You could get a scratch stone used for testing precious metals. You just scratch the edge of the bar against the stone to get a line of metal powder and put the acid on the stone. That way, no acid spot on the bar. If it's just silver plated, it will also detect if there's copper under the silver plate.
You really took one for the team there and I appreciate it. I just received a very large number of rounds from a reputable billion dealer and they all failed the ping test. I just ordered some acid and wanted to see other people results. Good work man!
I don't like to do destructive testing on my coins and bars. You can use an accurate scale to see if it's exactly the weight that it should be, plus use a neodymium magnet to test if it's real. Best is to buy from a trusted dealer.
+AbuserTube Specific gravity tests are also very effective, worst that happens is the metal gets wet. Magnet is effective if a fake is not copper core, as the diamagnetic effect is similar. Agree with trusted dealer, everyone (interested in precious metals) should know their local bullion and coin dealers.
Lord Knightyme True, but if the core is copper, then the weight would be wrong for the size of the coin or bar. So if you do both, weighing it and the magnet test, it should get rid of at least most fakes.
ive heard no end of jewellers use acid test on coins or bars etc which i know can be dammaging and reduces the value but does any jeweller that uses such a test declare so to a customer ?
Thanks for showing us how to test for silver. I bought 4 one Troy ounce silver on Ebay and I have no way of testing them out. I looked to see if they had 100 ratings and read the feedbacks. I can only trust them. My dad told me that pure silver is softer and melts faster. I have no clue. He also said that they turn black over time in jewelries. Now a days I don't know my true silver . Some of the bracelets and earring and rings I purchased as gifts . They turn black overtime. I was told that was real silver. There was 2 item that turned greenish over time. I was told that was not pure silver. It was probably mixed with alloy or zinc.
You commented tat you destroyed the Maple, I disagree as the only value it has IS the silver, all you did was confirmed that the coin is real, keep on stackin😄
You can buff those burn marks out with a drill buffer or electronic buffer. Just may take some work, no worries at the very least wait till they hit $40 an ounce again and just sell them for scrap ! ;-)
I don't have that silver acid I only have that gold testing acid from 10 to 14 to 18 carrot they said with sterling silver it should turn blue with 99.9 per cent purity or what colors should the acid turn
I get a kick out of some people that buy certain kinds of silver bars with limited addition on them, basically you have a limited addition of absolutely nothing, it's just silver lol.
If you don't want to use acid, you can do definitive tests with neodymium magnets (out of a hard drive) and digital scales. I have a two vids up showing the procedure.
The acid test you did were so generous of you to sacrifice your silver to do. It was painful to watch you acid test those large bars as it also makes it less valuable for you if you decide to resell them at some point. Thank you for the education.
your saying tom smiths silver is legit. your name is john paul with only 1 youtube video. tell me something isn't fishy!sounds like someone has been making up names...

This guys vid stands out as more of a plug for tom smith than a debunk of fakes. Didnt mean to offend. Keep stackin. 👊
+MN TreasureDiver Bright Red = Fine Silver (.999) Dark Red = Sterling or Coin (.925 or .900) Brown = Silver (.800) Blue = Copper Green = Brass Turquoise = Nickel
This is why I use a sharp knife and shave the tiniest little shavings to test my silver bullion. :) or I use a scratcher board... sometimes it doesnt work tho
+Andres Agredo Pretty much $0 lost on the spot price (current price at the time, typically updated every 30-60 minutes while stock market is open). 1oz of silver is still 1oz of silver after the acid test. I think you are asking about what is called numismatic value (typically coins or rarer sought out bars), and premium, being the amount someone will pay over the spot price of silver, in that case you can say bye bye to that, but the actual metal value remains. Some real rare bars can be many times the spot price, 10x is not uncommon. Let's say the spot price is $21 (around the current Australian $ for 1 oz silver), and I have a coin or bar from a respected mint, Perth Mint in Australia or Royal Canadian, in, well Canada, I would probably pay a good $9 more, for a total of $30 for that ounce of silver. Before the acid test I could get $30 back for that bar, after the acid test, $21 or the spot price, as the numismatic / premium value is gone.
Funny. I searched for the user Tomsmith196012 on eBay and there is no user by that name. This raises a big red flag. Did this person lose their account for fraud? Hmmm
instead of destroying your silver why don't you just buy the stone that comes with acid and use that instead? I will give junk price for that silver lol thanks for video I just hate seeing that silver being done like that
Deplorable Dorothy didn't destroy it it's still worth its weight in silver. Plus it seems like he's trying to prove his silver is real and guide people to his eBay store
Explosive Diarrhoea I dont think the man is silly at all. here's why unless you have expensive xray equipment you have absolutely no way other than acid to detect counterfeit silver or gold. sure you can ping it you can magnet test it but that doesn't give you purity test so how do you suppose you re going to know other wise? my advice stop buying gold and silver for collectibility and buy for its content not it's looks. because when you get ready to sell that how is it you suppose the people buying are going to test it. it's silly not to test it
suspect is right, advertising for that ebay account as real, which is prob fake. and u don't even tell us were u bought the your identifiable fake pieces.thats more important info to have.
This reminds me of the old Witch Test in medieval times , if she sinks she isn't a witch! Let me pour out some liquor for that impeccable silver that is no longer with us. Thank you for this video!
What is the point of this... There are way better ways to test that will prevent you from losing so much metal and destroying the premium value. Basically all of your silver is only worth spot price.
Fishy i don't see someone doing this for no reason other that financial gain. I hope you saved the worlds most expensive face cloth and listed that on the TomSMith 196012 store also. #Clickbaitadd Also thats probably not what he'd send. Ships from China.
coin colletors that complain about appearances of silver are having a duck right now. I giggle about it. I've seen people have an absokute come apart about flaws in silver and gold. I'm over here like ummm how do you know you have real silver or gold of your not testing this stuff? what ya think is gonna happen when you go to sell it? companies even drill large gold bars Lol bet you change your mind in a hurry buying because it's pretty instead of content after that.😂
Thanks for sacrificing such nice coins to teach us about the use of acids to verify precious metals.

Thanks for nuking your bars in providing such a great demo. Appreciate it!
What if I apply a metal polish liquid to an acid-eaten part of a silver surface?
Will it remove the scar that the acid has done to the silver surface?

These bar/coin have a proof finish. There is definately a plus value only for the workship on these bar/coin
is this acid test destructive to the silver coins and bars?
is he really using an angle grinder?
what is the brand name of the acid you used to test your silver.

Scratch stone is best.....
Is there any other substance to test the bar without any damage
If you don't want to use acid, you can do definitive tests with neodymium magnets (out of a hard drive) and digital scales. I have a two vids up showing the procedure.
This video was like watching a man burn his house down to kill a bothersome fly
If I have an opportunity to buy 999% silver 4000 grams for 1000 is that an good price?
very nice test well done!

how much did u get the 10 gram bar from tomsmith
Thanks for the test!
Can you do it one more time on each bar? I don't think you did it enough times. :-)
Plus he didn't use the grinder enough. LOL
they are beautiful coins too bad that solution left little marks on them , nice of you showing us
very good helpful video.thanks for sharing
Great video but the big bars could be drilled out and rods added. Need X-ray for that.
your saying tom smiths silver is legit. your name is john paul with only 1 youtube video. tell me something isn't fishy!sounds like someone has been making up names...
Joe Martinez, or he is like all other regular CZcams viewers with random names. Like Joe Martinez. Lol I wonder how common that name is.
Bewildering Truth Seeker i think what he's saying is John Paul is Tom Smith

How about using a test stone instead of damaging the metals face
That big 100 oz bar could possibly have lower quality metal core.
You should renane your video- How to destroy your silver by pouring acid on it.
This is the way I test all my silver. Grind it to a fine powder then give it an acid bath. lol
It will be easier just to buy from respectable sellers instead.
I hope you get to buy more silver with the money you made from this video. A great sacrifice for the sake of information ....
i have a tough time with silver acid tests, very confusing colors and results, never sure if they are acurate

Dark Red = Sterling or Coin (.925 or .900)

Will 950 silver turn red also ? If no, what color will it turn?
can you grind down the big bars to?
Lol
This is why I use a sharp knife and shave the tiniest little shavings to test my silver bullion. :) or I use a scratcher board... sometimes it doesnt work tho
Bewildering Truth Seeker I was wondering the same thing but I guess for the purposes of CZcams it doesnt hurt to ruin a few Oz for all the viewers
Steven Sager i guess so :P
Whyd you just destroy all that silver?
Very good...thanks..
Why am I getting the feeling you're EBay's "tomsmith"?? 😆
I'm pretty sure this type of testing solution contains potassium dichromate to give the colors.
Pretty sure this is an ad lol. Well done though good marketing
most expensive trolling ever??
Even you are unsure
Blue its fake silver not 925s?
Without a face mask, you are really taking a serious risk with fine silver particles as you grind. Would use a jewelers beveled drill bit instead.
Does the solution actually puts a deep hole onto each bar?
yes. One of the stupidest things I've ever seen on the internet.
Deplorable Dorothy you'd be surprised how many pawn shops test like this.
MAD MAN..
so how much the acid destroy the value of the real silver?

why didn't you just cut them in half instead of grinding them
So how much of your assets should be in hard assets - gold, silver, palladium? A range is ok brah!
+Bob Sides Usually about 10%
+themanginaman Thank you so very much. Does it matter the mix? Gold / silver / Platinum / palladium? Or just the hard asset?
Bob Sides I would only recommend silver and gold. I buy an ounce of gold for ever 100 ounces of silver I have.
Thank you for the information. That solves a lot of my questions.
Just take it to a pawn shop and try to sell by the weight and purity. Guaranteed free test without ph-ucking up your investment.
There's better ways to test than to destroy..jeez it hurts..

this dude must hate silver
instead of destroying your silver why don't you just buy the stone that comes with acid and use that instead? I will give junk price for that silver lol thanks for video I just hate seeing that silver being done like that
next time use a drill so you can retain the metal loss
This is without a doubt the most ridiculous video on CZcams. This needs a much wider audience (for entertainment purposes!)
lol,how about nuke testing them? a little overkill with the grinder. ever hear of a file.
WHAT THE FUCK?? You can test silver without destroying it.
Forget the acid test .
who buys silver bars with Chinese lettering? LOL
+themanginaman i will buy it
There are less drastic ways to check your silver collection, just saying..
why deface and devalue your metals? Do a specific gravity test it's the best test without buying an expensive preciouse metals verifier.
For me I acid test before buying with the stone
