New Video! My thoughts on Canonical and corruption, the best Linux distros, vi vs. Emacs & more...
(pass it on ^.^ )
I second VIM!
I feel so sad about ubuntu, I'm really an ubuntu guy (yes judge me), but I really liked the idea, ubuntu worked perfectly and there was a lot of time and resources investment around, I will see where it goes because today's is a different world, not everithing has to go the same way as in the past.
Mentioning vi instead of vim... But yes, vim is the editor to choose.
Work in a REHL server, that you couldn't pay for an update, and comment again my friend, there is a dark side :P
Oscar Arbelaez you don't pay us for the software - that's all open source. You pay for support and service. It's a fair deal. If you cannot afford our services, you can always keep on using the software.
Great information as always, and the customer service call at the end is classic and so true.
The last part made me laugh. Keep up the vids I love watching them.
Wow, smart, informed, confident, and gorgeous. Where did you come from? I love your videos!
Good taste for music ;) 5 minutes alone is one of the best :)
The day Canonical charges for Ubuntu or doesn't allow you to switch off ads in the lenses, they can be called 'corrupt'. They have to compete for designers/developers/engineers with Appple and MS, and those people have families to support, so obviously they need to make money somehow, beyond donations. But, like i said, until the day they strong-arm us, they can't be called corrupt.
Ok, I normally skip the rev3 ads, but that was really funny.
Very nice episode. Honestly I have been waiting for you to make a remark such as the last one about ubuntu. it was my one and only linux stop until i found mint a while ago. Thanks to it I use windows only what 20% of the time. ;)
Love the ending with the Spanish operator :)
1:39 PanterA FTW!
I didn't know you liked PanterA.
canonical should continue to develop Ubuntu as a community based OS, and then turn a profit by selling hardware like ubuntu preloaded desktops laptops and cell phones. then I wouldn't mind them trying to turn a profit as much as I do know
It's great. Probably my favorite distro. I've used it for school for 2 years now.
Nixie is just awesome! Thumbs up for the Quagmire reference.
Love the video! Especially the part with RMS and his free software song!
You mentioned earlier you wanted to work on a project that helps lower-income kids in America get computers. I'm actually doing something similar (in Canada). Do you know of any sustainable organizations that do this in the US?
4:58
OMG Nixie... you have seen the Light... Never thought I'd ever hear you admit what you just said...
Your faces at end of video are priceless ......
"I'd not marry anyone before everyone in my nation can."
Infinife respect from me and my bf. You're awesome Nixie :D
You should do more of QnA. Liked and Subscribed. :)
I wanted to address the Canonical issue, as I agree they are definitely heading towards the profit and earnings side of the line. However with that, they are also producing one of the best business cases of all the Debian distros, and that takes money. To capture business away from other distros, and especially from MS, it is important to be on that side.
As a tech that does a lot for people who do not use Linux, but are considering changing to Linux, Ubuntu provides a very stable alternative to Windows, especially with wine. Most of my clients have at least migrated their server networks to Ubuntu, and have done very well with that. They are still not changing the desktop, but that may happen in the next LTS release.
I agree that this may not be the most open and popular Linux direction, but it will probably push Linux, at least Ubuntu into the business space, and that would be good for all, including other distros.
CZcams suggested your video when searching for "best linux distro for web development" and I'm crying tears of joy that a girl does Linux and IT and shares knowledge in a natural, relaxed way. Go IT girls go! :o)
:D spanish audio in final of video!+
Nice channel.
Hey! I forgot how much I like Nixie! Umm Canonical joining the darkside ... well that was obvious. it's nice to see you again
Love the moon-tan dear, just like mine... & I live in Australia!
Ubuntu + XMonad(& xmobar) ... friend of mine tricked me into trying it and i love it! Not missing anything from normal window managers, terminal love FTW.
Would be interesting to see a video from our favorite Geek Goddess about XMonad ...
Mint, I was going to say before getting cut off by the character limit, comes the closest to that ideal. I install it, and I go. No extra mucking around trying to get things to work properly.
Stallman's crazyness level: Sheldon
You're right, it is mentioned there. I was just expecting more of a comparison between them.
Nice video............thanx for uploading Nixie :)
I've got a similar problem. I found that Mint works fine, as long as you go with the Xfce desktop. This is more of an issue in terms of latency than the distro it's self. Meaning that the same distro packaged in two different desktops can run very different from each other. If you still have problems, there is a Ubuntu spin called "Lubuntu" it uses the LXDE desktop, arguably one of the lightest desktops around. It is backed by Cannonical, so you can expect to have the same level of support.
Yes, you're right. It would've nice to hear her opinion about it though.
Could you make a review of the Slackware based Salix OS? It would also be interesting to know more about what the future of the BIOS looks like, according to barebone pc:s and the possibility to install another linux distro on for example a Chromebook.
Thubms up for PANTERA! \m/
That song was so funny lol
glad you said mint linux
as far as I remember, PS3 (underlying) is based on freebsd, and support for running linux was removed. Also, I declare myself to be of the editor acme (the one from that os called plan 9 (?))
Spot on!
Thanks!
You, Girl, Rock!
Hey I love your show. Quick question is there a way to clone my system (OS with Apps installed) to a USB like carbon copy or better save it to a bootable USB as in transfer the OS with current installed apps to my USB and boot from it? PM me please! :] I'm running Linux lite 1.04 in case it matters. Thanks again.
Hi, try playing with the white balance on your camera when you shoot outside :-) you won't look like you just escaped from a basement where you were forced to use lotion :-) great stuff thanks !
thanks for answering those Q's Nixie.
1 more , do u go to the school ?
So happy to hear you aknowledge Apple as the dark side, as far as Ubuntu goes i have no problem with it so far, as long as you can disable this crap. When you can't without major hacking then it becomes a problem.
At last! Someone accepts
Nailed it.
Here in northern Illinois, we have one inch of snow... it's April... AND WE HAVE AN INCH OF FUCKING SNOW
"Unil everyone in my country can [marry]".
I LOVE YOU NIXIE. Seriously. You just made my whole entire Day.
In regard ubuntu I guess that its contribution was tremendously bigger that its faults. Ubuntu gave us more confidence in Linux future breaking the ice, making the big companies look differently for linux, not forgetting of course the significant contribution of IBM. I love your videos :)
I think that firefox will be used for old devices, like puppy linux for slow machines. A nice lightweight mobile os
Well said.
Yay, Mint! The choice for me, either that or Elementary OS once it comes out with a non-beta release. Although I've been booted into windows for about a month now since i've been playing games non-stop that don't work well in Mint or Elementary. >.<
Have you tried Wine, playonlinux, vineyard, or Gametree? Do your games run on React OS?
I am considering trying it again in a vm to get the hang of it a bit better.
What would you say are the biggest reasons to go from Ubuntu to Gentoo?
have you tried archlinux yet!!! i think it's one of the best.. aLinux is a good one to, comes with almost everything but hasn't been updated in a few years.. i suggest diving into archlinux though. i think it'd mesh well with ur love of the command line..
i luv you too nixie!!!! do more of these vids, i love the community feel it creates.. perfect for our linux community... keep it up!! ur awesome???
can you tell me when the ubuntu edgy or the new ubuntu phone will be coming out and how to buy one?
Thanks for any feedback
can you please tell me what song plays at the beggining, and at 5:45?
thank you! keep awesome :P
The best combination...
Watching this on muh Mint.
Holla back.
Omg yes linux mint is so awesome!
Sean Kim try deepin
You can run linux on these consoles:Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, NDS, DSi, N64, Gamecube, Wii, Wii U, PSP, PSP Go, PSP Vita, PS2, PSX, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360, Dreamcast, Sega Saturn, Vsmile, Nuon, Pannasonic Q, Treamcast, and many dev kits for diffrent systoms.
After reading this whole conversation, I'm thinking about using mint, too. (And recommending it to my apprentices...)
That's an option that I have considered from time to time. However, I don't use the Unity interface (I use a tiling window manager called "Awesome"), so many of the complaints are about things that I'm not exposed to, and I therefore haven't had much reason to move.
Are u gonna review Ubuntu 13.04? if so when should we expect it?
It's also mentioned several times at: ubuntu.com/phone/ubuntu-for-android but that is also one of the few places they mention the kernel. For the most part the website seems more designed for aesthetics and marketing to the non-linux geek.
"our kids would be just smart and beautiful" was taken from The Big Bang Theory s01 e01 =P
But when I say that y'know I'm breaking a stereotype that was made over these years on the television of geeks being skinny, white and etc... It's good to see her dedication and passion!
Hi Nixie,
I would reccomend that you download and use Trisquel GNU/Linux.
It is based upon Ubuntu, but with the non-free and other ethically problematic parts taken out and some interesting developments and improvements made.
If you have concerns over non-free software then using "Linux Mint" instead of Ubuntu is like jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire.
I don't know about which 11.10 alpha/beta feature to which you are referring (you'll have to be specific).
However, if you're referring to the shopping lens (in 12.10), you might have a point: omgubuntu has an interesting article on this subject with the URL tagline "does-ubuntus-amazon-lens-break-eu-law".
Interesting, if Ubuntu developers turn to the dark-side, they would really have to step up big-time. Thanks for the info @Nixie Pixel. Question I am a non geek trying with the little time I have to be a full geek and create programs and apps, where should I start?
Dear Nixie. You're awesome, but, when will you talk about openSUSE, SUSE Studio and KDE?
Will Ubuntu 13.04 work on a small Lenovo Netbook with an Intel Atom processor? It's got Windows 7 starter, but it gets slow sometimes -.- What do you recommend?
So much agree Nixie, I've been using Ubuntu since 5.10 Breezy Badger. And I've noticed a great deal about all this ubuntu closing up.....yeah I meant closing up, I see Ubuntu closing more and more, and yes I also see Mark as the new Jobs. And the more I notice the more ubuntu and canonical stinks
Nixie, I love you.
She listens to Pantera!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it's too cold to be outside for long... we just got like 6" of snow..... we don't have spring in MN
I would recommend Pinguy OS for beginners. It is based on Ubuntu with a lot of the common software already installed, some UI tweaks and ready to go.
If you want a stable unstable debian... try siduction... my favourite :-)
hi...i got question here to you..what Linux Ubunt u sugest to instal for me ? i like to dig in computer files i like to have acces to every file on my drives i like i love sound and video editing so its mean alot VST Dx Plugins in use.allot midi programs well.. last time i instaled Ubunt 13 somethink.i think lastes.i was stuck with simple EXE ..this stuff was Unable to insta lsome exe programs.including graph drivers what was for linux..hellp.i mtired of windows..what linux u sugest for me ? :/
I have to agree with the Shuttleworth becoming Darth Jobs idea. I've been using Ubuntu since version 5.04. Lately it's become something I feel I have to justify. It's a "Yeah, I use Ubuntu, but I'm still a good person, really" kind of feeling that I *do not* like experiencing.
"Personally I'd not marry until everyone in my nation can"
I love you
I never realized you were so short
On lightweight distros you missed CRUNCHBANG LINUX!
In my opinion one of the most overlooked lightweights, is Puppy still running user as root?
I haven't played with it in awhile.
I have been using Ubuntu since 7.04. But I too have noticed that Canonical has become more and more corrupted, ever since it has integrated Amazon as part of the default Unity interface.
@Nixie What do you think about the new UDOO MoBo?
The thing that rubbed me the wrong way with ubuntu first was the whole rhythmbox/banshee debacle. Then, the last straw was the introduction of the ubuntu store. I went hoping shortly after that.
Yey! Nixie also likes Linux Mint. :)
Richard Stallman should voice a male glados. Valve should also make a portal 3
What distro do you recommend for an old computer, let's say about 12 years old, pentium iii 933mhz with 1gb of ram, I had no luck with mint, a kernerl error appears
Crunchbang is the best distro I've used, period. The only one I've deemed worthy of being a daily driver.
I think, that when the ads come up, I must have patience because, after all, I have a couple of G-ads on my website. It is a way of making a little cash without having to sell something.
It is Xbox XBMC (xbox media center) and it is a REPLACEMENT OS for the Xbox (Not sure about xbox 360) to make it strictly a media box based on linux.
I'm starting to become skeptical of Ubuntu since I just heard about this today from a friend...it makes me want to scrub my HDD and install a different distro. How's Mint? Is that under the wing of Ubuntu? Or would Fedora be a good choice?
Have you ever thought about making a video about WineHQ?
Yeah, right.....? :D I LOVE it....
I've started to become skeptical with Canonical as my friend revealed things to me. I've since then switched my laptop to Debian Wheezy and my desktop has never been better with Linux Mint Debian Edition!!! So once LM16 reaches its end, I'm going to switch the family computers to LMDE!
Also, Ubuntu is based on Debian. And Debian uses deb packages which can be as easy to install as Windows exe's. GDebi is included in Ubuntu. Just right click the deb and when GDebi comes up, click "Install".
Although I prefer dpkg -i.
And I totally agree. The transparency is still there, although their business interests need to be there in order to sustain itself. Google did this to a point on a very subtle level, and being as large as they are now they have come up with the Chrome OS and are some of the largest contributors to Linux Coding academies which is invaluable.
And as you say, if the ads are not welcome, try another flavor, but do not forget someone STILL has to pay for dev costs. Devs need to eat too!
video good. thnak share. i hope make more video !
if I have the buy-suggestions in my unity and can't turn them off, I think I switch to fedora because of the gnome shell, for now I use Ubuntu Gnome anyway. Will they ever start censorship in the softwarecenter? This would be a no-go.
When are you going to do another calender?
No vitamins please...I totally love your beautiful marble skin ;)
