want to hang around in your toilets and changing rooms.
I think young folk instinctively feel something is off in contemporary Western culture, a blip in the matrix which the blind-sided ideologies on the Left (the atomization and amplification of human identities into oppressed groups) seem to be fueling with ever-increasing intensity.

Dear William I think each is a really good listener. And thinking of replying while the other speaks. My dad used to read a chapter, then ask what we had heard. Do that with kids ,grandkids. Learning to really listen and re frame the information

My grandfather was a great teacher, he was an amazing craftsman, he would make things for me when I visited him on school break each summer. He would talk while he showed me what he was doing and explain why he did things in the steps he did to make them. He made me a wooden chess set using a lathe for all of the bases and then hand carving the heads of the pieces. He also made the chessboard out of a dark and white hardwoods. He made me a beautiful dagger out of a file. He ground the file into shape on the electric grinder and then fine tuned it with sandpaper, and finished it with sanding rouge to a mirror finish. He fashioned a brass handguard and end piece and made circles from a quarter inch thick piece of leather. He put the dagger on the late again and filed the handle to shape with a hand file. The burnt the leather into beautiful shades of browns to black. That was the most beautiful dagger I have ever seen. He also made miniature tool set for me, it included a steel vice about an inch and a half long that actually opened and close. Working pliers about 3/4 inch long, a ball peen hammer with steel head, and wood handle. and a flat-head screw driver in the same scale. My mom through all that out when the family moved one time. She didn't even know what was in the cigar boxes I kept that stuff in. But she also tossed my chess set and chessboard...which I found to be so stupid I couldn't believe she could do such a thing!!! I still have a miniature spinning wheel that actually spins by pushing on the foot lever. It is a foot tall. Ah,,,the memories. Aye?

Edit: I just finished this entire interview/conversation. These 2 minds...I could listen to them for another couple hours. Both at an equal intellectual level, I did get a chuckle when Peterson finished a very detailed description or thought & Gingrich replied with something about he's not that well versed in the psychology of...whatever it was. Peterson looked down at the pencil he was rolling in his fingers & had a look on his face like 'I guess I went a little overboard there', as if he forgot he wasn't lecturing to his psychology students! 😂 It just gave me a chuckle.
Overall...such an interesting 90 min.
Yes, I definitely could listen these two for many more hours on their sensible discussions.

I think Newt was politely demurring, as one of the best Historians in this age, he knows Psychology too well, as most of history is made up with human Psychology.

Wow, I listened to this interview/discussion on the audio-only podcast, but the video is so much better. It's amazing how seeing the expressions on these two men's faces as they speak to one another really informs the listener. I'm going to have to watch some more of the episodes that I'd originally only listened to.
I've always considered Mr. Gingrich to be formidable and articulate in my youth; however, at the time I was raised a working class Liberal and my father ran on Row D for local assemblyman. That said, like my father, I have always been fiscally conservative, pro-freedom, anti-war, law abiding, moral, anti-racist, pro-worker, anti-welfare, pro-family, etc. I would be considered a Conservative today with those same values. I am not affiliated with any party, independent and vote for who I feel will best represent me and my family. In the past, I tended to vote more Democratic and supported Clinton, Mario Cuomo and even Chuck Schumer and I never understand the influence Mr. Gingrich has had on those people. Most people I know treat their party like their favorite sports team with stubborn loyalty regardless of their party's shift in ideology and don't even realize it. This has been an eye opener for me.
I was born to be a JFK Democrat. By definition, now in 2022, that makes me a Conservative. A relative to the opposite mindset position. I've bounced on both sides of the isle all my life. I don't trust any party. That said, at the moment, the republican party seems to be the most repairable but, I believe we are watching the very beginning of a new party coming - The American party. No more half-time political shows.

I agree that many look at things as team D or team R. We need to get away from that and assess what each candidate stands for and how they will vote.
It’s important to note that those that voted in Trump did so knowing he was taking out the Bush’s the Cheney’s, Obama and the Clintons. That was the political change we needed. Unfortunately most people couldn’t see the forest through the media disinformation trees.

Congratulations. Hopefully you get into meat based diet too. I think a lot of depression can be attributed to not getting the good nutrients from meats as plants have too many anti-nutrients.
Make sure to take a breath and just look back at how far you've come, what you're getting to, and where you want to be. I'd personally do it at least monthly to keep yourself on track. Be better than yesterday
@@jglee6721 Hey thanks for the good wishes, appreciated. I have worked as a strength coach for athletes I can fully attest your diet and fitness play a major role in both physical and mental health. My own experience, which is not suited here can come from a trauma outside of your control. Having the wrong information can result in a person fearing their mind is creating their suffering ,which can cause all sorts of issues. Thankfully I was fortunate to meet a fantastic physical therapist, and along with educating myself eg Dr Petterson and Andrew Huberman amongst others, educating myself on my nervous system made a huge difference in finding calmness.

Newt, You're great! So glad you didn't retire. Our kids grew up listening to you. We had roundtable discussions of religion & politics very often and as they grew, daily. Homeschooled in San Diego K-12 (real hs, not given assignments by a public school), 1 now in grad school, the other studying engineering. We delved into history, our Constitution, used Hillsdale College's free courses in high school. Mr. Peterson, this is a great interview. Get your kids out of public school. If you home school right, you'll be out & about busy. People always commented as to they're mannerly & well spoken/look adults in the eye. Both been to Israel w one of them 3x, both to DC to lobby Congress, learn leadership. Grad just got back from 4th trip to DC. Neither allowed to do social media until graduating high school, had to pick up the phone. We lived humbly, bought in barrio neighborhood, keep cars 19 yrs to live off 1 income. You can do it folks! Pull your kids out. They will be our next leaders & voters!

I am pleased to hear your appreciation of Newt Gingrich. I have not read any of his books, and have never made a study of him, but I just really appreciate his apparent sincerity and a kind of humility that keeps one's words realistic. It was because I sensed the dedication of this man, that I wrote to him for his advice regarding one of my grandson's, who seemed to me to be kind of stuck in the middle of a situation that kept him so often silenced. I wrote to Mr. Gingrich, and he recommended The National Geographic for children. I thanked him in a short letter, and began the magazine for my grandson He really got into it. The child had also expressed a growing interest in insects. His enthusiasm for the NATGO, encouraged me to offer more information for his intellectual grown and to keep him happy in his findings. I discovered a publication about insects in a binder, with additional periodical pages to add.( I think they came every month for a year.) He loved this as well. He is now in his late thirties, with a good job, a great wife, a sweet little girl, and some dogs, on ten acres in Texas. What impressed me most about the response from Mr. Gingrich, was that he even bothered with me at all, in such a trivial matter in comparison to other matters in his daily doings. This also impressed my young grandson, that someone in Washington would care about his pleasure, or lack of it. He was a quiet kid, and a good kid, and became more and more confident. I know it was a small thing, but small things can turn mole hills into mountains, -or something like that. I have always thought that Newt was a good Speaker; further, he was fair with Bill Clinton, (I thought), and cares about our country and its citizens. He, or someone he trusted, saw to it that somebody bothered to give a grandmother advice to help activate the struggling imagination of a young child. I am still thankful to him; and I thank you too, -for recognizing the good deeds of such a good person.

A few years back, after my Dad had passed away, I had been going through what had been some of his old office papers and such from before his retirement years. Actually, there was a lot of papers from after his retirement as well now that I think about it. Anyways, through some of his folders, I had found letters from our senator who had been in the senate for a considerable amount of time and also those of some of our representatives. A lot of these letters, if not all, had been handwritten. They had answered my Dad’s concerns through their own penmanship. My Dad was a normal, everyday, hardworking constituent, that was all. He never wore business suits, never hung around politicians, that’s for sure, he also related better with his dog than a good number of people, and found his peace in our woods. My Dad was one of my most favorite people in this world, and I miss him every single day and always will. My Mum would have claimed it’s because I am so much like him, and now that I’m older, I would agree.
I do believe there had been a time before the internet, our politicians would hand write their own letters. I’d like to think they did this to their more important ones, but I’m being a bit selfish there. I truly believe your letter touched his heart and pulled at his heart strings all at the same time. You searched out for a person you had respected and believed he could give you solid advice and he did. He saw your honesty and your love for your grandchild and so of course he felt it necessary to answer you properly and with thought. I wouldn’t be surprised if he remembers your letter about your grandson and maybe one day you can ask, or simply write to give him an update from years past.

Newt really care about people. I met him there in Newnan Georgia where I had moved to back in 93. He had a small office right next to the people who handle workman comp claims. I think he actually got involved, got me an appointment with a dermatologist there in Newnan and a referral to Emory University in Atlanta and got my problem taken care of.
The best interview/conversation I've had the pleasure of witnessing for many, many years.
This was a wonderful conversation. Both men were tremendously kind and courteous to each other all while being really insightful.

That’s why they had to get him off of fox. He was pointing g out the corruption on the right as well as the left. They can’t have that.
One of the few interviews where the interviewee gets to drive the conversation. Dr. Peterson, thanks for allowing Newt to explain the foundations of American conservatism in such a detailed way. Newt would have made a good and very interesting president.

Wow, another one of my favorite thinkers, this time from the realm of politics!! I’m seeing some common threads in many of these discussions. I’m seeing a thirst for the ultimate good and the ultimate freedom of man to be found in the discipline of Love.
I actually thought he probably wasn't qualified to be president In 2012.. which was the first election I was old enough to take part in. My assumptions were entirely incorrect. He seems like a smart guy and a well rounded candidate. I'm glad JP had this talk with him, giving me a chance to familiarize myself with Mr. Newt Gingrich a bit better. Especially considering I was completely uninformed on him before this video.
He's bought and paid for multiple times over. Your initial instinct was correct. Don't be fooled because someone speaks eloquently!
@@bhough410 my initial assumptions were based on literally no information at all. It's not foolish to change your assumptions when confronted by new information. Not doing so would be foolish.. also being "bought and paid for" isn't inherently bad. For instance, if the people who are paying him are good people with fair and balanced ideals and reasonable expectations with the intent to do actual good are who "bought" him. I'm not saying that's the case, just pointing out that it's possible. Another possibility is that maybe he's being supported by benefactors who believe he is the one with the fair and balanced ideals and believe in his abilities and his track record. Being paid for what you do isn't a bad thing.. it usually means that you're good at what you do.
He is very smart and articulate. The problem with him for most of us who are older was his personal life. His treatment of his ex-wives was abominable, but by today's loose standards, he might have gotten a pass on it.

He's a hypocrite, just like the rest of us, part good and part bad. I loved the Contract with America and think he would've been a very good President.
I remember him from the 90's, and I have a feeling of negativity around that memory, because of course all I knew about him had first been through the digestive system of the mainstream media (BBC, etc.). But from this discussion I agree completely with everything he had to say, and think he's a very intelligent man indeed. Thanks, both of you.

Loved this conversation, reminded me of the ones I used to have with my dad. It really struck me when Speaker Gingrich started talking about being involved in balancing the federal budget after they won big in 1994. Both my dad and I were really impressed that they had been able to do it, but I, similar to what Gingrich said about the Fed and Greenspan's reaction to it, was wondering what sort of an affect it would have on Treasury rates and that in general it might get the system sort of out of whack. His response was, "Well, they're part of the government, sooner or later it'll dawn on them that they actually balanced the budget, and they'll start spending money like it's somebody else's money again." Sure enough, the press just kept at it with Gingrich and eventually ran him out of the Speakership, and the spigot was cranked back up and everything started going downhill after that.
It would be nice if the Republicans get back the Congress in 2022, if someone can step up and fill the void. This country sorely needs some intellect and competence to sit juxtaposed against the "cleverness" of the current administration. I mean, if we're all forced to heat our homes with wood stoves because every other source of energy is in short supply and outrageously expensive, versus freezing to death, is that really the most efficient way? Did big government really help? Was the solution they came up with really "clever"?
I knew about Gingrich but I had no idea he was so well read, he really impressed me here with his thoughts and articulation. If I could’ve voted in 2012 I would’ve voted for him.

As a former Tulane student of Newt, I did vote for him. I met Newt and Callista at Ye Olde College Inn restaurant for his speech there and worked for his '12 candidacy in New Orleans. "Moot Miit" Romney stopped Newt in the GOP Primary,.... and then threw in the towel instead of fighting to win and gave it to "The Won!" (O: "Show us the documents, Candy!", and then Miit failed to rip him a new one for rigging a national Presidential Debate.)

A truly thought provoking talk. I have gained a self examination into my own life experience. I have a deeper understanding into the mind of Newt Gingrich. I am truly saddened that our perception of Mr Gingrich doesn't represent his character. I am perplexed as to the disconnect. I blame in part, our justifiable contempt for politicians on the whole. Speaker Gingrich and the Contract were part of my earliest political education and, when contrasted with what I saw on the other side of the isle (c-span was an incredible educational tool at the time), an unavoidable shaper of a thoughtful, logical worldview. I still have couple of his books kicking around the house here somewhere, I believe. It's fantastic to see him still active, still as lucid and formidable as ever.
