    No he is no talking about drugs. They didn't call drugs "candy" in the 60's and he would of never told anyone. Drugs was called "smack", "dust", "juice". All kids in that era loved candy. Mary Jane, Squirrel Nut, Almond Joy, Jawbreakers, Good & Plenty, Boston Baked Beans, Zero Bars, etc. He would of never discuss his drug problem with people, in fact no one knew he was on drugs until the signs started to show.       Some would beg to differ. Michael Jackson and Frankie Lymon were both stars in their own right. They were appropriate for their times; Michael Jackson was the Frankie Lymon of the 70s and Frankie Lymon was the Michael Jackson of the 50s.

    This interview reminds me of growing up in the 60s & 70s. No one taught me how to present myself. I learned from watching great men and great women in person, on TV, and on film. I miss many things about the days of old.

    It’s an absolute, straight-up tragedy that someone couldn’t have gotten a positive hold on Frankie’s personal life and career and helped him navigate life’s changes. Watching this in hindsight is all out sad….what a talent wasted! 😢😢

    Likely he wasn't doing heroin yet; he hadn't degenerated to that point yet. He was smoking marijuana, though, by his own admission in an interview article in Ebony Magazine in 1967 he had been smoking marijuana since he was in junior high school, which means he would have been 13/14 years old, about the same age when this 1956 interview was held.

      Frankie was introduced to those harmful substances at around 12 years old by an older woman.
      This was very common at that time in New York.
      That older woman was a PROSTITUTE.

      Not really. In 1956 $27 was a lot of money, especially for a kid. $27 in 1956 would be like about $200 or more in today's money.

      That would be $305 in today’s money. Times that by 4. Since he got paid weekly. That’s $1’220 a month. For a 13 year which he was. That’s more than enough. Also. Things back then cost less today. Gas was only $0.33 cents. A full McDonald’s meal was less than $2. Milk was $0.25. Minimum wage was around $3.75. So. It was good money back then. And as he said. He was buying burgers. Which was around $.30. Or less in some places.

Read books like 'Manchild In the Promised Land' and 'Run Baby Run', which described what the 50s was like for kids in the inner city.
