Madame Spivy LeVoe, aka Bertha Levine (1906-1971) was an entertainer, nightclub owner and actress. This song, with music by Spivy and lyrics by Everett Marcy, was recorded for her 78 album Seven Gay Sophisticated Songs (1939). Madame Spivy ran a legendary chic gay piano bar called Spivy’s Roof that was profiled in the book Gay New York and is mentioned in several other memoirs about notable gay personalities at that time. Some of her later acting work included roles in The Manchurian Candidate, Requiem For A Heavyweight, The Fugitive Kind (with Marlon Brando) and Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

I have just come across this interview with Ms James. What a lady!!!! Here in the UK, BBC 4 is showing footage of the Montreux jazz festival and her first appearance in 1975. Her sublime version of Somethin's gotta hold on me plus her tremendous backing musicians is a testimony to all this incredibly modest lady would go on to achieve.. .. The Sublime Ms Etta James.
