Installing an Aermotor Windmill

- Installing a 1930's Aermotor windmill fresh off of a farm in Elwood, Nebraska (I apologize I kept calling it Elswood) where it has been standing since the 30's! Paul form "Paul's Windmill and Crane Service" in Illinois acquired this, went through the head and tower completely refurbishing it to exact standards as new.
After reconditioning, he brought it down with his service truck and trailer and over the next 9 hours we built it and stood her back up and got her pumping again. I wanted all the age, character and patina where it looked like it had been on my farm its whole life instead of Elwood, Nebraska. The bright shiny metal and fresh paint just wasn't the look I was after.
We look forward to decades of enjoyment and hopefully it becomes a navigational landmark in the town when folks are giving directions on how to get someplace! - Zábava
Good to see these old Aeromotors making a comeback.
What an interesting video! Great step by step explanations of how the windmill works and how you installed it. It looks great!
So awesome. Windmill noise made me sleep back in the day at the ranch. Love them to this day.
Great video A splendid piece of heritage farming appliance and reconditioning for relocation
Thank you Dave for this posting! Wonderful, easy to understand explanation of installation and workings of a windmill. I learned something watching it today. Congratulations on a beautifully executed project!
Thank you I appreciate it! You sound like you were a UH-47 guy? I was UH-60’s
Thank you,
I have been fascinated by AeroMotor Windmills for years. This video is far and away the BEST explanation of how the entire system works from the fan to the pump. In all the years of checking these things out this is the only video I’ve come across that explains exactly how it all works and what the different parts are. Like I had no idea that they used Ash Wood as part of the pump shaft!
Thank you I appreciate the kind comments! I have another video of it operating and explaining a bit more. As I go back and look at it, it was when I first started my channel and I could have done a much better job explaining and filming but glad it was of benefit to you. Thx for watching! Dave
Nice video! Thanks for sharing this expereince
Thank you I appreciate it and thx for watching!
Great mill, I put mine up in 2017 and it spins strong everyday
It’s awesome and gets lots of folks honking their horns when driving by. Pumps water like a champ!
Belo trabalho.rapaz
That 4 floor-high small platform requires a safety belt
Greetings from Ireland , love these old windmills they look and sound great , very good video , would love to put one of them on my farm here , have you any idea of the gear ratio in the gear box .
Thank you Martin and sorry for the delay. I was trying to find the gear ratio for you but was unable to in any of my literature or manuals. I'm sure one can be shipped over to you there, probably not too cheap but your neighbors would be envious! Thx for watching, Dave
Will high winds damage the mechanism if the tail is not "braked?"
No it self brakes itself. The tail has a spring on it and anything over 20mph, it will start braking (the tail will swing in and out slowing itself) and then anything over 30mph, it will fully lock out automatically. Once wind subsidies, spring will pull tail back out and resume normal operations. Very ingenious! Thx for watching, Dave
how did you install the pump pole supports?
They are just slotted with a male and female to the tower and then clamp to pump rod, the wooden shaft. Hope that helps and thx for watching!

* Thanks so much,. really appreciate it - yu 've make CLOSE-UP view of the footage of " top pole".
Tq for sharing,. & answered all questions. ✅
Thank you Hassan! I appreciate it and thx for watching
What kind of wood is the platform made of?
It’s ash which is traditional and historically correct. Many people use pressure treated today but the guy who installed it only does them historically correct. It will probably have to be replaced in 5 years or so
@@bdradley1 I'd love to watch the traditionalist sit thru a historically correct tooth drilling.
@@chetmyers7041 lol they were much tougher folks back then!
What happens when your water tank gets full?
You either have to turn the mill off or let it run over making a muddy mess. I’m going to install a drain in the top of mine and trench an irrigation line down the driveway and the overflow will water the pecan trees. That’s an upcoming video. Thx for watching!
So what was the total ticket on that?
Windmill gone through and freshened up was 5700 and then I paid him to bring it down and install from Illinois after he went out west to dismantle. He brought all components to make it completely operational and total was less than 10k. Paul's Windmills, google him. He's one of aboout 3 guys in nation that do it exclusively and correct;y.
He brought to Georgia I forgot to add.
By todays inflation that's a bargain. @@bdradley1
How much did this cost you?
@@raycecil4643 I think all in was a bit over $10k? Windmill was 5750, crane was 600, transport was ?, pump with sucker rods and all parts and pieces to make operational was 1350, I paid him 30 hr and I think we had 12-14 hrs? Best to my memory. Hope that helps and thx for watching! Dave
@@bdradley1 Thanks for your response. I will have to find a cheaper alternative. I found a Monitor vaneless nearby me for sale. Entire windmill for $4000. I might be able to stand it up, and do the pump all myself too.
Elwood, Nebraska. Not “Elswood”.
Thank you Chris I appreciate it. If you read video description I corrected myself before I published.
@@bdradley1 No problem, just wanted to make sure. I am putting together an Eli at the moment. This was a very useful video, thanks for posting!
@@cdhassler thank you I appreciate it! Good luck with yours. Mine has become kind of the local navigation landmark and if I turn it off I start getting text asking why? Folks love to see it turning
