- Watch part II, "Learn 7 Steps to Jedi Mind Focus": • 7 Jedi Mind Tricks to ... Embark on the adventure of my crazy experiences in the working world, recorded live. Thanks for being patient about my videos, working on my health at the moment! Fight for the users in our Discord: discordapp.com/invite/CKYwgxA
Sorry for the different show formats lately (lots of live shows), I will be working on my "regular" format video soon - but had to put my health first so I wanted to get something out for you guys either way :)
This is great! It's very informal and comfortable.
You're very good at articulating your point when you don't have pressure on you.
Kinda diggin it.
Ummmmmm. ....I'm one of those people that actually enjoys micro-managing. Wierd huh?
Hope to sit in on a live session with you Nixie.
I pray for your health as well.
lol@roaming the Earth burping and farting!
Been there, done that and still doing it! ;-)
I miss the geeky tech vids ;) But like your openness about stuff happening in your life. :)
Start by setting yourself goals that are easy to achieve e.g. a Q&A video once a month.
hey, thanks for coming back, was waiting for your videos, thanks for this video
T³ Tips Tricks Tests
I have been doing that one at least :D
I am so sorry to hear about your surgery. I did that last year after thinking I had a cold, I was placed in the hospital, flown to the home Florida Hospital at Rollins one Monday afternoon and had a surgeon already waiting for me. They drained 2.2 litres of fluid from around my heart. That was a year ago. I am still getting over it.
I can't thank you enough for all the help you have given me regarding Linux. I started building PC's in 2004 when I figured out that I did not like what I was getting from Microsoft. There were Linux magazines .... but they were early Linux magazines ... like CroMagnon Linux magazines. But I went ahead and loaded my first build with Red Hat. Then there was Mandrake, then Mandriva, then Ubuntu and I have settled on Linux MInt. I use the terminal like some people write books. I am not afraid and I have you to thank for it. Get well....already. I am subscribed and waiting for your next kernels of good chear ... for real ... I could be your grandfather already!

“One should not pursue goals that are easily achieved. One must develop an instinct for what one can just barely achieve through one’s greatest efforts.”
― Albert Einstein
Good to see you back, wondered where you had gone :)
Have you ever done something just to make your parents proud sacrificing even your happiness?
This is it! Being educated with premises that you can or (most of the times) CAN'T do and being obligated to do what ur parent thinks is the best for you makes u avoid risks in the future.
Successful people break rules and creates new paradigms!
I heard a lot in my life that I wouldn't be able to do this or that. I heard people telling me to quit and try something else, and this is the other thing that makes us avoid risks.
The fact is: DO WHAT YOU LOVE TO no matter what people say!
You have a massive fanbase and it's a HUGE honor to be part of it!!!!
Keep doing your great job!
Yay new Nixie :) ignore the haters in these comments; those who produce nothing will always want to tear down those who produce something.
It is interesting how much of your perceptions and observations mirror my own, specifically for motivation. I am a project manager now (with a long background in network operations, IT, etc). So I get to tell people what needs to be done, set a schedule and get updates from everyone to ensure everything is getting done in the proper orders.
I miss the days of actually doing the work and getting shit done. I have run my own business and worked as a contractor, which I loved, but it requires you to be able to market yourself, which I am not particular good at.
Motivation is much easier when you have goals you want to achieve. When it is something you are not particularly invested in, it is difficult to keep up that motivation.
This is the exact problem that I've been going through for the past few years, it's torturous. Thank you for this video.
You're actually right motivations quite hard. Make yourself a shortlist at little time management finish up projects at a reward if you game or something good to go. Take care nixie can't wait to see you next video remind yourself that everything will work out in time.
Nixie, as long as your doing your personal best that's all you can do. My story is that I used to work for a company that used this "Matrix" program that technically is supposed to show what level of performance your on. But, I soon realized I couldn't control the amount of people coming into the company as customers, that wasn't my department. So what I did was I just stopped with their silly paperwork filling out daily things of what you did, I just stopped worrying about it altogether. Eventually I began loving the job and did twice the amount of work as other employee's.
I think it's nice to have a simple cut version from the live show, to cut out parts at least where there was a long time of waiting for people to get online or fix a technical problem
Well, I know my comment will mean nothing and has nothing to do about the video, but I just love your voice, Nixie. I've been following your channel for a long time and I can't get enough of it. I've learned a lot from your videos and my ears kindda created an empathy for your voice, so I could recognize your just listening to your videos. I won't even say how stunning you are because that's too obvious, but I can't help saying how I love your voice and how it calms me down, no matter the subject you are on... When you start to talk, for me it's like: "Oh, I know that girl!", so it's like you already are a part of my life somehow. By the way, I'm from Brazil, so sorry for my english. ; )
I can relate to what you're saying. I'm a programmer and a few months ago I quit my job because I felt like for a while I wasn't doing what I wanted to be doing with my time. So I started writing apps for Ubuntu Touch with no real finincial plan.. =) I also had a hard time staying motivated but it was fun. At the end I released an app to the store and people actually thought what I made was worth using which made me feel proud of myself.. I was offered a job a few weeks ago and I declined (because they wanted me to use Windows X_X), but then a new job opened up which actually seemed interesting to me and enabled me to be working in a team instead of by myself in a basement. I think working in a team helps me stay motivated. I plan on writing more apps/scopes for Ubuntu in my spare time.
Great channel no matter what subject your addressing, CARRY ON SOLDIER!
Hi Nixie, I'm glad you're back from Japan safe. It has been awhile since I've seen one of your videos. I just wanted to thank you for posting this video today. I'm glad I'm not alone. I'd like to share with you and fellow viewers what helps me get through the day. 1st, I love what I do, second, I set aside a time to play video games to clear my head. Third, I always remind myself why I am doing this self-employment thing in the first place and I stop worrying about where are others in life and stop comparing myself to them. As of right now, I feel a bit depress since I sometimes fall off my own path but thanks to your video, it help me recharge. I also recommend taking naps during the day; I am fortunate enough to have my office 10min from my home. Sometimes I take an hour nap, then eat lunch, and get back to work. Please disregard my Troll name, its my weird sense of humor.
Interesting story Nixie, I would say that I am a productive person and you are too but motivation is something that everyone has to work on from time to time. I can't wait to hear your 7 tips :)
Nixie Pixel Great video. I've recently realized it was time to go back to work for myself, and I also struggle with routine.
Once again you nailed it!!! LOL
This couldn't have come at a better time, maybe it's destiny. I watched the other video yesterday. I'll comment on it in a short while.
I want to say first, thank you for making this video, and second that it makes all the difference knowing that "self help" is coming from someone who's in the same boat as me. I've seen plenty of self help youtube videos and websites and it never seems to make any difference. I guess I don't know for sure that they ever actually struggled with anything and also how can I ever help them in return if they are so perfectly secure and in control...and I'm not.
PS. I have started using a great app for organization called isotimer (android), it has started to make a difference in reducing procrastinating and getting things done
You do not have to leave the house. I'm a freelancing software developer for about 7 years and there is only one thing really important:
Rythm and continuity. Get out of your bed at te same time every weekday, eat your breakfast and 'go to work'. Even if you don't have a project. Do whatever is 'work' related. Stop working when your workday is over, at around the same time every day. Have breaks and basically act as if you're in employement. This is how I stay motivated and force myself to be creative and productive. It really works and all you need is some discipline. Even if you don't have enough projects that generate income, it won't be because you're not motivated. The fact that you have this disciplined structure in place means that motivation is not the problem. If you don't have projects to work on you'll be borded, but you're only allowed to do work related stuff during work hours. So eventually you'll find a way to be productive and creative, out of boredom. Discipline and structure....
motivation for me is to just pick a subject and explore all about it.
You are a refreshing face on CZcams I know this is an older video and that you may not read this however it is worth saying you are worth so much to the community. Are niche group of people. Stay strong and never ever give up on your dreams.
How to get motivated.
List your bills.
List your goals.
List your dreams, what you want in this life.
Look at the lists often, even every morning.
You're an inspiration Nicole
I see so few videos that have part 2 or more and write the link in the description. Thanks for making my life a bit easier!
I nearly had a stroke when windows8 suggested I could improve performance by disabling "apps"..
Good stuff, and top marks for putting "ooh shiny!" in there :D
I've got that myself on my Webtop, for when JavaScript is disabled :)
It looks like you are incorporating life/success coaching into the mix. I can relate to MUCH of what you said, going all the way back to the report cards I got in school, and yet I am often the one that my friends come to for advice, encouragement, and a positive spin on life events. I like where you're taking this.
I'm happy about that, seriously. It's been rough to focus 300 % on Linux when that is only one aspect of my life! I wanted to be there for you guys in other capacities and I'm glad it's well received. ^_^
Nixie Pixel But of COURSE it is well-received. The bonus, and the selfish indulgence you get from it is that everything you teach, you reinforce in yourself to be a better version of you.
Likely already said Nixie Pixel but I can relate to your underachiever schooling. I had the same thing (intelligent but does not apply) on my report card, and so does my son. He is diagnosed with ADHD, and while I see the same things in myself, back in my day you were listed as a "dreamer" or "flakey". At least he is getting help.
Anyhow, you mentioned ADD at the end of this video. Have you ever looked into it for yourself? It also speaks to the motivation issues, and a lot of ADD and ADHD folks suffer from anxiety and depression as well. Food for thought.
hope your feeling well soon, Haven't had a chance to watch your stuff in the last few years sorry.
You are amazing nixie
Nixie Pixel Ur voice has changed !!!! its so bold like so well pitched!!!
Wishing You very good luck with Your Health Issues and a Safe and Happy Holiday Season!
Everyone I meet. Teachers, peers, coworkers... They have all more or less told me I was one of the most intelligent people they know. I just can't bring myself to apply myself to almost anything. I can do so much more with my life... But its incredibly difficult to even motivate myself at all.
My report card usually said, "If John would spend more time working, instead of daydreaming and looking out of the window, he could do better!" I read stuff like that and thought, "Reeeeeeeealy! ;)
Incidentally I still have my Oddworld: Abe's Oddesy and the box it came in!
I use the library from my old university to work. At home, I have too many distractions and it's very easy to let go.
If I had motivation I'd have released 15 or so more songs now.
Thanks. Great video. I think about this on my last months. After I will watch the next video about this. :D
You have opened a lot of yourself on your vidoes. THAT has helped you to cope with what you have been taught in this culture. How do you cope doing only one thing when you have 5000 others things running in your head? I know the feeling.
Depending on what I'm working, I usually wake up everyday, and set a goal for myself. Like, today, I need to finish my 3D bat for games, and get it up on my website. Totally doable. I just need to clean up some of the animation, and it needs a death animation, and bite.
Being self-employed is difficult. Not only because you are "wearing all the hats", as you've likely found- but mostly because of having to be motivated when you're not. I'd say that even people who love their chosen path's work will still get bored from time to time. Except- that when it's your bread & butter, you really cannot afford to be bored.
As your east-coast uncle stated-- you get up & you get dressed & ready. Doesn't matter if you're staying at home or not- you're basically setting a schedule that says, "it's time to get out of bed & get ready for work". A brain-train.
I recall reading a story once of a very high-profile business woman who took off to have a baby. She went from a totally pre-scheduled & full day to caring for an infant & no schedule. She said later it was the hardest thing she'd done. Without her schedule, she was barely able to meet the basic needs of her baby- let alone anything else.
Some people do best on a schedule composed by others, some are best not working for anyone else--- the rest are the middle-ground.
My personal advice is to set daily, short-term goals that are attainable. That way you make forward progress every day. That progress gives you the self-assuredness that can carry you when life deals you the occasionally sh*tty hand.
FWIW...I'm sure many here have their own methods to stay focussed.
Be well.
I was about to write a big text about how i get motivated but im just gonna leave this here :
" I'm Gonna carry that shit on my fucking back "
Yeah, I've been procrastinating more and more recently. It really is a struggle. I have not put on my pants yet. Maybe 2 hours later.
You've done a good job, Nixie. I have read about a number of writers who drove themselves by a disciplined regular habit of creating... Get up every day at 7am and work on show ideas for several hours... take stock of what you've done (so far) which has been successful, and think about why it has been successful. Also break things up...
Pretty Cool!
Sorry for being the girl here. But i like your hair, the colour is lovely. Sadly my hair isnt as straight or as pure of a colour as it was when i was your age. But to segway for a moment, im glad of any video you putout as I like to show people that a strong smart women can work in IT and that its not a male dominated field of study held only for men.. also your channel dispells peoples view that girls who work in the computer industry are plane, drab wool wareing geeks as your neither drab nor plane in fact your very attractive although the word geek has now become desirable the image is still less then appealing and thus your channel is rearly welcome in breaking down barriers. So thanks and take care of your self.
Wool-wearing geeks? I am afraid I do fit that mold, especially these somber winters in Seattle. :-) I see where you're going with this though, of course. I challenge you to make your own video, or podcast, or blog post -- the internet has brought us the greatest give of collaborative content creation! So, no matter your gender, creed, sexuality - get out there and create!
If you want another example to show off to your friends/family, look into Grace Murray Hopper. Amazing woman, and bloody hysterical - look up a YT vid of her explaining a nanosecond, just classic.
Look up TastyPC's channel, she definitely does not fit that mold. More of a hardware expert but her reviews are more in depth than any of the big players on youtube.
I've been working from home for the past two months. Oh, how hard it has been to get up early.
Just wanted you to know. Your loved!
I feel some sympathy from having similar evaluations of capability and motivation. Rather tangentially, I'm only partially paying attention, kind of like what got me through grade school. Your video helped with getting some of the cardboard boxes cluttering my room broken down. What I've noticed about a lot of procedures to follow to improve productivity (self help, management schemes, etc...) Is, like you said, you have an already successful individual/organization that basically says "Here's what works for me/us, maybe it will work for you", but you will probably do it wrong, because you are not me/us. On the topic of advice, The best thing I've found is to simply make recognizable progress toward my goal, because my motivation hooks in when I start to get somewhere. Now if I could just keep the motivation when I get close to finishing.
I work from home as a network engineer. I am still in shock that I got this lucky in life.
I am definitely where you are right now but I have a job that I do not like because I am going to school, just trying to pay for gas right now. The Struggle is real.
Before action can happen A plan Helps .... and as geeks its fun to mind map ideas out visually. I just find it helps, i use it for project management.
Willpower.
It starts really, small. I mean really small.
Wake up, NOW, not later. Eat this, not that thing you were putting in the microwave. Doing things that are rewarding.
Every time you exercise it, and it pays off, you willpower will increase. Repeat, ad nauseum.
Pitfalls:
1) Giving in - will power requires will power. A single victory is great, but a war is won with many battles, not one.
2) 'Staying at it' - you don't have to win everything, in fact, there should probably be something you give in to. It makes it easier to not give in to everything else.
3) Climbing Mnt Everest when you can barely get out to the gym. - Not to say that you shouldn't focus on your strengths and exercise them, but nothing is more demoralizing that biting off more than you can chew. Better to start small.
If you can do those things, you can be motivated. Motivation comes with willpower.
nixie we've been missing you :(
Perhaps an involuntary resistance against the money world? Resistance is so draining, it prevents you from doing stuff you perhaps should be doing at that point. Familiar?
No worries, just keep at it.
I have read 7 habits, when doing my MBA, I think the thing is, just start somewhere... and keep on going on. Find out what it is that YOU like and CAN do, and DO IT.... Yes, life is not always sunshine and roses.... but what is? You will find a way.
you are not alone.....
please, please do a video about the answers you got!!!!!!!!
my boyfriend is selfemployed, working at home. it doesn´t work out that great. i am soon to be selfemployed and am really struggeling with sitting down and "doing". to much distractions. i guess one tip would be, also if it´s not directly helping to do more, but to feel better is, to just accept the fact that humans are not made for that amount of different complex tasks. this is overwhealmning. and that´s ok to. you don´t have to validate your existence. still, i would liek to hear a follow up.
All you can do is keep moving forward.
great home base studio
"You have a lot of passion and drive but you just don't apply yourself." I've heard the same thing my whole life. Translation: you're not a submissive to authority. Take it as a complement. In Kundalini philosophy it is said that you cannot avoid the fire on the path to self-awareness and enlightenment. You are in the fire right now. There is a reason the great mystics, whether Jesus or Buddha or whomever, fasted when they were in need of guidance and clarity of mind. It is not pain free but when you emerge from the other side of it you will know in your bones what you want and how to get it. If this sounds esoteric, it's not. You can boil it down to chemistry if you like. Persistent fasting will reboot the endocrine system where motivational hormones like dopamine come from in the first place. Good luck to you sweetheart.
interesting video.
OOOH shiny... Was said to me (more like in front of me), one day when this young girl I was working with comes to me with this, " Mr Z. I saw something today that made me think of you... ohhh shiny!!", as she reaches down to pick up up a glittered feather barrette thingy off the ground and then totally forgets the message she started about her thinking about me and continues admiring her new found treasure... totally forgetting about me. I wonder how many peeps do this at any given time. I now wonder, if I do it?
Btw, Nixie, You are shiny!! =)
My first few hours of my life with you in it. Intelligence and interesting I am AND are you an Aspie as well?
i am so going through these issues currently. at the moment wearing pants, but nor usually... ;)
NOT having to put on pants is a moral struggle? LOL. Shiiiieeeet. That is a BLESSING. Less often to wash pants. If I worked from home exclusively and never had to be on camera, I'd stay naked all day every day except when leaving the home to grocery shop and take care of other business. This saves big time on the laundry bill.
I see 2 computer monitors, a TV, and a cat bed. That's whats important. :)
Enjoyed your intro's, you gonna bring them back?
We enjoy your full o life Videos.....get well and enjoy life ..Cheers
There is a book called The Artists Way. Its really cool. It has these tasks that kinda work, though it is a bit dated. Have a look cos its basically how to tackle creative block.
YOU ARE THE BEST NIXIE !!! :)
Goede Video :)
I feel the same. I just don't feel motivated doing what I'm doing. Do i suck it up and be complacent or do i search for something better? It's hard.
"mad-scientist, out-there, brainy, ADD types" - I think the word you're looking for is "wizards", we are WIZARDS.
Great, I'd love to reply on app IRC, but don't know what that is.... always something I have to learn. :)
I love you so much
I would love to have a job where I can spend more time or all of my working time at home. What made you pick California?
I think the key to the 'just getup every day' idea, is routine. It's not easy to describe how it works for people who it has always worked for. Try creating a morning routine, no matter what it is, and stick to it.
Coffee - definitely coffee.
We have a office here at home & at the workshop. I feel depress because my mom & step dad for whom I working for don't listing to me.
I like this vid...
Ever consider have a psychological evaluation? Could one of the 7 motivational disorder that exist.
I like your cat.
+Nixie Pixel.. one of my favorite youtubers!
I like your computer setup. But you should get a hex stand and have six. Saw it in a movie called 'Cybergeddon'. What Linux distro do you use often, besides Ubuntu? ;)
Whoa, are u from Iowa? I was raised in Iowa but I now live in Wisconsin.
I have for you. El el Liam then they shall forget the El and the el and remember my name Liam forever :0)
I am a programmer. Looking for a job right now. It's tough getting hired.
Check! I work from home ... pants optional.
If I was getting the amount of money you are from patreon I would be at least uploading 1 high quality video every day and daily articles on a blog and be very active with my follows on social media.
Yay *commended* :)
talk nerdy to me?.......dont stop!!!!!
You need to watch Rocky films!
Added it to my watch list
Do my eyes deceive me, or is that the caffeine necklace? ;-)
Sorry for the late response, but "working on my health"...
Are you okay? At this point you're probably well already but if not get well soon-ish and anything you need, do let us know.
DAMN MISLEADING TITLES
I have that fox!!
Red panda = firefox = GLORIOUS
hi Karly Noel.
Have you ever had a diagnosis of fybro mialga don't know if I spelt that right, I have watched a few of you vids now and understand your predicament my partner has the same problem you have and can't get motivated she will be talking one minute about something then the brain fog comes out and she totally goes off subject to something else. She was diagnosed with fybro two years ago it is a big thing and is classed as a disability as you have days you can't function properly then other days your ok. Just a thought that's all.
Sounds like ADD. Ritalin has been abig help for me
