  • ((Needed some breathing room, taking some time off and returning on June 10th with a refreshed mind)) Quick update video, because we really should be fighting for the users. :-) If you're a sysadmin or work with an ISP, they want your network - and have likely gone through you (without your consent) to get to it. It's still happening, but the Patriot Act that makes it all possible is up for review on June 1st. WHAT TO DO:
Read up on the issue: www.eff.org/deeplinks/2015/01...

Has anyone watched the John Oliver show on privacy and the NSA? It was excellent. It highlights how little mainstream media cares. There's a great clip of a senator talking about ending a particular program as it's probably not helpful and they interrupt her to cut to Justin Beiber getting arrested.

The internet scares our governments. Its to hard to control, to easy to share and to easy for people to learn. All these laws that are aimed at taking away our internet anonymity are the last moves of a out dated generation and a sign of fear.

The thing is, I am warning people about these kinds of things and that would and could possibly be the downfall of us humans. But every time I vent my thoughts about the whole thing, people say "calm down, if you do not have anything to hide, why bother?" and that is like saying "sure, put a chip in my new-born baby so you can follow her/him everyday for all of her/his life, it's ok, she doesn't have anything to hide". But here is the problem, if all the non-tech people say "why bother", than we give the govs more "trust" into what they are doing. And that is way too much power to give to ONE entity of people that only sees us as things in logs of data-mining e.t.c.

I got the very same responses. People are missing the point that they are slowly giving up freedom and rights that their children and grandchildren will pay for. Possibly unknowingly. The frustrating part is we live in the age of information, but it feels like the age of misinformation.

EdWittenable Yes, indeed it is so. It is really weird when some of us understand the situation and some of us do not see the severity at all. Feels like there is nothing I can do. It is like talking to a wall when I try to talk about it with people. And I do not need to convince people like me, we already know. We need to inform the information-zombies.

BangTango To that I would ask the people to let me have a look at their call history of their phone, their history on the computer and if they have their diary ... they don't have anything to hide right? And they would trust a friend for more with the personal information then some governmental employee right? What you don't want a camera in your home? Do you have to hide something?

    • @BangTango
      @BangTango Před 9 lety +1

GunmanPunisher Believe me, i have tried that as well. And as soon as I do that, they start to believe that I am out for something, I want to look into their private lifes. And then i counter again, so do you want the gov to do that? and they say, well... no... But they still do not get it. They can't simply see the "all-too-clear" point that I make for them... Scott Downey, When I left Canada 25 years ago the RMCP and CSIS prettymuch had the powers the FBI, HLS, CIA, and NSA have acquired in the US recently. The number one tool of deflection I remember was to constantly talk about US politics with condescension, so that believing something might be as bad or worse than the US would hurt a sense of national pride based on being better than the US.

    • @ScottDowneywoundedbear
      @ScottDowneywoundedbear Před 9 lety

ChromaDrone I'm not saying the RMCP and CSIS are not doing the same things cause it happens all around the world. What pisses me off is that the US states do as we want or you don't get any thing. We buy military planes but can't have the data base to maintain them. They bring in their own companies. But if they buy things from us we have to give the information over, such as the Canada Arm. It's more of a one way street. There all kinds of examples in recent years. The movie industry stating crack down on movie downloads or we will not send you opening movies for theatres. There things we just don't give a shit about but we have to do it or the US has something to say. If we make a fuss, its like so what. Do what we say or we will take it attitude. I know we have the attitude about what goes on there but we don't look in are back yard. When it comes to the internet we are spoiled. In general we have a fast system, not every place and we use the internet more than any one per capita in the world with less restrictions. I just don't think they have the right to tell us how to run this country. I could go on forever but I think I will stop at this point.Scott

Coming from a place where I know for a fact that our phones were actively monitored, and conversations recorded (right now I'm not sure it's still happening), I've learned not to trust anybody or anything with information that they could use against me.
Nobody has the time and resources to personally monitor everything that I do, but for the things that ARE being monitored, I just try to keep them away from interested parties. For example, Google doesn't care what bank serves me, but the tax authorities at my home country does. And Google and my country have nothing in common, which is great for me.
Keep the honey away from the bear, and you will care less that there's a bear, or that you have honey.

I'm glad that you're pursuing this line of study, and it is study when you need to read as much material as you are to keep up to date on what's going on in this much under-publicized area. I'm studying IT at uni and was thinking of doing the units pertaining to security, because quite frankly the average person doesn't have a clue when it comes to staying safe online. They know so little, that our very own governments take advantage of that fact and try to pass crazy laws, seemingly with everyone's blessing!

Nixie Pixel The term "privacy" makes the internet sound like a communication tool. But, as you will know, the internet is my computer(s), your computer(s), our friends'/families' computers, etc. Those devices are what we use to control our own lives. We use them as a digital extension of our biological brains. So when someone is able to intercept the data travelling between those devices - i.e. take control of our devices - democracy becomes much less relevant.

I know a few techs who take the attitude that they've done no wrong and therefore the noise is "all about politics" and they try and ignore it. That was fine a few years ago. We cannot ignore what is happening and, I suggest, as the tech-inclined, have a duty higher than that of the Mom and Pop home user to fight the erosion of our liberties, simply because we can often appreciate the implications more clearly. Money is driving this change, not threat or true patriotism. Good on you for using your space here to take a stance. Respect.

My employer uses Bluecoat's SSL Man-in-the-middle thing.
You know how I found out?
I found out totally accidentally because I happen to use Firefox as my browser and one day it pretty much just broke.
Or more precisely all the sites using https broke and that means all of google, yahoo, and facebook.
And then it was me doing a lot of googling (using an alternate browser).
I had to check multiple sources of info because I was not aware of this SSL infiltration nastiness before.
It's like--It's one thing to know that in principle your employer *could* be monitoring you.
It's another thing entirely to find out one day that they largely have not been, but that they totally are now--and they can get into *EVERYTHING* .
Eventually I found a non-policy-breaking way to rig up Firefox and get around the SSL infiltration. See there's actually two networks my computer can access from work. So I have Firefox route through the guest access network instead.
    Same for Dropbox.

Re: Rights. The United States, almost uniquely among nations (with the exception of France), places all rights in the hands of the people. Government only has powers that are given to it by the people, who can take them back at any time. It is far more than nitpicking to point out that the Bill of Rights does not grant rights; it RECOGNIZES them. Rights, in the United States, are qualities that people are born with, and which the government cannot take away (except in the case when rights come in conflict with each other). A lot of the controversy over the Bill of Rights was based on the fear that ONLY enumerated rights would be recognized; the 10th Amendment was passed for that reason (one member of the Constitutional Convention joked, when pointing out that there was no way that all rights could be enumerated, that it would be a waste of space to say that the government can't decree what you have for dinner. Little did he know...). Alas, both major political parties are working very hard to reverse this. Hope that this little history lesson helps with your phrasing!

I'd like to have an answer on this please, how bad is it if they're monitoring us?
    How does this harm us?
I think it actually protects us and I encourage whoever may be watching to keep doing their job, because I feel bad for them.
They do a honest job to protect us and people just panic and hate on them..
I hear people saying things like "Yeah, they should only watch people outside the US or North America", but I'm certain there's many *MANY* people that could cause harm and that live in the US or North America and that it could be prevented.
I think the NSA is saving lives and they are being blamed for it like it was a bad thing.

    Dear Nixie,
im a software dev and yes i agree that the internet has turned from a place of freedom to "strictly observed" place where freedom is sort of secondary.
IMO however the internet is still sort of "free". Ppl talk about privacy online where i have to think about crime or online crime which by old standards would mean a criminal person could do wte he wants to. see silkroad etc for example.
I agree that being under surveillance is bad or makes u think ur not free anymore but personally i see these ppl as "online cops" to protect us free ppl while still being free.
I have nothing to hide and frankly if ppl feel the need to observe me close up then go ahead. It does not rlly affect me or restrict me from my online usage. Freedom has its price ._. and just as a reference because ppl might have that at the back of their heads already. What the NSA can do is most likely a lot more than we already know. Observing and controlling it is important.
We all want our privacy and we shouldnt think of NSA ppl spying on us that it is limited or restricted. They do it for our protection after all.
PS: im not a US citizen but still feel the affection of this internet surveillance even here. Internet privacy affects everyone internationally.

Your probably too young to remember this but there was a real funny movie about the NSA in the 1980's called Hanky Panky. Pretty much says it all.
Like business establish slogans "NSA weaking software standards since 1975", LOL.

Honestly, Richard Stallman has been talking about this for years now. Until the leaks people just saw him as crazy. Now, not so much... okay he may still be a little eccentric. I'd look to fsf.org and gnu.org for some inspiration about freedom and privacy.

Yes it is a long term debate. We all share huge amounts of data with each other publicly yet we wish to keep some measure of privacy and security from those who would abuse or mis-use such data against us or those around us. This is the near constant quandry of such an open social network or open source technolgy for that matter. The real answer is that there is no real solution. Freedom, true freedom comes at the cost of eternal vigilance. We as an open community must be vigilant at all times.
