And remember, life is a lot more fun Over on the Wild Side! - Zábava
Correction: the drop cloth tarp is 12x16 not 16x20.
Looking forward to watching your camping videos. I also, do period camping during the summer on my property. I constructed a lean-to / trapper style shelter, in the early 19th century fashion.
That sounds excellent, glad to hear that others are doing historical camping.
Great job brother! I dig the saddle! I took had a 45+ lb rig on my horse, I felt guilty every time I put it on her. Then sit my fat truck driver a$$ in it! Fit and trim now.
Chomp'n at the bit for spring.
Funny " my life is camping"!
Congrats on getting fit and trim! Spring can’t get here soon enough.
I always like to see what folks take when they go out; there's generally some overlap, but often there's an item that I hadn't thought of, and I have an "Ah HA!" moment! I recently picked up a folding saw at work; and, while I haven't taken it out yet, I played with it outside, and it's looking like it'll be really handy! I also picked up a "Mountain Man 'Mouse-Hawk'" for a belt hatchet, and it really took an edge well, especially after stropping it. I keep thinking that You should look for an A. Uberti "Remington New Model Army Cartridge Conversion" Replica Revolver for your 1860s Persona, either in .45 Colt's or .44WCF ( what I have ). I recall seeing a photo of an original "Gunsmith Conversion" in .45 Colt's, although more authentic would be .44 Remington CF. I got the .44WCF ( not authentic ) for cartridge commonality with my A. Uberti Henry Rifle. I've seen these replica revolvers as low as $499, second hand. Just a thought. Have Fun! MTM
Stropping a hatchet is pretty legit! Haha I just use a file or swing harder.
I’ve looked into conversions but I believe they all need 850fps or less rounds which I was kind of disappointed about.
But also they’re past my 1860 timeframe. I’d like to use my percussion revolvers once I shoot them enough to see that they’re reliable. Otherwise I’ll just carry my 1873 even though it’s the wrong timeframe.
Stropping really brings a hatchet into its own. The SAA is a dandy, even the modern iterations. My "First Real Sixshooter" was a Replica ( Lyman ) Remington NMA .44 Percussion; reliable, with decent power, and very accurate!
@@matthewtmarfield7861 that was my first as well, except Pietta. It had that telltale Pietta front site where it was off by about 7 or 8 degrees. I had to compensate for that but I still hit the poker card first try.
@@matthewtmarfield7861 I look forward to getting a tomahawk for a hatchet, one that’s hand forged and I’ll have to remember to try sharpening it with a strop.
Nice gear list. Looking forward to the camp trip and how you work that tarp.
Nate
Good video. Well thought out camping kit.
When it comes to keeping the animals comfortable and safe, I don’t feel like you are in any way being inauthentic to the goal of “period appropriate” gear with a modern saddle pad etc… just like the camera gear doesn’t count. Really looking forward to seeing the tarp setups.
Thank you Kristen, I pretty much feel the same. However if I can make them comfortable and be historical, that’s the goal. Camera gear will stay modern no matter what though haha
I am looking forward to your adventure!! I always like seeing what gear you got and how you prepare to rough it.
Thanks Morg
Looks good!
thanks for inspiring me to get out and do some primitive/ bushcraft style camping with a new baker style tent
You could use your other tarps as “Fly’s” over your canvas tent structure to assist in weather issues. There is hundred’s of historical photos of this set-up. God bless!
I’d like to see the photos. All I’ve seen are fly’s used as A-frame set ups.
Been experimenting using oil based "Spar Urethane" to waterproof cotton canvas, works great but expensive $60/gallon, cotton soaks it up, drys, then seals so water won't penetrate the fibers, still flexible. You can use latex paint over the canvas but latex won't waterproof it, has to be sealed first. The only glue I found that will work on canvas is "JB WELD" 2 part, put a very thin coat on both pieces than press together overnight, as long as it is a thin layer, you can still roll up canvas.
Wow interesting… something to think about. I’ve heard polyurethane is easily the best solution but I was avoiding it due to the historical aspects.
I may just do it though. At least for my huge winter canvas. Still thinking it over though, thanks for the ideas.
Yea do a month long in the mountains 👍
I love these videos! Thanks!
Excellent kit, Richard!
Thanks Rob!
Nice list , reminded me that I need to update mine , and get at reorganizing my gear. Looking forward to your camping videos
It’s the next best thing to camping! Thanks
Awesome content Richard!!!
Thanks Peter!
@OverOnTheWildSide you're very welcome my friend!!
That’s sick man 😅
I use painter drops for camping set ups it seems to work well i used them all winter so far no waterproof yet lol
Oh i have been damp a few times my foam pad has kept me a flote in the bad rain ,ya real type 2 fun this is ,thank you for sharing,
Haha “type 2 fun”, and good to hear your experiences.
Ive always been interested in the hope/texas saddles. Ive ridden alot in McClellans(reenacting) and modern(wrangling/training) but never tried a hope style. Trying to track down 2 trees to make a hope and a 1870s style
Have you checked Bowden for a Hope tree? I like my McClellan saddle quite a bit but really glad to have this one.
@@OverOnTheWildSide I will have to check in on that. Kinda new to leather working. Done some holsters belts etc. Not familiar with saddles outside of basic repairs. But always wanted to try to build one. Thanks for the lead
That’s a nice set up man, over the years I’ve ditched alot of stuff and came to my “minimal gear” but it’s still heavy to carry lol at 40-60lbs, 60 lbs and up are “winter time tho “, clothes and blankets always add up, any more I mostly try to just wear the same stuff out in the bush, maybe a extra set for a longer trip, definitely extra socks and underwear if nothing else of course lol, ya just a pot/pan and i have the same coffee pot lol, well mines ceramic covered, is yours tin? I’m longing to get out lol, I’ve been getting out just not staying out lol, good luck man, happy trails, everything is coming back to life
My coffee pot is stainless. Eventually I’ll get a tin one.
Your winter gear shouldn’t be more than 30lbs… or not more than 40.
@@OverOnTheWildSide it just depends on what I’m carrying, I got a metal framed backpack, and two wool blankets for if it’s really cold, or I’ll just wear wool to lighten the load, and I carry actual food, like taters, rice, meat sometimes or canned meat, peppers 🫑, squash, spices, and water adds up, most times it’s around 40-50lbs, each time I pack up and weigh myself for a camping trip, it use to be more when I first started lol, it doesn’t help my military pack properly weights over 10lbs on it’s own lol
@@outdoorvideoswithbrad oh man you’re wearing me out just reading about it haha
But I know you like doing your own thing so no judgement here.
@@OverOnTheWildSide I was gonna add, it doesn’t help that I’m hard on myself lol just to make myself stronger, and if SHTF I know I can carry everything besides the kitchen sink haha, i know the horses pain lol jk
@@outdoorvideoswithbrad haha I hear you! That’s good prepping.
Do you use anything for light at night, and how many rounds of ammo do you usually carry for black powder revolvers?
I usually use my iPhone flashlight however the goal is to not use it.
Now that the days are getting longer that will be easier. I have candles and I’d like to get a lantern that I can use animal fat in.
I haven’t really start carrying my percussion revolvers yet. I don’t carry a lot of rounds, if I actually need it it won’t take many and if it does well, a revolver likely won’t be enough anyway.
You are making my life nicer by the minute. Do a super thanks or give me your address.
I don’t know how to do super thanks. I have the PayPal and Patreon links in the description. I think those allow a super thanks type thing…?
@@OverOnTheWildSide copy that. I don't use either even for my favorite shows. I know ytub gets a bunch of it. It's a struggle.
@@DanielESmith-iz7lx yes exactly, I’ve heard YT takes 30% so I just don’t even want to be a part of that.
@@DanielESmith-iz7lx I really appreciate that you mentioned it, not to be cheesy but the thought counts.
