  • Award-winning chef Marcus Samuelsson has had a lot of success in the culinary world, but his life began with hardships in Ethiopia. In this week’s Sunday Sitdown, the 47-year-old restaurateur tells Willie Geist about his upbringing in a diverse family, having fish thrown in his face while he honed his culinary skills in Europe, and what his mother told him before he was set to cook for President Obama.

I really like Marcus. He is such a positive cheerleader for the contestants on Chopped. He truly seems proud and excited when they do well. If I ever make a trip to NYC, I'm going to put the Red Rooster on my "must-do" list.

I absolutely adore Marcus!! I met him on the #2 train in 2016; I couldn't believe it!! On the same day his cookbook was being released and he took a pic with me that I cherish!! My daughters and I ate at Red Rooster and the food was amazing!! Will be going back very soon!!

The Ethiopians have such a varied LOOK. I've met the ones with very high-bridged noses that are narrow and the low-bridged with wide nostrils and all the ones in between. Truly Ethiopia represents AFRICA.

You should go to Ethiopia and see it yourself. You'll love the country, the hospitality, their warm hearts and open doors to everyone attitude will leave you in awe. I'm Ethiopian too, it's a nice plate to visit to find yourself.

Ethiopians come in all kinds of different looks I lived there for a year and seen tribes that looked like all different types of Africans. Ethiopians are not just the Oromo Tigre and Amhara tribes. These are what most foreigners see so they think all Ethiopians look that way. The Gambella, Omo and many other tribes look like tribes from Central and even west Africa. This is why it is important to travel. Even in West Africa all the tribes don't look the same. Africa is to diverse for ignorant people to understand. There are like 80 tribes in Ethiopia you are a fool if you think they all look like the Ethiopians you are us to seeing in Western countries. The tribes you are use to seeing have a large population and are the ones running the country. Similarly black Americans are a small percentage of the American population and are not usually not running the country. Yet we still see them as Americans who look different from other Americans.

Its like if we had a channel that only showed poor usa trailer parks, Detroit hoods and told everyone that this is all of America it's nothing but poor hoods, all the filth of America rather than showing LA or nyc
