    That taxi driver reminded me of an elderly crossing guard I knew in Daegu. I lived in Korea for 4 years and saw him every morning. We’d have conversations in Korean while I waited for the light to change on my way to work. On my last day of work, I told him I’d be leaving going back to America and he cried and we talked for almost an hour. The parting words he gave still make me cry to this day. I had never received such kind words of praise… It was as if he were a father sending off his child. The elderly really do adopt you as your own, even if it just for a little while. That taxi driver really reminded me of my ajusshi.

While he wished I didn't have to go, he said he supported me in the next part of my life story. No one would be shocked and amazed because so many countries speak English as a second language, it isn't unusual and it is taken for granted. My mother was like you in reverse. She grew up in Java Jakarta around the time of WWll. Her Family were ethnic Chinese merchant class so she grew up with servants and of course spoke Mandarin and Indonesian but was taught English by British nuns from a very early age. Also because Indonesia was a Dutch Colony she learned Dutch and it was spoken a lot around her. It was expected from her class within the society. She could really speak Dutch well. When my ex-wife and I took her to the Netherlands to visit family she was excitedly speaking Dutch to everyone who'd converse with her! I should point out that my mom is one of the smartest people I've known in my life. Constantly voraciously reading retaining everything huge vocabularies and perfect pronunciation. My mom never sounded Asian (not that that's bad when she arived in America in 1954 never to return to Asia she spoke English with an English accent because of the British Nuns. What's funny though is that she always had these ingrained mannerisms and way of laughing that I heard Dutch women replicating 🤷 funny. So I'm 63 and my Mom died in 2010.

    I just finished a summer job as a Leader for groups of Japanese students (there was a Chinese group, but they couldn't make it), and it was a dream job. I got to work on my Japanese, make friends from all around Japan, and show them what Vancouver and the surrounding area has to offer. We even got a free week of Japanese lessons! All the agents and students were really kind, and were really impressed with my Japanese (and height, of course 😂) to the point that one of the agents started talking to me a lot in Japanese (I could understand what she said most of the time, but I can hardly form sentences, so it was interesting). I felt really encouraged, and it forced me to talk to people and get out of some of my comfort zones. It was a beautiful experience. I'm so grateful for all of the culture they shared.

    You are such an inspiration to me. I discovered your videos a few months ago and I think you're honestly incredible. I learned French and Spanish at university over twenty years ago. I never thought of asian languages as something thats accessible to westerners (I'm English) but I've recently met a couple from Bangladesh and started learning Bangla a month ago. I absolutely love it and they are amazed at how fast I am picking it up. You showed me this could be possible ❤ keep up the great work.

    It's funny seeing you use mainland Chinese in Taiwan
    For example, one difference is the word for taxi which in China is 出租車 but in Taiwan is 計程車
    So cool tho

      @OrientalPearl  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Yeah, they can always tell I studied on the mainland. Since I used to work in Taiwan I still remember some of their special words. Usually I switch the vocab to fit what they're used to hearing in Taiwan.

    I mean no offense, but I want you to know that I'm unsubscribing because of the pleads you make for financial support. You initially live your lifestyle separately from CZcams. It is not because of CZcams that you are able to place yourself into these environments. You have documented a lifestyle that you were already able to afford. Your language prowess is far more than enough for you to find meaningful work, so I am unimpressed by your resolve. Patrons of your endeavors do so because they wish to support you. They do not support you because they patron your endeavors. There's a level of integrity that I think you should value- behind those patrons and this does not require a request from them. It is certainly impressive to see the excitement of the locals and to see their reaction to the token linguistics of a western woman, but I think that it is more important to share the cultures and draw attention to the experiences that others could have, if afforded the opportunity to be in your place.

    I recently found your videos. They are a joy to watch the native speaking folk amazed by your talent for language. Without seeing you speak in most of the videos, I would swear that it is a native person speaking. My daughter speaks French fluently and it was my great joy last year to travel to Paris together and watch her converse with Parisians and their amazement that an American spoke French so well. Your family must be so proud.

I recently went to the Catholic world youth day in Portugal and used Mandarin, Cantonese that I've learned for a long time(as I also have attended a Chinese Church for over a year in order to learn in a proper environment), and then some Korean. And I met with tons of people from all these places and spoke to them. They were soo happy, I made tons of friends and I got so many gifts 😃
