  • Changing the worn out and beat up knives in my handheld electric planer. I use this for general flattening and shaping, but nothing that requires a high level of dimensional precision, therefore I'm not overly concerned if the knives are not perfectly set.

I have an almost identical planer by another well known bright yellow brand. Excellent machine which was instrumental in many of my larger projects. Life was good and I was going to get married and have kids and retire with some meaningful time left in this body. Then the blades needed adjustment. I realized I didn’t have the alignment jig that it came with so I macgyvered one which worked amazingly well, and allowed for me to adjust to an actual zero. Long story short don’t throw away the stuff that comes with new power tools because your macho ego deems it to be unnecessary gimmicky junk.

I think you kind of missed the point I was making. Also, I don't think guys throw away the gimmicky junk that comes with the planer, they just don't bother to read the instructions to find out what it is :)

Love your humor John.......that is ONE of the reasons this makes a great channel....BUT not to mention that you have GREAT ideas on methods/procedures/knowledge of your trade. Never would have thought to put the cord under the planner to clear the blade. Keep up the great work......

I have the Bosch professional version, it only has a single reversible blade, as opposed to your Makita with 2, however the Bosch produces a near perfect finish ranging from 0 to 2.6mm smallest measurable depth I can get is 0.1mm & the bonus is, as planer blades usually come in packs of 2, they last twice as long. I'm more than happy with it.

John John John, sometimes you can be really funny. You must have been in good spirits for this one. Maybe because it was just going to be short and not a project, off the cuff so to speak. The “dust mask” and “you can’t see it , just believe me” were a laugh! Thanks for sharing and giving me a little humor today!

Yeah I was wondering that myself. I thought maybe he recorded it in SD but the video was uploaded in 1080 and the resolution is there. Maybe he's hiding a future project in the bared out area is my only guess.

My Porter Cable plane had one of those flap things. The most annoying thing ever when you're trying to plane until I removed it.

I still have two of those planers with cutter guards they’re ok ish, you really need two hands to ready the guard( like some circ saws) they’ve had about twenty years light use and still do what they are for. Mine were made by AEG and seem robust enough. Like a lot of people I started with the marvellous ELU but couldn’t put up with those heavy resharpenable single end blades (no diamond plates then!)

They sell a $19 alignment gauge block for the N1900B to set the adjustment screws on the blade holders. I don't have one so I used a caliper to set the blade holders to 32.5mm and that seems to be okay. I would be curious to know what that measurement is after using the $19 gauge block.

I don't have a plug in charger for my cameras, they charge with them in the camera over usb. I leave the camera and Atomos in the shop, and bring in the camera battery, the battery for the Atomos and the hard drive and charge the camera battery in another camera.

This would be a useful vid if I could actually see what you’re talking about, what with you waving it about and standing so far from the camera I learned very little unfortunately. I’m in need of help with setting up my Elu plane as each blade is at a different height and I’m finding it hard to get it set up correctly.

flatten a rough slab or table top, plane the edge of a door or table, taper a leg, chamfer an edge quickly, flush a wall, shave the edge of plywood to make it fit. Once you know how to use this tool, there are so many uses that you cant do with any other tool.
