The episode was filled with easter eggs, a swalways, but also filled with heart. Even though we know how this story plays out, it was still this heartbreaking, sad story where you just feel bad for all the people involved. Especially leia, her son grow sup to be a mass murderer. [MORE]
But, let’s get into the easter eggs, shall we? First a couple items I missed last week. ONe, the holo transmitter that Obi Wan carries and that Reva finds is the same one that Qui-Gon has in the phantom menace. Foreshadowing his eventual return.
Also,a few of you pointed out that the Grand Inquisitor is a Pa’aun, and that his species has 2 stomachs. So when Reva got him in the belly, it was never a lethal blow-just an expensive lap band surgery that explains why he l;ooked so lean in Star Wars rebels.
We open on Tatooine with some Jawas, a droid that might be R4 from a new hope [clip, blowing up], and a brand new species in star wars, the space redneck [clip].
Reva is looking for Owen, because she has decided to take revenge on Obi wan by killing a youngling he protected. After all, her friends don't get to live, so should this random kid? We threw out a lot of theories about why she;s after luke-did she want to train him, did she figure out he was Anakin's kid-and it turns out she literally just wanted to kill something to hurt someone. She couldn;t get to Vader, so she settled for Obi-wan.
I still don;t understand why Vader let her live, but whatever, it was the Force.
Then back to the chase outside Jabiim, where composer Natalie holt repurposed John williams chase scene score from empire strikes back [clips]
There are a few alien species in the transport. [3:38] In the back here we have a quarren, left is a Tarsunt, and right is a red nikto. Thanks Adam Lance Garcia for helping me out with that one.
They’re trying to make for planet Tessen, which-by the way-is a Japanese war fan. That is all.
Roken says [motivator is shot]. Which, yeah mad, you gotta maintain those motivators [R4 exploding]. Space redneck could’a told you that.“Well hell's fire boys I tell you what, this here shuttle’s got a jacked up motivator. “
I did like that Leia was spending her time on the shuttle calming down other people, not crying in fear. Showing that she is a natural born leader.
And then, back to Tatooine where Owen and Luke are shopping in town. No wonder Luke wanted to go to tosche station so badly, this is literally the most exciting thing that happens to him all day. And if these eccies running the shop look familiar, it's because this is your mom.
One thing I loved about this series is that we really get to see the evolution of Owen Lars. he’s still kind of a happy go lucky guy on attack of the clones. But in this series Joel Edgertin has morphed him into this grizzled farmer who cares for Luke, but he’s always disappointed in him. I;ve said for years that Owen was one of the most important characters in Star Wars, because he raised a Jedi. Glad we get to see a little bit of the character that explains why he is so stern with Luke in a new hope.
Then back to the Lars homestead, and hey-you ever notice that no one on tatooine is ever sweaty?
Anyways, back on the ship, Ben is trying to speak to qui gon, like he did on the first episode [clip]. You’ll remember that Revenge of the Sith ended with Yoda teaching Obi Wan how to commune with the spirit of his dead master.
I’m going to talk about Qui Gon force ghost and why Ben couldn't see him before at the end of the video.

When Obi-Wan leaves the cave where he has been living for the last 10 years, he packs everything except for one crate. This may be the same crate where Luke found the instructions and pieces to build a new lightsaber in the deleted/restored scene in Return of the Jedi. This is why this scene happens in a cave and not in Obi-Wan's house.

Owen and Beru stole this episode for me, incredible acting on Joel Edgerton’s part especially. He really sells his care for Luke with such a short run time. I imagine for future watchers of the films, the death of Owen and Beru will be much more hard hitting. I loved that what Obi-Wan said to Luke about his father being killed by Vader wasn't some stuff he made up to deceive Luke, nor was it necessarily what he believed, but it was verbatim from his father. So the whole "a certain point of view" is actually Vader/Anakin's point of view, not necessarily Obi-Wan's. Loved how it gave some layers to that whole subplot from the original trilogy.
On another note, I feel the hologram message in A New Hope is not a plot hole and is being over-thought by fans. Leia specifically mentions that he served her father during the clone wars because she's providing context for why they're asking him to join in the Galactic Civil War with the Death Star imminently ready. She seemed to know that Obi-Wan and Ben were the same person in the film and that in itself was a plot hole the show actually fixed.
I genuinely loved this show all the way through! The last episode in particular was just pure 👌

The best aspect of Obi-wan, is Vader gave him the opportunity to forgive himself.
When Vader says, "I killed Anakin." You can see Obi-Wan's facial expression change from self-loathing, to sadness for his friend. I think Vader showed compassion for his friend by taking ownership of his path, allowing Obi-Wan to forgive himself and move closer into the light of the force. This also showed there is still good in Vader, and he is still a complicated person.
In the beginning of the series, Obi-Wan had placed himself in purgatory, by the end, he was on a path towards enlightenment.

In it's entirety the battle between Obi-Wan and Vader was truly heart breaking. But from a technical stand point it was a phenomenal light saber dual. And Obi-Wan proves that he doesn't need the high ground, lol. This battle has two parts, Obi-Wan accepting that he must face Vader even if it means his death and Vader going full power against him. Then Obi-Wan tapping into his love for all those around him and going OP on Vader and proving he still is the Master, and Vader is just a padiwan. And yes, when you factor in the dialogue, the acting, the music, and what it means to each character the fight is truly heartbreaking. But it is definitely the highlight of the whole series.

He sees Obi-Wan getting away. He is obsessed. It really did make him make stupid mistakes. The Emperor was right to doubt him. Since these baby rebels got away, a full-blown rebellion formed, many Jedi survived and some almost killed Vader in the comics. His need to win blinds him.
I see now that Reva was the redemption that Obi-Wan could never get for Anakin. She is chasing Luke as Obi is fighting his father. Her choice NOT to kill a youngling, her choosing mercy over vengeance freed her. Had Anakin made the same choice, imagine what his life would be like. Through that scene with Reva, Obi-Wan finally got to save a youngling/padawan - even if it wasn't his own. He could put his guilt about not being able to save Anakin behind him for good. I didn't know that where they were taking her. I saw the parallel between her and Vader early on, but this redemption is especially sweet after the duel.

It seems to me that Star Wars goes out of its way to reward their fans. Maybe not all the time, but most of the time. I think all of these series on Disney+ have done a great job of giving back to the fans. Of the live action Star Wars series on Disney+, the Obi-Wan Kenobi series is by far my favorite. Yes, even better than the Mandalorian. If Ahsoka can touch this a year from now, I’ll be set for life. This finale hit me in every emotional spectrum possible. Deborah Chow did an amazing job.

@@Tronblue007 I've read that when actors do uncredited roles, they basically do it pro bono. He probably just did the scene without compensation, because it's well known he loved being in Star Wars and probably was just happy to reprise the role for this small instance. I'm sure he's getting compensated for his forthcoming work in the new series he's in, so maybe this was all part of that package deal, too! 😅😅

    @lwnasidh Před 2 lety +29

I took Reva hunting Luke as having figured out that "the children" were Anakin's from the way Bail Organa spoke of them... so her desire to kill Luke was to kill Anakin's child as a way of feeling she was punishing Anakin... not just because she wanted to punish Obi-wan or just want to kill someone. It makes her placing Luke in her role as youngling and herself in Anakin's role as assassin more meaningful, IMO.

That apology at the end... That hit so hard... Obi spent that whole time thinking he had failed Anikin, when it was Anikin who was the one to fail Obi... He allowed himself to be given in by the Dark Side. A kid who was once filled with light and hope became sinical, and a coward. Instead of confronting his fear, and his guilt, he gave in and coward to it. Always looking for others to make him feel better about how shitty he felt. First Obi, the Palpatine, who he now gives his "loyalty" to, thinking what...? That things will get better? All that wasted potential to make change... To live the life he had originally wanted with Padame and his children, gone. I don't feel sorry for Anikin. Never have. Never will.
