there will never be another like Etta James...she was definitely a one-off, in the best possible way. And her approach to singing, was to just give herself to the song. There were no runs or note-wiggling, with her. She was more of a surgical interpreter of song...which is to say, "less was more' with her. She knew when the lyric needed her to belt..she knew when the lyric needed her to lay back on a note. And she knew when an upbeat tune, needed her kind of energy. She was a singer's singer...and a total pro.

Etta's father is from Illinois , A small mining town where I live. Minnesota Farts was his name. The best pool player in the world. He had my boyfriend stand on milk crates as a small child so he could reach the pool tables , he taught my boyfriend to shoot pull as good as he did. When my boyfriend took me out to the bars he would make thousand dollar bets on the pool tables and win every time. People would gather round the pool table and watch him run the table. I was only 17 at the time with a fake I.D. my boy friend was 21. Those was the good old days of my youth. All those pool games was here in local bars in southern Illinois. We never knew Etta James was Minnesota Fats child cause he never mentioned her . FATS played pool all over the world. But his home was here with us coal mineing people. TYPO ERROR....meant to spell FATS not farts , also POOL not pull.
