I recently tore my s205 apart and was blown away by how nice the cylinder was, all the ports were clean and smooth, no flashing or burs to be found like I expected from a china saw. The squish is massive though at .058 so a gasket delete is definitely worth it

I picked a 42cc craftsman same as the Paula’s same as Husqvarna 136 for $20 Canadian. I put a .325 spur sprocket in it and an old 15”Husky bar and chain, opened up the muffler a bit. Now it stays in the back of my truck as a just in case saw. I’ve got quit a few “pro” saws and your right, the little poulans are no match, but they can be made to run pretty decent for a backup saw or homeowner saw.

I have a P3314 Woodshark that came with a 42cc engine in it. I bought it as a refurb. I also own a PP4218 that I got on clearance from Lowe's a few years ago that also has a 42cc engine it it. I've had no problems with either one of them. I also own a Craftsman 358350980(Poulan Pro 5020 cousin), a Jonsered 2240 and an Echo 590. Anyway, I'm in no hurry to throw away my "junk" Poulans for Chinese made MTD Craftsmans. My Poulans may have Chinese parts in them, but then again so do Husqvarnas and Stihls as well. What I think would be a good video would be a comparison of cheap Poulan, Ryobi, and these Craftsman/MTD saws completely stock. Most people are not buying box store chainsaws and then immediately doing a muffler mod and or porting their saws, they just aren't.

That Craftsman is the same as the Remington 4620. I switched out the top end for 52cc top end off of Aliexpress, muffler mod, reduced squish to .022, and ported the not out of it. I don't think the 34mm will fit in that crankcase...

I have a newer (2018) China craftsman 42cc that I ported. It's heavy but suitable after porting.
Had the tiniest exhaust and intake ports I've ever seen and horrific squish. That must be how they pass emissions.

That craftsman is an MTD product that's made in China. Same saw as the current Troy Bilt and Remington saws. Aluminum cases. Not sure about the 46cc but the 42cc version has removable transfer covers along with a removable cylinder with aluminum crankcase inside a plastic housing.

Got the 42cc s145 version last year for $99 new in box on clearance! Wasn't in lowes for a saw but couldn't say no to that price😅 immediately built it a pipe, checked squish and removed the base gasket. It's been great! For pruning and limbing, it's my go-to saw! Definitely a zenoah/redmax clone. Can sit for weeks and 9 out of 10 times will start first pull if you're quick on the choke!

Lol. Mine was on clearance as well. I only got it to experiment on. Cheap learning tool for sure. I ported it, muff modded and put a velocity stack with clamp on air filter on it. The piston was lightened, case matched to the lowers ect. Its a ripper for a Chicom throw away. Not sure how long it will hold up but its been a fun unit. Its ran close to 2 gallons of fuel so far.

Zenoah / echo clones is why the cheap little China specials all kinda kick butt… they are just a cheap version of some real decent Japanese design. 80’s Japanese design kicked butt buddy… cars motorcycles electronic and stereo equipment.,, chainsaw’s.,,, and the list goes on… very useful stuff without a lot of silly bling or unnecessary features…. When I got my first $100 dollar 60cc 20” bar saw from eBay when it arrived I went through it… I don’t like that.058 chain so I ordered it a 20” Raismen bar and chain combo… 3/8 .50 72… like everything else… I sharpen the chain and ground my rakes off at.050 thou and went to pounding upon it!!! Three years as the grab it whenever you can and pound on it saw… 40:1… the freaking thing still runs fantastic!!! Because it’s from China it’s an open can already with two little tubes out… I didn’t do anything but tune it up a little… and cut cut cut! I’m talking about cutting up a couple take downs a week into 16 inch chunks and then everything and anything else that I could find to cut with it! It’s cut 70 cord? Or more maybe??! literally just a little $100 dollar 036…. I’d grab that saw way before the stock ms391… and it’s better than the ported 391 too because it’s a little smaller and lighter for about equal power…. Guy bought a container of them pretty cheap because he had about 30 left and he dropped from his $40 dollar price point to my $30 dollar cash price point quickly… I made a couple bucks off them… a little landscaping company or a tree service with relatively inexperienced guys working for them… that’s what I put in their hands… or a 5800… johncutter…. It’s theirs and they are responsible for it’s care and maintenance…. You can watch and evaluate how they will take care of equipment… and it’s an extremely cheap investment with a huge return! And they make their mistakes on a $100 dollar saw not a $700 dollar saw…. You can hang up the ms261’s $700? And the 362cm too really… rest your “pro” saw’s and put the hours on your “”junk” saw’s! LMFFAO!!! It absolutely amazes me how quickly people are to regurgitate the rhetoric.., and repeat things that they have heard on the internet and all the while they don’t have a clue about smack! Anyone who grabs one of these little metal 60cc 20” saw’s and actually cuts with it… then really works it…. Would never in a million years consider it “junk” they are an awesome deal on a really decent saw’s!!! A super deal considering that their equivalent in Stihl is the ms391… $600? Bucks for less saw??!! I’ll take 6 of my junk saw’s all day long before I’d ever buy a new 391… or anything else that wasn’t a pro saw! And there’s some real argument to the idea that I’ll save a big chunk of my money and I’ll run the $100 dollar saw and I’ll take that extra 261 $500? And I’ll toss that into some penny stock or the Edward Jones account and let it grow a little interest??! I’ve run my own business my entire life and I learned very early that it’s not what you make it’s what you spend!!! The lower your overhead the better!’n. I’ll run these little off brand saw’s no problem… the guy who is paying me to remove his tree wants the lowest price possible… I can actually change less if I’m not running around $3000 grand worth of saw’s to get his job done… I used a $100 dollar saw and it’s it’s 100 th job… my saw cost is $5 bucks towards filters or fuel lines and the fuel and oil… I’ve got $20 bucks spent… chipper hours or whatever… any company who doesn’t have a couple of these cheap saw’s in their fleet are really missing an opportunity!!! In my opinion! It’s a huge cost savings opportunity, period!

My sentiment as well. Just cutting for firewood for maybe 40 years, we have had a mess of different brands, but never the really expensive ones.
I always liked the feel of my old Homelites the most, used a SuperXL for a long time. It was finally about totally used up when I got searching. Found this S205 at Ace Hardware for about 129 with full kit and carry case. 4 years and maybe 30 cords later it still rocks! Replaced H78 chains with similar Oregon chains and still screaming. Love the way it handles also, so much like the feel of old Homelites. Awesome. Thinking of buying another one or two.

Yes, it's clone, but not all Chinese clones are bad. In fact, this is a very good design of the Japanese company Komatsu Zenoah, today known as Husqvarna Zenoah. The original model is Komatsu Zenoah G4500 or G5200. The optimal maximal rpm recommended by the manufacturer are 12500-13000 with a fuel ratio of 50:1. Today, as part of Husqvarna, Zenoah produces versions of the same chainsaw with modified X-Torq engines, there the maximal rpm recommended by the manufacturer reach to ~14000.

Good question. I like 3/8 chain, what I don't like is 3/8LP. The Low Profile chain is the stuff I don't like, and it almost always come on crappy saws. It was designed for saws with minimal power, like top handles, but if that crap is on a regular saw, it is a direct indication of a terribly low powerd saw. At least, that's how I see it.
      3/8= medium to big saws

Its a fools game trying to determine the "manufacturer" of a saw. Most consumer saws are simply assembled from parts from all over the world. You could theoretically do the same thing in your garage and put your own badge on it and sell them online. If you want a good saw get something from the mid 90's or before and restore it. Also a 20" bar on a 46cc saw is nuts. The marketing people always push bars that are far too long for the saw. A 46cc saw should have a 16" bar max. Heck, I only run a 20" bar on my 88cc Homelite.

I feel bad for the poulan name these days. They used to be top dog or damn close to it, and now they have been transformed into garbage. Really sad that's our society these days unfortunately.

I swear since Husqvarna started making the Poulan saws they have been pretty much trash.

All of them are trash. 20 years ago I would have bought either of those brands but today absolutely not. They are cheaply made, look cheaply made and feel cheaply made.
I only run echo stihl or husqvarna

The mark of a good saw is how it performs a year after it’s bought, NOT out of the box. These saws are garbage. Don’t listen to this video and don’t waste your money on one.
